The bloody weekend that was in the ACC

Better week for ACC so far:

Clemson with 2 nice, but not great wins over San Fran and Pedos

BC miraculously beat Mountain West darling Boise State. This was a shocker to me as I think BC is by far the worst team in the ACC

FSU blew out Western Carolina and continue to roll. I picked them near the bottom and although they haven't played anyone, might they be good? They usually suck in these November games.

Duke and UNC lost but whatever.

Sleepers Stanford and ND lost to GCU and Rutgers. I still like those teams though.
Mountain West not nearly the computer darling it was last year, that opens up some bids.

Also, for Pitt purposes, Capel pulled a Jamie this season and really scheduled the “cupcakes” well. Radford, Murray St (who is actually pretty good), Gardner Webb, Eastern KY…these teams are all winning games. We don’t really have the true bottom feeder 300+ teams this season.

Those Clemson wins are pretty good. Not quite LSU good, but not bad. They are in good shape.

Pretty clear this league has a top 4 of Duke UNC Pitt Clemson, and then I think Wake and LVille end up making it somehow.

ACC feels more likely to have 7 than 5, although 6 feels like the number (1 in Dayton)

OT: CFP Now Includes 3 ACC, 3 SEC

Clemson rejoins CFP field with a ranked S. Carolina rivalry game remaining to secure their spot.

SMU moves up to 9 and Miami sits at 6, meaning a close ACC Championship Game win my SMU makes it likely 3 ACC teams make the field.

At the other end of the P4 spectrum is the B12, with zero teams in the field and a real possibility of their champion ultimately being lower ranked than Boise St. (Mountain West Conference) and Tulane (AAC). The B12 Champ would be the 6th highest ranked conference champion in that scenario and not get an automatic bid.

Boise St. and Indiana (#10) need to keep winning or they’ll drop out.

Very few people had these scenarios on their scorecards.

Not sure three get in. If SMU loses in the championship game, they will get jumped over by Bama. Even Clemson is hanging on at this point.

Clemson is not in right now; they're the first team out. There are only four conferences represented in the top 11, so a team from either the Big 12 or AAC would get the nod ahead of Clemson. It would be Arizona State as of today; I'm just saying that may change. But Clemson needs help to get in... unless they beat SC so badly they leapfrog somebody, but I doubt that happens.

Big 12 in danger of not getting a CFP Bid

The Big 12 sucks. But in a way, it's kind of fun. Anybody can beat anybody. The last place team could play the first place team, and the spread might be a touchdown or less - perhaps much less.

Kind of makes me wish the Super League would form and the Pitts of the world could latch onto some secondary league with the Big 12, ACC leftovers, etc. I do, however, realize they'd get frozen out of most media markets and the money would be much less than it is now, thus resulting in a lesser product.

But as for this year, Tulane is way too freaking high. No way should a team with two losses against that schedule be sniffing #17. I could see them being #25 or something. Pretty wild to think the ACC could also get three teams in. For it to happen, I think SMU and Miami would both have to win convincingly this week and then play a close game next week, while Clemson would have to beat South Carolina. And they likely have to do it in a fashion impressive enough to drop Notre Dame/Texas/Tennesee out of the top 12 if any of them lose.

The Morning Pitt: 11/27/2024 - What happens without Dunn?

Pitt won't have Damian Dunn until early January, so how will the Panthers replace his offense and his defense? On today's Morning Pitt, we're talking about the top candidates to fill in for Dunn - who will get his minutes and his spot in the starting lineup and which players will be counted on to produce on both ends of the court?

Big 12 in danger of not getting a CFP Bid

New rankings:

16 ASU (@ Arizona)
17 Tulane (vs Memphis)
18 Iowa State (vs KSt)
19 BYU (vs Houston)
24 KSt (@ ISU)
25 Colorado (vs OK St)

Tulane plays 9-2 Memphis and then 9-1 Army so their SOS wont take a hit. If they win out and ASU and ISU lose this weekend, I dont think BYU can jump them by beating 4-7 Houston and then a 3 loss team. Perhaps KSt could since they beat Tulane.

Speaking of the Big 12? Anyone see that dirty hit on Shadeur Sanders? A Kansas LB made as clear and obvious of an attempt that you'd ever see to end the career of another player. Deliberately speared the knee of Sanders. Maybe the dirtiest hit you'd ever see.

Also Big 12. Crazy ending to BYU/ASU. ASU up 5 on around the 5 yard line of BYU. Instead of trying to score. They had their QB purposely lose yards to burn clock and 2nd & 3rd Down. Now its 4th and Goal from the 50 and the QB throws it out of bounds to end the game (they think). Crowd rushes field. But there's 1 second. BYU throws Hail Mary. Caught. But at the 2.

It's kind of odd (in a way) that the ACC has become so weak among the P4 conferences in football and basketball, and is now the top conference in Olympic sports (volleyball, soccer)

Basketball this year for the ACC has taken a huge, backward step when you look at the conference's record against their non-conference opponents

As a side note, was the re-hiring of Brown at UNC somewhat similar to our re-hiring of Johnny Majors? Expecting better than what was delivered? (albeit, Brown II was much more successful than Majors II)
The weak ACC currently has 3 teams in the CFP.
