UVA loss on PN and staff

I’m not sure how the coaches can be blamed for something as basic as pre-snap penalties. At what point do the players -yes, the players - take the responsibility for something that should be second-nature by the latter half of the season?

These professional players should be able to break a huddle, line-up, and run a play on a snap count without difficulty. It’s really that simple.

The same thing as dropped passes: when your quarterback is getting minimal time to set-up and throw, it behooves the receiver to help his quarterback when the quarterback throws a catchable ball. A dropped pass is more of a reflection of the receiver, and not the coaching staff.

Thoughts

Let’s start with the obvious.. the decline in Holstein is evident. The OL is bad but he also isn’t making plays. The low throw to Mumpfield in the third quarter is likely a touchdown with a good throw.

OL. Not making excuses because of injuries. Everyone has them. Taylor went down and this OL is inept. How is there this little depth? I mean they just get bullied. And they don’t not open any running lanes.

WRs. Man we talked about how well they played early in the year. Made all the routine catches and a lot of combat catches. Now they make neither.

DL. Need more beef. Too many undersized guys like Kancey (these guys aren’t) and they get bullied in the run game.

LB. Been ok. Put a target on their back with the sharks motto.

The continuous man coverage on third and long is maddening. 3rd and 15 and they blitz lol.

Officiating. Hate making excuses here. Pitt didn’t look good. Not bad enough where I’d say they flat out deserved to lose. The 4th down stop, the 2pt conversion hold, and no call late hit on Reid on the last drive were brutal.

I really don’t think that game goes any differently with Holstein in all game. But man, idk what Yarnell was looking at on that final pick.

Was going to withhold this piece of info til after the season but whatever. Heard Bell’s pass concept are good and his run concepts are bad before the season started. Talked to the person after the UNC game and said “idc as long as they win” well that’s coming to fruition…

If possible I’d try to upgrade the OL coach. try to find an experienced guy who can help with run game X and O’s.

Idk what Pitt’s record is on the ACCN 8pm slot but feel like it is not good lol.

You wanna know why people don’t show up? You’re 7-1.. 6 spots out of a playoff spot and 50k plus show and you look not even bad just truly atrocious.

Nate the Great

1:45, 2TO, ball in + territory.

What a dumb throw. He’s shown he has very little route depth perception in this offense.

His first INT was a Go ball but problem was it was under thrown and into double coverage.

He protects the ball, we win. No doubt.

We’re all seeing why he wasn’t QB1 coming out of camp. Unfortunately he had to prove it in a L
I don’t think anyone would argue with a straight face that Yarnell should be QB1. But just for some perspective, Yarnell came in cold and led the offense on exactly the same number of TD drives that Eli did, with far fewer snaps in the game and no first team practice reps. Eli was gifted a FG via a turnover (3 play drive for -4 yards before it was kicked) and led a modest 24 yard FG drive. The picks were the big difference, but Eli was just as capable of turning the ball over as Yarnell, most of his throws before he got hurt were way off target.

Long way of saying we’re far from OK at QB.

Steelers/Redskins

It’s just typical tribalism. I mean, if one wants to argue that he’s not worthy of the #32 pick, that’s fair. Poker compared him to Artie Burns, which is also fair because Artie was a #1 pick.

But he’s obviously way better than Burns objectively, as he’s often trusted to match up with the other teams best receiver. For guys to say he’s horrible, call him Toast, should be out of the league, etc…that’s just crazy talk.
You don’t have to convince me. I’m on record many times here saying if he played anywhere else (except maybe WVU) this wouldn’t be going on near as much.

Nate the Great

I don't think he does. There's an noticable difference in velocity between Eli & Nate on simple out routes
Leaving Yarnell out of it, if you’re seeing good arm strength and zip out of Eli, I’m not sure what kind of lenses you’re looking through. His out throws are marshmallows. There’s no zip on any of his throws. He’s constantly short arming intermediate throws and bouncing them at his receivers’ feet.

Perspective - NIL

Look - not meant to excuse last night’s performance. Just not good enough and not acceptable. The penalties, general offensive performance, giving up 3rd and 15, etc… just good enough. Criticize away.

And… starting out 7-0 and feeling like we had something to play for also made it a lot more disappointing than if our schedule was different and we were like 4-3 at this point.

But… there’s been so many “Fire Narduzzi” or “not okay with mediocrity” posts and I swear some of you guys just do not live in reality.

Let’s look at our schedule and compare NIL budgets

Kent State - Pitt
Cincy - Cincy (Karlo confirmed)
WVU - WVU
YSU - Pitt
UNC - unsure ?
Cal - Pitt ? Could be wrong
Syracuse - Pitt? Although maybe comparable with new staff there and investment
SMU - SMU
UVA - Pitt
Clemson - Clemson
Lville - Lville
BC - Pitt

So… yeah. If you look at that, you would reasonably expect 6-8 wins… and that’s the exact range we’ll fall into.

I’m not saying it defends every coaching decision or will determine every outcome. Obviously you should be trying to maximize the program. Nobody should be STRIVING solely for 7-8 wins.

But you just cannot take your ball and go home because Pitt won 7-8 games…. When that is exactly how our program/collective is funded.

You know why Indiana is good this year? It seems like Cignetti is a really good coach… but they supposedly had $12-14M for him for NIL. He’s quoted as saying he was pleasantly surprised, more than he was promised.

So yeah. Last night sucked and we should all be miserable.

But the whole “accepting mediocrity” argument is so damn childish and not grounded in reality.

Holstein

I’m not a physician, but having had a football-caused concussion once in my life (at an early age), I can vouch that some of these players are probably being rushed into action well before they should be.

Being able to walk, talk, and perform activities of daily life can’t compare to playing quarterback at a high level. While a lot of research has been done re: the effects of concussions, I suspect that they’ve only scratched the surface of their knowledge of the effects of multiple concussions.
One week is way too soon for a contact sport.
