WRs, 2018

I'll say that WR was Pitt's most disappointing position in 2017. To review:

Tipton got hurt and missed the year.
Weah didn't have the big year that we'd hoped for, after seeing him emerge in 2016.
Henderson did little as a receiver this year. Being hurt didn't help, but that is only part of the story.
Fffffrench did little more than Henderson, and his two drops in the Miami game aren't encouraging going forward.
Mathews is a great blocker at the WR position, but I expected to see him more in the passing game this year, and it never happened.
RaRa was the only guy who really looked like a WR at times, with his ability to find holes in the zone, and secure the football.

But as someone pointed out on another thread, Weah looked a lot better in the Miami game with Pickett throwing to him. We saw the slant route used for the first time all season. Our passing game this year was mostly deep sideline routes to Weah and swing passes behind the line. The point is, part of the lack of WR production was poor QB play. But WRs are responsible too, because there were a lot of drops, and we saw an inability to get open.

Now, 2018:
We get Tipton back. He's not spectacular, but he's a good possession receiver, ala RaRa, who is now gone.

Dontavius Butler was going to play this year, until he got hurt. This guy is very strong, an excellent blocker, and has great hands. I think he'll play a lot next year, and could be very effective.

Perhaps the TEs will be more involved in the passing game. Reeves will hit the field, and we'll find out if he lives up to his huge potential or not. Clark didn't have a good year at all, but he is skilled, and if he has the heart (I have my doubts), he could be much more productive in year 2. The coaches seem to like Sear, and we could see him used as a hybrid TE/wideout.

And then there is Smith, who came to Pitt as a raw WR, with big-time potential, and a deep threat. It will be huge if he develops and can actually produce.

Pickett needs help, but then again, Pickett will help the WRs. Some of the returners may look better next year because of Pickett.

No doubt. Since Weah and Boyd came into the program, Pitt has had very little success with WRs.

>2014 was paper thin with only Adonis Jennings, who promptly transferred.

>2015 had Tipton, since departed project Gentry Ivory and Q. Henderson. Q isn't ideal size, but I think that Watson could've found more ways to use him. Could move him out of the backfield on screens and motion to detached formations to create favorable matchups against LBs or safeties, a la Dion Lewis in NE.

>2016 was better on paper, but while Ffrech and Matthews have played neither has been impactful. Hill had health issues and Flowers hasn't lived up to the hype. Flowers had some drops in the BG game, but is a big body, will only be a RS soph and could still improve his game.

Is Tipton gone? I thought he had a non football injury and will be back.
I liked him he has or had potential!

I am guessing:
WR 1 - Lopes
WR 2 - Tipton
Slot specialist - Henderson
Ffrench back up, mostly as WR 3 slot guy. I like Henderson better there, especially to see if he can find some chemistry with Pickett beyond a jet sweep guy.
Not sure Matthews or Flowers makes it in that top 4 mix or not. Both could be a physical change of pace.

Not sure which side of the ball Ford ends up on. Secondary is essential to this defense, especially in this day and age, but WR position needs explosiveness too. We'll see what Whitehead does...

Need to replace Weah as a home run threat.

Ffrench, Matthews, Flowers are SO, SO and FR FR. Not giving up on any of those guys yet. So guys take a little longer to develop. Butler or Smith will likely step up next season. Tipton is a solid WR and will help immensely. I'm not nearly as down on this position as others. Very young.

Again...
Tipton - RS SO (will likely get a medical RS year and have three years of eligibility)
Lopes - RS JR
Matthews - SO
Ffrench - SO
Flowers - RS FR
Butler - FR
Smith - FR

Henderson should be moved into more of a hybrid RB role but he's good at the WR screens too.

Matthews should redshirt, bulk up, and move to TE where he would be a better fit.

Flowers looked the part but couldn't catch. Same goes for Clark. I don't have a lot of faith in those guys magically growing new hands.

Gotta hope a young guy steps up, because RaRa, Tipton, and Henderson aren't scaring anyone at WR. Ffrench has flashed some potential, but also some disappointment.

WR is my biggest concern on offense.

Agree with everything you mentioned.

