The bloody weekend that was in the ACC

If we start on Wednesday:
VT lost to Jacksonville

Thursday
Miami (Drake], Syracuse (Tex), UVa (Ten) lost

Friday
Miami (OK St), Syr (TT), and UVa (SJU) went back to back. And ND and SMU got in on the action losing home games to Elon and Mississippi State.

Saturday
GT blasted by 23 in their own gym by Cincy

Sunday
Miami isnt even trying anymore. And Pitt loses but at least looks ok.

Wins over "Top 10 Conference" teams (to include MWC, WCC, A10, American, MVC) this weekend

Duke beat Arizona
Pitt beat LSU
Stanford beat Santa Clara
Cal beat Air Force
FSU beat UMass & Temple to take the 1990s A10 Tournament

Some thoughts:

- Pitt - we are NCAAT good but we were last year too. Are we going to have enough of a resume. Joe will say "just play good." Its not that simple. We arent Duke. There is a science to crafting a resume. And hopefully we will have done enough when the fateful day comes.

- Stanford & FSU - the next great hopes. Stanford has the best big guy in the league and probably the best coach. They've been squeaking out wins over bad teams but they are 6-0. They have neutral site games vs Grand Canyon and Oregon and also ACC games vs Cal & Clemson but they could come rolling into Pittsburgh at something like 13-1 or 12-2. Perhaps this is a team that can use their easy early schedule to develop into something. As for FSU, I think I picked them 16th ot 17th. Totally wrote them off but like Stanford, they are winning. They do have a loss but its to Florida. I am more confident about Stanford than FSU but its something to keep an eye on.

- If we are playing NCAAT Eliminator: Miami, GT, and VT are done. Keep an eye on Cal & BC. Both 1 loss each but they have low talent levels and both can clinch an early off-season soon.

- Looking ahead to Thanksgiving Week:

- NC St plays Purdue then either BYU or Mississippi

- Wake plays Florida then either Min or Wichita in the Disney Tournament which I guess is only 4 teams now.

-Clemson plays San Fran then either PSU or Fordham

- ND plays Rutgers & Houston in that NIL Pay for Play tournament

- Louisville is at Atlantis and they play Indiana, then either WVU or Gonzaga, and 1 more

- UNC plays Dayton then either Auburn or Iowa State then 1 more

- SMU plays California Baptist then either Fresno or Washington State

- VT plays Michigan then either South Carolina or Xavier

Honest Take

The reality of the situation is that Pitt came off of a 3-9 season last year and we are 7-4 today.

None of us are happy with the recent play, but if I told you at the beginning of the season that Pitt would be 7-4 while having the 9th and 12th team in the country on our schedule, I believe most fans would be happy with that result.

Teams don’t go from 3-9 to 11-0 in a span of one season.

Takeaways from the season:

We found our QB. I know some might argue this point, but early on in the season when Eli was provided time in the pocket he was able to beat teams in the air or on the ground. On our 4 game losing streak our QBs have been sacked 16 times with a significant amount of pressures and knockdowns. Just a reminder, Eli is a freshman and has significant room for growth.

During our 7 game winning streak, we were sacked only 16 times total. The sack increase has a direct correlation with losing Branson Taylor and having other OL like Jacoby picking up nagging injuries.

Fortifying the OL is the biggest offseason priority for our team. Bring in multiple OL through the transfer portal that have been successful with experience. This could be players from lower end P4 teams or mid majors. Our LT and LG will have graduated after this season as well.

Our offensive plays take way too long to develop. We don’t have 5 and 6 seconds back in the pocket to allow these long route trees to develop. Could be a mixture of not having a WR group skilled enough to create early separation or Kade’s unwillingness to adjust his play calls to shorter and quicker developing routes. I think it is a mixture of both. We are dropping multiple balls a game and we aren’t chipping the DE every play with a TE or a RB when we are throwing the ball, which is inviting pressure right into the face of our QB.

