Yellen applying for waiver

How good is this guy?

Not sure anyone really knows for sure. The kid that started over him (Daniels) is highly thought of and played good ball so Yellen transferred. Played one game against USC and wasn’t bad. Threw for almost 300. 4 tds and 2 ints. We’re probably gonna find out at some point how good he is.

Dang, he wants to play right away; gotta admire his confidence, willing to go head-to-head with a 2+ year starting senior. Read something on Twitter where Whipple reached out to him only a few hours after he entered the portal, tells you what they think of him.

If one of the best true freshman QBs wasn’t starting at Sparky, he’d probably still be there entering his second season as the starter. Seems promising. We’ll see.

Sounds like this has some similiarities to the Max Browne situation (Darnold starting over him, played some and had some effective moments, top recruit, came from out west). Not exact paralells (like years of eligibility left), but some. Hopefully, he will make more of an impact at Pitt!

Ummm - thats not really it. His 2019 season was a redshirt year - so he has only 4 years left. If he has to sit out this year that uses up one of those 4 years. So no downside to trying to be eligible next season even if he doesn't play. He will have 3 years eligibility left after next year no matter if he has to sit out or if he plays

So why not try to be eligible just in case a backup is needed

Good point. Honestly, I didn’t know him sitting out would count against his eligibility. That makes sense then.

With whipple and Narduzzi's propensity to disallow any sort of QB competition with Pickett last year, you'd think Yellen wouldn't want to be given eligibility immediately. Outside of an injury, he has zero chance to even compete for the starting job this year. There is nothing he can do to win this job from Pickett, no matter how great he performs..

So with that being the case, why would he even want to lose a year being best case, the backup..

Where is there any kind of proof that Whipple and Narduzzi don’t allow competition for Pickett? Your fever dreams and those of others don’t count. I’d say recruiting was the source of no competition. Beville gets a pass since he’s a true frosh. But George? And Patti wasn’t all that impressive the game he played.

They’re lifelong coaches. I would imagine at some point some coaches get bugs up their arses and maybe pass over a kid. But by and large those who they think give them the best chance to win play. If he’s eligible he’ll compete with Pickett. And that would be a good thing. I’m in the middle on Pickett. He’s ok but there’s lots of room for better whether it comes from him or someone else.

Whipple and narduzzi’s quotes during spring last year. You mean, besides that??

yellen, beville and Patti are competing for backup. They will have zero opportunity to win this job. It is an impossibility. Nothing they can do in spring or summer, no matter how great they perform, will let them win the job. It’s been decided.

I don’t know what quotes you refer to but I’m guessing they recognized that Pickett was the cream of a weak crop.

As far as the rest of it - go troll someone else.

“He’s the starter” -Whipple on March 6th 2019, after the first spring practice.

Don’t hold your breath for a qb battle fellas, just like last year, the decision has been made.

Nope, I’m good here. Save the year, redshirt and compete for the job in ‘21.

If he’s eligible and doesn’t play they can still do that. If he’s better than Pickett he should be playing. Now I think It’s likely Pickett who will be the guy but if this waiver is granted he’ll get a shot.

Again I believe that’s because they realized there was nobody to challenge him.
He realized that after the first spring practice where they aren’t even allowed to wear pads?? Amazing.. the other qbs must have really been unimpressive in their stretching routines in shorts for Whipple to come to such a definite conclusion so quickly.

Over / under on Whipple announcing his starting QB is before the second practice of spring camp.

They go in to camp having a pretty good idea who a lot of the starters are likely to be. But guys are given chances. If they earn it they’ll play. Had Patti or George showed they were better they’d have moved up. I’m assuming that the plan for Beville was a rs but who knows there.

4 in 6 years is the rule.

Wrong. 4 seasons in 5 years

http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms

Division I five-year clock: If you play at a Division I school, you have five-calendar years in which to play four seasons of competition. Your five-year clock starts when you enroll as a full-time student at any college. Thereafter, your clock continues, even if you spend an academic year in residence as a result of transferring; decide to red shirt, if you do not attend school or even if you go part-time during your college career.