I see a lot of posters saying Tipton will start, first, he needs to prove he can stay healthy and secondly its not like he's put up a bunch of stats prior to getting hurt. We needs a few to really step up next year, of course we've been saying this for awhile now.

The good news Pitt has plenty young WR with upside. How much upside will be determined by who emerges in the spring and summer camps. It also doesn't hurt that Lopes, Henderson, Ffrench, Matthews and Tipton all have experience, understand the speed of the game and know what to improve on to become viable options.

And, again, hopefully Butler's injury will allow him to return for spring ball. I recall reading the staff and others were VERY high on what they saw prior to his injury. It's wide open though. Would shock me Butler, Smith and Flowers are the top WR1 and WR2. Who knows? Gonna be some fierce competition.

No Tipton is still with the program. I said "since departed project Gentry Ivory", the under the radar Texas kid that Chryst recruited, who is gone.
Oh good!
I like that kid, he works hard, he's a reliable reciever, and I doubt HCPN will have to bail him out of jail to get him on the field!

I doubt he'll try out for the show Cops like Bookster and Blair did!

Ra Ra is gone? To quote Marty McFly's older brother at the end of Back to the Future, "When the hell did this happen? why am I always the last to find out about things around here?"

+ Potentional of Chris Clark. He looks like Greg Olsen out there and is a matchup nightmare.
+ depth at WR should make for better competition in camp. I think the coaches can tell the whole WR group honestly that every role is up for grabs. Hopefully it drives them all.
+ We saw Weah look better with Pickett. Our WRs could be better than we thank.
- My one worry is no deep threat. Could be Mathews, but he needs a lot of work.

id have to guess Matthews is the most likely incumbent for this role. whether he can do it or not is anyone's guess. Smith looks like he has some nice size and speed to him but what WR doesn't look good in their highlight film..

The things with Matthews is he is still raw. he never received the proper coaching in HS and he is still learning a lot out there. I think everyone was expecting him to be Tyler Boyd part 2 but he was more of a project. I still think he can turn it on and be a impact WR. As previously mentioned he seems like a good downfield blocker. Now he needs to run better routes and learn the nuances of the position because it doesn't seem like he knows that part yet.

I like that Tipton is coming back, he is our most complete WR.

Nobody in their right mind was expecting Mathews to be Tyler Boyd. Mathews best attribute is blocking. He's not good at getting yards after the catch. Two years in, stats are not good. He's not going to be a impact WR at this level. What you see right now is what your going to get. He's actually playing the wrong position, needs to beef up some and play TE.

I think the WR we have coming back will do much better.

Some of you calling this year and some young guys bust based on this year are just not seeing the big picture. We had NO QB, and thus, not much production out of the WR spot. Furthermore, then you dump on Flowers for dropping 2 balls. I think Mathews dropped more, but coaches went with him more. I dont think Flowers is done at all, although, if he doesnt climb the depth chart he may transfer after the season. I do think the kid Narduzzi visited may be the type to play as a true freshman, and Butler and Smith also seem like the flashier guys. Overall we seem to have a great mix of deep threats, possession guys, and slot guys to make Pickett happy all year long. Furthermore, with the youth, the chemistry will get better and better over the next 3 seasons with Pickett (or whoever may be QB)

I suppose Redshirt Frosh Darrius Street (yes, Devin's younger brother) will also be on the clock at wide receiver.

These guys you list will all play, but you'll never see them on the field together. They're our smaller receivers, slot type guys, and this staff puts a premium on blocking at the WR position. So, one of Mathews or Butler, or even Sear will be out there at the WR position at all times.

As some have said... The hardest part of critiquing the WR's was the QB play...
Lots of poorly thrown passes. No downfield accuracy. Lots of missed opportunities with Open TE's over the middle. Some sliding catches, etc...
WR play will get better, when catchable passes are thrown.
I think this also is tied to many that complained the WR's were not getting separation. It is hard to get separation when your routes would potentially put you out of range. Weah ran by defenders in 2016. He never was able to run a Fly pattern full speed in 2017.
I'll stop pointing out the possible issues. and hope that the future holds better QB play...
