Femi Odukale hits milestone

Femi Odukale, who is somehow still playing college basketball despite enrolling here as a nearly 20 year old freshman a half decade ago, just scored his 1000th career point. He is now playing for Minnesota, by way of Seton Hall and New Mexico State. 480 of those points were scored as a Pitt Panther!

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....Ahh...............Stillers

We wonder why dem Stillers 'n at have a hold on this region?? Today is why. Dem Stillers n' at are 8-2. I am really not blasting Pitt because moving from 3-9 to say 8-4 is great. But dem Stillers always take it in another level.

Love them hate them but my god this franchise is impressive.

Three takeaways from Pitt's win last night:

- Many points for many players

The hype for Pitt VB…

…is real. I’ve paid attention for the last five or six years, really starting to get into it last year. Attended a few matches, including the reverse sweep versus Louisville at the Pete. Went to all the NCAA tournament games at the field house, where the energy was off the charts. I decided to get season tickets this year for me and my son. I always get there early and park right by the baseball stadium, so it’s an easy walk in between Trees Hall and the OC lot to the field house. Doors always open one hour before match time, and people start lining up maybe two hours before match time. Yesterday was unreal. Doors scheduled to open at noon for a 1 PM match. Same time is kickoff for Steelers/Ravens in a football crazy town. I parked in my usual spot around 10:30AM. People were starting to already walk over. I decided to go over at 11:45, even though I had reserved seats. At that point, the line stretched to the end of the field house parking lot. By the time the doors opened, the line was down the hill towards the Pete . People get there early, because they have general admission seating, and want to get the best seats. Usually by 45 minutes prior to match start, general admission is filled. They’ve started a string of sellouts at the field house. The vast majority of people stay after the match to watch the girls celebrate with the band. People hang out, especially ones with kids, afterwards to wait for the girls to come out of the locker room so they can get autographs. Friday night after the Florida State match there may have been 100–200 people waiting afterwards. When Cat Flood came out, there was this huge scream from all the kids there. Honest to God, you would’ve thought a rockstar came out. That’s what these ladies have become. The senior day program was fantastic. The video tributes were first class, the crowd was enthusiastic and stuck around after the match to watch. Pitt volleyball is a phenomenon, and the timing is perfect for it. If they win a national championship, there’s a chance they could sell out the entire season next year.

Underneath it all

Underneath all the things that were frustrating about Pitt's game today - and there were plenty of them - there was one thing I kept coming back to as I drove home and did the post-game show:

This team, maybe for the first time, since the North Carolina game, showed how good it can play. It wasn't perfect; not even close. Too many penalties, too many drops, too many mistakes. But when it came down to it, there were a whole bunch of points throughout the game on both sides of the ball where they looked like the team that built a 7-0 record.

The defense has been mostly good all season, so it wasn't a huge surprise that they had a strong day. Although I would be remiss to not point out how they held Phil Mafah - he of the nearly 1,000 yards and 6.1 yards per carry this season - to 17 yards on 17 carries. And the fact that they allowed 102 yards in the entire second half; granted, 75 of those 102 came on the game-winning drive, which can't be ignored. But even then, accounting for those 75 yards means Clemson gained 27 yards for the first 28+ minutes of the half.

But, like I said, the defense has been mostly good all season. The offense, on the other hand - well, I think more than a few Pitt fans have been wondering if the offense would ever be good again this season. The North Carolina game was the offense's last good game, and with every passing week - Cal, Syracuse, SMU, Virginia - those good games felt further and further away.

And in the first half today, it didn't look so hot. But the second half performance was pretty solid:

264 yards, 5.2 yards per play, 5/11 third down (45%) and three scoring drives.

Now, those three scoring drives were one touchdown and two field goals; obviously, they need to convert more of those field goals into touchdowns, and if they had, the outcome of this game would have been more positive for the home team. But with an offense that has been looking for anything positive in the last month or so, moving the ball like they did was pretty encouraging.

What stood out to me was that the offense looked like it had earlier in the season. Konata Mumpfield was finding holes in the zone and caught 7 passes for 68 yards. Desmond Reid was turning short passes into long gains; he had 108 yards on 10 receptions (plus 68 yards on 14 carries for 176 yards of offense). Kenny Johnson made a huge catch for a 27-yard gain. Gavin Bartholomew made a great touchdown play.

That touchdown was a great example: great route, great play call, great throw, great catch.

It was the kind of play that - I don't know, maybe some of us on the outside wondered if this offense could still make, at least in its 2024 incarnation.

Now, maybe the improvement was due to the change at quarterback. That's possible. Eli Holstein hasn't been the same in the last few games. Nate Yarnell wasn't perfect today, but he made some pretty good throws and showed some real heart to get knocked around as much as he did - 8 sacks and a whole bunch of other times he took a shot. Whatever it was, I just can't get past the thought that the offense finally looked like itself for the first time in a month or so.

So while we're not handing out moral victories, I think it's pretty encouraging for the direction of things.

The Morning Pitt: 11/19/2024 - The QBs, the penalties, the linebackers, the OL and more

We're covering a lot of ground on today's Morning Pitt, from the latest on the quarterbacks to another season-ending injury and Pitt's offensive line might look like on Saturday.

You noticed OSU/PITT......

.....is on the peacock? WTH First there was the deuce, then the Ocho, now there's the cock????

Man thats one more subscription i have to buy and then cancel. I just did that with Max to watch the Penguin. (it was amazing and we need a thread on it)

I hope we don't see more OOC stuff show up on channels like this moving forward. I had enough trouble finding that Dawson's Creek/Smallville channel that carries ACC games now.

Really excited to kick some Tiny 10 booty that game. Will be great for our resume.

OT: Shuttered Pittsburgh area restaurants that you miss??

I am sure most of us will focus on the iconic ones but what are some that you miss??

My first job out of school was in Sharpsburg, and I really miss Montemurros and Salpietros. Especially Montemurro's, I remember as a kid if we were going there I knew it was going to be good.

And for a chain, yeah I miss Chi Chi's. My first exposure to Tex Mex type of food.