I think the lack of talent from our receiver core can be successfully addressed. When you have the right QB under center the skill players will come.

We all knew the biggest issue for our defense this year would be the DL, and it has been. It’s been a position of great strength for us in years past. We all knew going into the season that we didn’t do enough to replace the transfers of Dayon Hayes and Samuel Okunlola or the senior departures of Devin Danielson, David Green, Deandre Jules, Tyler Bentley, Nate Temple, Bam Brima….with all of the players who graduated and transferred we didn’t adequately fill the holes…would have been shocked if we could have filled all of those vacancies.

We do have youth on the DL currently, but we still need to address this issue in the transfer portal.

The season has been a success even if we lose the last two games of the year. We found our QB. That alone allows us to compete for a conference championship every year as long as we surround him with the right pieces.

Simply, you are never as good as you think and you are never as bad as you think. There are more positives to take away from this season than negatives.

Rational thoughts after calming down

After reading some other posters thoughts and just thinking rationally here is my thoughts

Offense problems: Injuries up front and to Holes has hurt. Holestein is a Freshman. Period. But high high ceiling. You have to stick with him. Let's face it Nick Saban approved of him going to Bama. Enough said there. He still has learning to do but showed us he is a dog and can make the though throws on a dime.

Reid has been played and used way too much. Needed more rotation and I think Hammond being out early hurt us now. If Hammond was a go early he would have got more carries and teams wouldn't have got a lock on Reid like they do now. Plus the guy comes up limping every game at some point.

O-Line just went downhill. Injuries and just flat out can't protect now or get a push in the run game at all.

Receivers all sudden for the dropsies .... Making crazy catches early on and now took a step back with concentration.

Defense: Narduzzi defense has always slowed for the screens and outside plays to be open. Plain and simple. I've read up and watched his seminar explaining his defense and which players have which responsibility and it asks a lot from his players. This sometimes is the main cause.

However we don't have the dogs in the D-Line. Usually we have least 1 guy needing double teamed. Not this year or last year really. What this means is we are blitzing the linebackers a little more, which is not part of the base scheme of things. Narduzzi likes to rush only 4 down lineman and play a cover 4 match man in the back. With linebackers having the flats and the middle of the field for crosses and TE leaks etc. if you blitz that linebacker .. there leaves a gap in the defense and forces more pressure in the DBs. We need someone to really step up next year on the D-Line. Matlack has not stepped up all year. I forget he even exists most the time.

Linebackers and DBs .... Not much to say about them. Linebackers have been stellar and the DBs despite giving up some plays have been better than some before them. Noticed DBs actually turning head and looking for the ball now instead of running hands up into the receiver.

Defense really comes down to the 4 down lineman needing help.

Coaching: Kade gets a pass...young and new and I think with time he will have a great scheme in place.

Bates... Can't really blame him. He's restricted to what Narduzzi wants to do.

Narduzzi- one more year. I like what he has done. I think he's a good players coach. However something doesn't give still with the penalties and dumb stuff that happens. There is no accountability for players commiting these penalties over and over. Comes down to the coaching.

Congratulations to Coach Franklin

I give Franklin credit, they are almost certain to go 11-1 this year. He exceeded my expectations, I was thinking they'd go 10-2. I thought he would slip up in a road game somewhere along the way, but he won them. It helped that USC and Wisconsin were under .500 in conference. Washington was another opponent on their schedule that at the start of the year that might have looked like decent competition but they in all likelihood will also finish under .500.

Wisconsin Game & Other Dribbles...

**I’ve been writing postgame “dribbles” for over 25 years, but this is a first.

**That is…I’ve never had to dictate postgame thoughts to a willing passenger (willing is a stretch) during our trek home.

**Thankfully, my William & Mary sophomore is up to the task, although they’ve pledged to insert a few of their own words along the way (Yep, in parentheses).

**I should say we’ve had a nice trip. In our drive to White Sulphur Springs we encountered wonderful weather and enjoyed splendid conversation in anticipation of our epic battle with the Badgers.

