Up by 12 with 8 minutes to go and lose? And that 4th down call?

This isn’t his first blown game either, the guy can’t beat good teams. He also struggles with the lead. Eye opening night in Creepy Valley - Franklin is like the Andy Reid of college football.

Interesting stat- the last five PSU losses have been by a combined eight points and they had a 4th lead in all of them.

I guess he’s a “choker’ but what is Pitt?
Embarrassing losses to Ok St, Ped St, UCF.

I wish Duzz was a “choker” too.
I didn’t say he was or wasn’t a choker, just stating what I saw on Twitter. Those five most recent losses probably date back to 2016, not bad. They’re obviously a good team with a good coach.

One could argue Narduzzi is/was a choker as well with some of the games in his first two years. At this point, he’s much lower than that.

I think he’s proven he’s a damned good coach.

But that zone read run call on 4th and 5 with the game on the line and against a beast of a defensive front might be the worst situational play call in modern football history.

How you don’t put the game squarely in the hands of McSorley on that play to win or lose it with his arm or his own legs is beyond comprehension.

It will be really interesting to see what that offense is like after McSorley is gone. He’s the engine that drives the whole offensive bus for them.

I don't know, I thinks its more OSU is like state's New England. They just can't get passed them. Alot are focusing on the bone head welping 4th down, but the 96 yd drive at home late in 4th said more. And OSU without their best player and Mcsorley looking like Vince Young, still kept them in the 20's.

I’d say not yet. Off the top of my head OSU’s offense played flawlessly in the 4th quarter last year. They also went up against Sam Darnold and a pretty stacked USC team in the Rose Bowl.

It may turn out to be the case but he’s not quite there yet.

Disclaimer: if you want to argue rationality as a rooting interest in Penn-State I’ll go ahead and call myself “nitter” now to save some of you the time and effort.

What most likely happened is Franklin’s hair got in his way on that last playcall.

He was too busy standing on a bench with his back to the field waving his arms at the crowd. He's a great recruiter. He has a really good team. Still not sold on his in game coaching.

All in all I can't stand looking at him.

Great bringing up New England because I was talking to a buddy who is a big PSU fan and I mentioned to me Franklin is mike tomlin and Meyer is Belicheat. Franklin like tomlin are good solid CEO type of coaches. They are a bit dependent on making good hires for OC and DC. But both are players coaches, who make some questionable calls. Still they are better than %90 of the coaches out there. Your only going to have a few urban meyers/bellicheat's they are HOF great coaches. Tomlin and Franklin are the next level down. Really good coaches with a couple of flaws. Problem is when you aspire to be the best its pretty damn hard to get there with Tomlin or Franklin, the flip side is if you try to hire someone else you have a %90 chance of doing worse. A fan of either of those teams just has to realize this and hope to get over the top at some point because you can't really let those type of coaches go.

The 4th down call was stupid, imo.

I also thought they should have kicked the FG on an earlier drive where they turned it over on downs.

Franklin is a damn good coach, and I expect PSU to remain an elite program as long as he is there.

These threads are so pathetic and have been all over this board since Franklin was hired. People like Stache and Teh Teh swore Narduzzi was a far better coach and we would be better off in the long run. It makes our fanbase look like pathetic morons. Franklin made a terrible 4th down call, but he is a better HC in literally EVERY single aspect than Narduzzi. It isn't even close.

Urban made some huge coaching blunders throughout that game and Penn State wasn't able to take advantage of it. The last call on fourth down was the cherry on top. Franklin outcoached Meyer that day, but he came up small in the biggest moment of the game.

Yup. Pretty clear that the loss broke him, between the exchange with the fans and the press conference. Might’ve been one of the oddest pressers I’ve ever seen. Going on a few different rants and some quote along the lines of, “You thought I was a psychopath before? Just wait.” Uh, what?

