Good objective post. I know there is some doom and gloom on the board but your assessment is not that far off. Bad tackling extended drives and created scoring opportunities for SMU. A bad PITT turnover and some inexperience by a young QB (it happens...he is still very good) cost PITT another 10 points. I think the delta is about 17 points. The final score should have been closer like 41-35 SMU.

SMU is a good team at home at Homecoming weekend. This was a tough game. We will bounce back against Virginia.

You’re including Yarnell’s garbage time TDs in your reassessment of what the actual score should have been?

Virginia is a pivotal game

Syracuse is okay. I wouldn't call them good. They needed a 4th quarter comeback to beat a Virginia Tech team playing without its starting quarterback this past week, and it was at home.

They were also without their stud RB.

Drones and Tuten are their entire offense, with it mostly being Tuten.

Most analytic models have Cuse at like a 60-ish ranking.

I think that’s probably about right.

Cold Look at Statistics Only

Did not watch last night's game so the views below are solely based on examining the box score for the game's stats--without being influenced by emotions from having actually watched the game.

1. Terrible 2nd Quarter that began to really go down hill with Saul's missed FG which would have made the score at the time 14-6 vs keeping it at 14-3.

2. Other than the 2nd quarter scoring was roughly even over the other 3 quarters---Pitt 25 pts, SMU 24 pts. The 3rd and 4th quarter results suggest Pitt players did not quit.

3. Total offense SMU 467 yds to Pitt's 453 yds. Based on the theory that an efficient team should score about 1 TD for every 100 yards of offense---Hypothetically the score should have/could have been something more like Pitt 31 -- SMU 34. Obviously, SMU exceeded that 34 by 14 and Pitt failed by 6 of scoring 31.

4. Four fumbles with 1 lost and 1 interception thrown obviously standout as big negatives for Pitt.

5. The two long scoring plays were big for SMU as Pitt won time of possession.

Overall, based on the stats, and given that it was a road game, the loss doesn't look quite as bad to me as the score indicates.

It’s time for Urban

It is apparent that Pat Naduzzi is a fraud. This game was to decide the future of the ACC, and of course Narduzzi and his goons underperform. There are many great options available. I think number 1 should be Urban Meyer. He has a massive name and can bring millions of NIL revenue to Pitt that smuck Tepper refuses to contribute. It is time to get rid of Narduzzi and hire an elite coach like Saban or Urban.
This Waffle John dude is quickly becoming my favorite nut job in these parts...

Virginia is a pivotal game

According to the coaches, Syracuse is the 30th best team in the country. I'd argue that's a good team we beat and beat in spectacular fashion. Now SMU is obviously a step above and we failed that test big time, but I do think we had a test against a good team and did well. Let's hope Narduzzi can find a way to replicate whatever he had for the Cuse game against the remaining good teams on the schedule, there are definitely more coming.

They also lost to Stanford and should have lost to UNLV, which is probably their best win but not a very notable one. The best thing UNLV did was beat Kansas before everyone figured out Kansas actually sucks this season.

They'll probably finish 8-4, but their non-conference schedule is an FCS team and three G5 teams.

Virginia is a pivotal game

It's a bunch of message board banter, and fun for positive people to talk about. I never bought it either, and thought SMU was a tough spot for them

No different than the negative Nancies and naysayers crawling out from under their rocks to say this team stinks, Duzz sucks, and how this loss to SMU was demoralizing to the program.

Nothing has really changed. They lost a game where they played like sh!t.

If Eli doesn't pick it up early against UVA, they need to think about making a change. At least for that game. Gotta win this one.

A lot of people around here bought the hype. GameDay had us in the "20% chance" tier to make the playoff. Someone yesterday told me Pitt can never win the big one. I just laughed, because this is a good team but it's far from a team that should be mentioned in the same breath as the college football playoff. They didn't get to 7-0 and lose the big one; they're punching well above their weight class to be 7-1. People should be very satisfied with this season as a whole. With the talent we have, 4-4 would have been a more expected outcome. Yet we found a way to go 7-1. That's a huge success.
