WRs

Words out of spring ball was that Weah was pretty much over his yips - self admitted yips BTW - and is doing very well. He publicly admitted it was mental vice physical. He also had 3 catches for 102 yards in the spring scrimmage so i think he's on his way.

Here is an article written after the spring game.

Weah is even less proven than Henderson, having yet to catch a pass in an actual game. At times, he got ample snaps, though struggled to catch the ball when it was thrown to him. Weah was frank about the root of his troubles.

“I’ve struggled in the past with catching the ball and just having high confidence,” Weah said.

Now, Weah said, his confidence is higher than ever. Plus, performing well in front of a crowd - albeit in a scrimmage - was important for his spirits, quarterback Nathan Peterman said.

“I thought it was good to come to Heinz Field and do that again, especially for him mentally,” Peterman said. “Now in the season he can come back with this mentally and be like, “I made plays here, I’ve done it before.’”

Weah said him and Peterman are continuing to grow a rapport, which has developed significantly over the spring.

“In offseason workouts we would always work on catching and throwing and running routes,” Weah said.

Narduzzi would like that connection to continue to sprout, as he’ll need someone to step up as a deep threat in the passing game.

Regardless of what some fans think there is solid talent at the receivers position. - and I'll go so far as to say I think Ford will be our star offensive player this season. You just cannot discount a 19.2 yards per catch average. If it was on only a few catches I'd say it was a fluke - but he had 26 receptions last season. He's going to get the amount of catches that VincePitt above says - maybe even more. This is an experienced and very good receiver.

Put it this way - Ford had over half Boyd's total yardage on about 1/4 of the catches...

To say there isn't talent there is a bit shortsighted, but I can see how one could say that. But again, Tyler Boyd was the elephant in the WR unit last season so we really didn't get a chance to see others have enough opportunity to really show what they can do.

Last note and take it FWIW - a good friend of mine spent an evening in a beach town with Canada in the early summer and Canada said this in conversation: "We're going to score a ton of points if Peterman stays healthy". Now - we have all heard stuff like that before but those who know me know I try to shoot straight and so I take that at face value - we are going to score big points in the passing game and it will be on longer intermediate and deep throws. "If Peterman..." is the key phrase there - we are opening up the offense this season.
Any coach who wants to toss the ball around with Nate Peterman is pretty much digging his own grave. Nate is competent, nothing more.

Hands can't be taught, but hands can be improved with coaching and practice?

Larry Fitzgerald came out of the womb catching footballs like that, but he needed to spend thousands of hours of drills with coaching along the way?

Then you mention how you scored four TD's back at Polk High School.

Great content.
Yeah, but his hands and skills are so poor he can't even get on the field when we have desperately needed WR help for 3 years. This isn't a 1st year player struggling or a guy who is short on the athletic ability to make a difference.

He is a junior with two more years to contribute. His biggest problem is he's been good enough to see time and completely squandered it. The fact he still saw limited playing time despite his lack of production during game time leads me to believe that the 'yips' isn't a convenient excuse. The coaching staff and his teammates see something we haven't, presumably in practice. The idea that hands arent something teachable and improvable is laughable though. Weah's hands aren't going to be Fitzgerald, but I don't think a first ballot hall of famer is the right measuring stick for any college player.

Hey only at Pitt does a guy never get a chance to prove himself his junior year, he has to be awesome getting off the bus from high school....

Some of you need to log off and go start your car in the garage and sit there....for like two hours

WTF? No one said that.

you want us to go kill ourselves? That's a bit harsh..

Umm have you read some of the comments about Weah?
Yes. He has yet to contribute anything, despite having more opportunities at Pitt than perhaps any other program in the country, thanks to our lack of talent or depth at WR. No one said he had to be awesome as soon as he got to Pitt. People said he has done nothing and the main reasons for that are his hands and his inability to run routes.

Which part of that is untrue or unfair?

Hyperbole
OK, well that's good. Pitt fans are being d*cks towards Weah, way over board. I would love him to be a player this year just to shove it up the rear of some of these pitt fans that are bashing him. Im sure they would change their tunes though, deny ever saying it..

I wondered why he doesnt return kickoffs either? I imagine it must be a hands issue. We should have quite a lot of speedsters returning kicks this year. I can see our special teams being special

Who has been unfair? Who has said anything that isn't true?

Anyone remember Dwight Stone, he was an WR/KR in the NFL for the Steelers, the Carolina Panthers and the Jets. Stone originally signed with Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent in 1987. He was an outstanding special teams gunner and kick returner for eight years with the Steelers. He was timed at "4.25 in the 40 yard dash". Former Steelers coach Chuck Noll said that Stone was "the fastest player I've ever coached over 40 yards". He was nicknamed "Hands of Stone" for his lack of hands! He was a small (6'0" 190lbs) RB coming out of Mid Tenn St, so catching the ball was not his forte! His best years in the NFL were with the Steelers 1991, 32 catches, 649 yards, 20.3 avg and 5 tds! 92, 34 catches, 501 yrds, 14.7 avg and 3 tds! 93, 41 catches, 587 yrds, 14.3 avg and 2 tds! His roll was a deep threat! There are 5 WR's that can be on the field at one time, if they all contribute as a unit, I'll be happy!

I mentioned a specific example from my own personal experience to bolster my point. You have nothing--so like any good know-nothing douchebag you resort to insults and criticize the substance in my post. What a valuable contributor.

Catching a football at the college level is a special atnletic talent unto itself, like speed or body control. You can't teach that stuff. You can work on it and improve it but the natural ability has to be there already. The guy hasnt shown the ability to do it yet, that is indisputable. As for his three catches in the spring game this year, he had 5 for over 150 yards last year-yet he hasn't registered a single catch in a game in 2 years at a very thin position group. . With all of his size, speed and athletic ability we were his only P5 offer. Maybe he'll suddenly be the second coming of Terrell Owens this season, and I'd love to see that happen, but the smart money says that's unlikely.

Yes, there is a complete difference between being able to teach and improve upon a skill and somebody's acumen for that skill. I literally said that previously. Wide Receivers improve their hands all the time with coaching. Hands are absolutely taught.

You can't teach someone to be as good as Larry Fitzgerald. You can help someone's swim times but you can't teach them to be Michael Phelps.

OK, all naysayers and JW bashers, we get it, he has had an opportunity and like everyone else at the WR spot on this roster (besides Ford), he hasn't grasped and taken advantage of the opportunities. We get it, we got it, we all agree. Some of us who aren't douchebags (mainly me and only me), are optimistically believing that he will become a productive player on this year's team. He has the physical skill sets, size and speed but yes, needs to work on the intangibles that make a good athlete into a good college WR. A tall task no doubt and none of us are expecting Terrell Owens..

So to conclude this, we get it, a lot of you think he has no chance. Your thoughts have been duly noted, you are on record and we completely understand your thoughts and opinions on the matter. Please just understand, if and when he produces this year, some of us (Me and probably only me) will take great joy in shoving your pessimistic, cynical, cheap shot remarks thoroughly up your behind. Im looking at you Jrip and PH-dude. Until then, I said good day..

I didn't take any cheap shots and you made up a quote from PHPanther...

I cut/pasted that directly from PHpanther's quote. he deleted it to rid the evidence. YOu took no cheap shots, i'll give you that. You are pretty adamant though about his failures, letting us know again and again and again. All fun and games JRip, I know you are a big pitt fan..

I just try to be honest and even. I'm not sure why others (not you) can't do that. I'm going to call it out every time.

I did not delete it. One of the mods deleted it. Why would I delete something I feel to be 100% true?