It seemed like Franklin was blaming the loss on his players getting a B in classes and not taking notes in meetings rather than the dumb fourth-down call he made. Somehow I don't think any of that stuff would've been brought up if Penn State wins that game.

Ya 51 cake walks and six losses to good teams..
Call it whatever you want. The game is about wins and losses. You have to play in big games to lose in big games. Nobody gives a $hit about you if you’re not playing for something.

Meanwhile we can keep going out and getting rolled up by the UINCs of the world.

Pitt fans have no room to be criticizing or critiquing anything that Franklin or PissU does. We have a head coach who can't coach and not only can't he recruit, he hates doing it. I'd give anything to be in a position like PissU had last night on national TV to be playing for what amounts to a prospective spot in the playoffs. We're lucky if we win 1 more game the rest of the year. Franklin is a douchebag extraordinaire, but he gets his teams winning and he can recruit. I wouldn't want him as Pitt's head coach, but I sure don't think Narduzzi is anything close to the answer.

As a Pitt fan it is hard to say anything nice about Franklin. Yes he is a much better head coach and done much better than Narduzzi.

BUT
Before Franklin is labeled an elite head coach, I hope every one realizes how close they came to losing the season opener to App St. If the App St player is tackled before he scored in regulation, then Penn St loses the game.

How would Franklin be portrayed had they lost that game?

But they did win the game, mostly due to McSorley (although he is not as good as Pickett) rallying them just like he did last year against Iowa when I was hoping both App State and Iowa would win. Stupid play call against Urban Liar but wins are what defines a coach.

App State is a quality football team. They had a lot of guys returning from a team that beat MAC champion, Toledo, 34-0, in the Dollar General Bowl Game. They are currently receiving 34 votes in the Coaches Poll, ranking them 32nd. Penn State will likely be their only loss all season.

Well you see, we aren’t even good enough to choke. But by goodness, we can take such joy in watching you nitters get bounced from the playoff.

And it feels so so much better knowing that nitter football is the #1 thing in your lives.

So sure, we are bad. But you are out. :)

I’m still amazed at why big-time programs scehdule App State. Every time they play someone, they give em a scare.

He is great recruiter (for whatever reason) but a laughable gameday coach. There is no way in hell Penn State should have lost that game. I still don't know how they lost it. OSU is very overrated this season, as their spread offense only works with a qb who can run.

But anyway I was hoping Pitt could have lol kept it close so this clown would have blown it in the final seconds. Remember PSU should have lost their opening game as well, only bad coverage on a kickoff allowed them to escape.

Yes their happiness in life relies upon the outcome of Football Games played by 17-23 years olds.
They Are: A CULT
6 Million per Year is a Great Gig for a Top Recruiting Coordinator though(even a Self Admitted Crazy Psychopathic One).

I only saw the end of the game. If Narduzzi called that horrible 4th down play could you imagine this board?

He cant beat good teams, and OSU was without their best player, and one of the best players in the NCAA in Bosa

Sappy,

In his third season, Franklin finshed in the top ten, won 11 games and won the conference title. In Narduzzi's third season we finished 5-7.

In his 4th season he won 11 games, won the Fiesta Bowl and finished in the top ten. In Narduzzi's 4th season his record so far is 2-3 while his defense has given up 51, 45, and 38 points...
Would you trade Narduzzi for Franklin?........I thought you would.

Don't let your hatred of PSU blind you from the truth. Even with his flaws, I'd take Franklin in a heartbeat...

Our coach is a laughable gameday coach. Franklin is about average. However, he is a fantastic recruiter and obviously a very, very good motivator. His program wins and that is what he is paid to do.

Hold up. If I made this exact same post a month ago and asked you that, save the KNOWN first 5 weeks, instead of the expected (which wouldn't have really been any different in terms of W/Ls) results, you would have called me a Nitter. You would have said I never answered your "questions" and accused me of trolling with multiple screen names.

How are you now telling other people "Don't let your hatred of PSU blind you from the truth"?