Since Yellen redshirted at ASU in 2019 - he has 4 more calendar years left on his clock to play 4 seasons. So 2020 will run one year off his clock whether he is eligible or not

Correct. Six year situations have been granted, but only on appeal to the NCAA due to injury histories that have cost the appealing athlete one or more full seasons. Another exception has been religious sabbaticals (e. g., the Mormon mission so many Brigham Young athletes take).

That's what I was thinking. Why not petition to play in '20? He has nothing to lose.

Yes the ncaa has to approve but it is 4 out of 6 maximum.......right?

The sixth year is only approved on occasion for a medical hardship.

That's actually a more accurate clarification than what I gave earlier. The medical situations to not have to be limited to injury (I think it was Toledo that had a football player who lost two seasons due to a blood disorder that required chemotherapy).

I Don't think he is a positive. Keep in mind why he left.
Pitts history with transfer QB is not great plus if you keep brining in transfers at that position every year it sets back your recruting .
No 5 (or even 4) star QB will come here.
Isn't there some kid in Clemson who did pretty good as a freshman and sophmore ?
Wouldn't be surprised it beville left because of this ,especially if yellen gets the waiver. Big lost in my opinion.i think Beville will turn out to be a good QB -Just maybe not for Pitt.
Can you say Joe Flacco.

Can you say Thomas MacVittie? You have no idea what Beville will be and neither does anyone else.

This kid was a true freshman so comparisons to guys like Max Browne aren’t exactly apples to apples. Browne was at USC for 4 years and got no run. Yellen came in with a higher rated kid and Daniels beat him out. Doesn’t mean Yellen can’t play. He may suck but nobody really knows.

And Nate Peterman says hi.

Narduzzi would have been stupid not to take this kid. We’ll see what happens.

Agreed, and add Tom Savage to the list as well.

There’s no way Yellen was going to get a chance to play at ASU outside of injury. It was his misfortune that they recruited over him and were able to get one of the top ranked qb’s in the country on campus. He played one freaking game, so we have no idea yet how good he is or isn’t yet. Definitely had to take the shot though.

Yellen is far better than any freshman QB recruit we could have brought in with this class. And he has essentially the same amount of eligibility. His recruitment to Pitt is most definitely a positive

Right. We have a women's basketball player, Aysia Bugg, who is in her sixth year. She missed one season due to a knee injury, and then last year when she was a redshirt senior she played a few games at the beginning of the season and then found that she had a blood clot issue so she wasn't allowed to play the rest of the season. She petitioned the NCAA for a sixth year this year, and they gave it to her.

She's still only going to play four full seasons, but they gave her a sixth year to play the four in because of two major medical issues.

Yellen was as good as, if not better than, recruiting a QB this year.

You bring up Flacco, but ignore all of the other QBs who transferred and were never heard of again. If Beville leaves, it will be because Yellen is in front of him.

My take on this is:

1. Why not try for a waiver. Even if he gets it, he can still RS if he doesn't win the job.

2. Patti is never going to be the GUY. I just dont see it with him.

3. Beville - who knows but I was surprised he didnt play at all in those last 4 games. Even Phil Jurkovec got 4 games in as a true frosh. Lots of places do that.

Well from the credible information on this thread Yellen loses the year whether he redshirts or not so if he is granted the waiver there is no RS option, he gets a 2nd or 3 Rd string slot if he doesn't win a job . From my vantage point with today's transfer portal etc, Yellen is better than a recruit because he has one more factor to consider before transferring out, that his he will run out of time.

The very first post in this thread knocks out your #1. #2 and #3 are purely subjective on your part.

"Yellen, who transferred in from ASU after his freshman season (in which he redshirted), was expected to sit out in 2020 & compete for the starting job in 2021. Likely still the case, but it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Story later from his meeting w/ reporters.

1. Agree 100%
2. Agree 100% , I still he will transfer.
3. The last 4 games where too close to even put Patti in..