**Unfortunately the trip home is understandably disappointing. But that doesn’t mean we weren’t very proud of our Panthers.

**In short, on this day Tonje proved to be an unstoppable force within a battle of two pretty darn good teams.

**Throughout our first six wins, I’ve suggested the Panthers are still not quite the team I think they should be, but I think it should be thought of as good news that I still have that same thought tonight.

**The easiest explanation of course is that hopefully we’ll get more than two minutes out of Damian Dunn in future games. In fact it is reasonable to assert that regular minutes from Damian tonight may have been enough to make up the minutes (we needed his defense).

**Offensively, we still know that better days are ahead for Jaland. He’s still forcing it a bit more than he should instead of letting most things come to him. But this will get better.

**We also got to witness a mini coming-out party of Amsal Delalić (and Beebah I think to some degree), and tonight we finally got a better look at that player we hope he can be.

**But offense notwithstanding, what Capel and crew must examine is why we were nearly powerless to stop Wisconsin in the second half. There aren’t many games you’re going to win when your opponent scores 54 points in the latter 20.

**Foul trouble was part of the issue, but I have to wonder if a tinker to the zone a little earlier should have been in order.

**But all of that amounts to typical fan second-guessing. Tonight we were a good team who lost to a team who is just a little better at the moment (and has a future draft pick).

**Additionally, it’s not hard to see how this year’s team is strides ahead of last years at the same stretch. Hopefully we can still improve as they did, though.

**On a completely different note, I’m not sure I’ve ever attended a college basketball game with the announcer calling out the number of seconds remaining on a shot clock. That said, the experience watching the game at the Greenbrier was certainly one that was worth a special trip – despite their issues with technology and lighting.

**I was proud to be there and see a few old friends among the Pitt fans at the event, however, I must give the highest props to the Wisconsin faithful who showed out. They topped us 3 to 1 both in number and volume (not that we didn’t try to be loud, at least I did. I don’t know about my dad).

**I hope the Panthers will hold their heads high through the holiday on their way to Columbus. I can’t say I’d be predicting a win, but I’m confident we will at least enjoy another great contest like tonight.

There's a number of things I would point directly to as to why we lost this game without blaming the loss on losing Dunn.

1) We got a C game at best from Lowe. He is one of if not the team leader, we need an A game in a game like this. 4 turnovers and poor shooting and shot selection is on him.

2) Corhen was great scoring the ball and finishing with 16 points. 2 rebounds from Corhen is not going to cut it. That is Fede level poor and not top 150 in the country worthy.

3) Depth is weak on defense and on the glass. Beebah getting 3 rebounds was a bright spot.

4) Guillermo was one of the big reasons we helped build the lead in the first place. But we have to get better 3 point shooting from him as his slump from 3 continues. And its now a slump

5) I made it a point of emphasis pregame that we win the rebound margin and turnover margin. We lost both as a team.

If there is a bright spot, its Delalic efficiency metrics after his 4th game. His season numbers now are looking good. Time to play him and find out what he really brings to the table.

Cannot understate the importance of these next 3 games

Kante isnt P5 caliber right now and may not be for awhile. He's a "project." I think we all liked to believe he was this Top 100 plug and play but he isnt. What I'd like to know is if we let Fede walk or maybe we couldn't afford to keep him as backup. He's only playing 14 MPG at TT but would be an excellent backup 5. And as good as Corhen is offensively, he's a below average defender, whereas Fede was average to slightly above average. Tonje dude was running unabated layup lines against us.

Before this game, you went out of your way to rip on Delalic not being ready.

Delalic now has a season ORTG offensive power rating of 120. He's now shooting 59% from the floor, 50% from 3, and now has 7 assists to 4 turnovers on the season. He was 4-4 shooting against Top 20 ranked Wisconsin in his 4th basketball game. He also has an assist rate of 24% which is excellent.

You should take a timeout with predictions 7 games deep into the season about which players can play and which cant.
