UConn to the Big 12?

I hesitate to post this because the source is that Baylor Student/B12 propagandist and he's one of those B12 fake news people like Greg Swaim and The Dude. But if an actual news station feels this is newsworthy, I thought what the heck, post it here for discussion. I mean the Big 12 had added IUP, West Chester, and Millersville. Would it be THAT shocking if they added UConn? They'd take anyone and folks here are worrying we would get left out of an 80 team Big 12?

Lazinger's Lists - 2024 home opener against Kent State

With the obvious caveats that it was only Kent State, here are some (belated) thoughts on the game:
  • Holstein threw maybe 2 bad passes all game that was one of the more impressive first taste of college action I can remember. The touch especially stood out.
  • I think we will need to limit Reid to 10 carries each game to keep him healthy. I mean, that kid is really unreal. Super fast and a home run hitter. I agree with the consensus that we don't need him returning punts. Losing Hammond and the RB recruit to Cuse late in the cycle is going to test the depth here. It wouldn't surprise me if we get a Jordan Whitehead level athlete in the backfield a few times a game if we have any injuries.
  • With the exception of the Mump put return fumble, I thought the pass catchers played well, especially Kenny Johnson. I think El Barto is going to be happy he came back.
  • Defense really only gave up 10 points if you take away the Mump fumble and not even looking at the dropped TD catch that was ruled complete. I thought Louis, Biles, George, Keye, Battle and Matlack all showed enough that I feel good about them going forward.
  • Even though the D only got 2 turnovers, they were all over the place and most of the time missed interceptions because we had too many players in one spot.
  • It's early and it's one week but if we beat Cincy, we could be looking at a great start. Obviously it's going to be hard to tell if WVU is bad or PSU is good but that game looks more winnable now too.
  • 1-0...lets' get to 2-0 and get some momentum going! Great to be back.

Inside the numbers: Snaps, pressures, tackles and more from Pitt's defense vs. Kent State

Who played the most snaps for Pitt's defense on Saturday? And who made the most plays? Let's look at the numbers from Pro Football Focus.

Something chris breifly mentioned on wed

But I want to double back to is how ya we scored alot and ran a shit ton of plays

But that's prolly only the tip of the iceberg

We prolly only showed 20-30% of what we can do n I'd bet that's prolly high

We saw a TD called back where eli used his feet

We didn't see a ton of PA or screens

Just saw a few cool plays n then your basic what everyone else runs plays but just ran faster

And that's another reason I don't think this game will be as close as folks think I think we will light cincy up. I'm not saying Cincy won't score on us but I dont think they can out score us and that's even if our defense is ass this game

Also trick plays throw them in there too

I genuinely beleive what we saw Saturday will be about what we see almost every game give or take a TD less or more depending on how the defense plays

If I'm wrong I'll be the 1st to admit it but I know what my eyes see n "ItS jUSt kEnT St" don't mean ish to me cause I've seen PITT play crappy teams n struggle or at the very least score less

That's what your supposed to do to a lesser OP n how bell is so aggressive on play calling also give me more reason to beleive this will be a fun and hopefully great year

Holstein Rewatch Notes

I thought...like everyone that Holstein was very good last week. However upon rewatch I am even more impressed and excited. Even his bad plays were very fixable. His one INT was a good decision however he threw off his back foot and didn't get enough on it. That is a fixable situation that will come with experience. Actually he had 4-5 throws that were bad and every one of them came back to either throwing off his back foot or not setting his feet. They all seemed to be good decisions just bad mechanics, and that is to be expected for a Redshirt Freshman making his first start. His accuracy was good...once again for a RS Freshman....pretty impressive.

Bottom line is that if he continues to get coached up and puts that into play, the sky really is the limit for his abilities. I hope he continues to progress because if he does, we have a good QB again. Now I know it was 1 game against Kent St....However he looked good. Hopefully he continues to impress against better competition. This offense does a good job getting space for guys to at least make catches without guys all over them so that is good too!

PODCAST: Recapping Kent State and looking ahead to Cincinnati

Jim and I got together Wednesday night for this week's Panther-Lair Show to discuss the win over Kent State, this week's game at Cincinnati and a lot more with comments and questions from Pitt fans.

Sure was nice to have an accurate QB

last weekend.

We see examples all over college football, you are only as good as your QB. Hope our guy keeps that up. Not a believer yet, but went the the game Saturday, and was duly impressed. I will wait until after the Cincy game to say more other than on the sideline the kid looks like a leader as well. Had some Pickett in him for sure, which is the highest praise.

OT: Florida State's NIL Budget

"The team has struggled despite the Noles making a big investment in their defensive line this year with almost $2 million going to their starting front in what is an NIL team budget of around $12 million, a source briefed on FSU’s NIL strategy told The Athletic this week."

Donors can't be happy with FSU starting the season with losses to Georgia Tech and Boston College, two teams normally found at the bottom of the ACC standings.

Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News wrote an article today titled,

"Florida State's imperfect start has college football fans laughing from coast to coast"

In it he wrote,
"Florida State’s prior complaints about their conference partners and the league headquarters have led to suits and countersuits – but also a public relations battle in which the Seminoles have been about as successful as in their first two football games. The arrogance infesting not so much the athletic department, but rather those running the university as a whole, has led to them now posing a challenge to Notre Dame as this sport’s most unpopular team.

The national enmity for Notre Dame is of the sort accorded the Cowboys and Yankees: too much attention over too long a period of time eventually wears on fans of other teams. The Irish have built toward their status over the course of nearly a century. Florida State got this done in nine months. That’s an achievement, don’t you think?"

Yes, and it is an expensive achievement! 🤣
