South Carolina is the favorite to win the women's tournament. They are playing Howard in the first round this afternoon.

At the end of the first quarter South Carolina led 22-2. And they outscored Howard again in the second quarter 22-2. 44-4 at half time. Good lord.

They must have called off the dogs at half time, because it's now late in the third quarter and South Carolina has "only" outscored them 13-4 so far in the third. 57-8 with about a minute to go in the third quarter.

That's pathetic.

South Carolina wins 79-21.

And it looks like from the box score that South Carolina did all that they could to try to not run it up too badly. They played 15 players. 14 of them played at least 8 minutes. Only one starter played more than 19 minutes, and that was 21. 12 players played at least 10 minutes. 13 different South Carolina players scored.

And really, it could have been a lot worse. South Carolina only shot 35.4% from the field and 21.1% from three. Imagine if they had actually shot the ball well. South Carolina out rebounded Howard 69-28. Howard shot 14.8% from the field and 11.1% from three. They did, however, make 100% of their foul shots.

Look forward to when the Women’s Tournament has more and more student athletes like the swimmer from Penn.

Ouch.

I'll give the women's game credit, it's got significantly more competitive than it was back in the 90s, when it seemed like it was UConn & Tennessee every year.

In another 1 vs 16 matchup tonight, at the end of the first quarter Stanford was beating Montana State 20-0. A first quarter shutout. They at least scored a little in the second quarter, as it was 41-12 at the half. And then 63-21 at the end of the third.

I guess 16 seed Albany should be applauded because they were only down 19-7 to Louisville at the end of the first and 48-20 at the half.

The fact that the first ever 1-16 upset was in the women's tournament really always blows my mind, as it always seems the top teams outclass everyone and especially a lower conference team.

Another shutout quarter today. Two seed UConn was leading Mercer 43-23 at the half and then outscored them 20-0 in the third quarter.

I mean it when I say if they played the women's tournament in my backyard and paid me $100 to attend, I wouldn't. And seeing these scores reinforces some reasons as to why. Women's basketball is almost like the USWNT beating a bunch of amateur rec players and demanding to be paid as much as their male counterparts who are playing actual pros.
