Is this the most unlikely NBA player ever?

Pat Spencer did not play college basketball as an undergrad at Loyola (MD). He was an elite lacrosse player and won the lacrosse version of the Heisman. Back then, they had that "Greg Paulus Rule" where you can get a 5th year of eligibility if you graduate, transfer, and play a different sport. So he used that to play basketball for a year at Northwestern. You may remember we played them in that Fort Myers Tournament in Capel Year 2. Anyway, after bouncing around in the G-league, he has played games for Golden State last season and this season. Not many. But its a very unlikely story.

Glass half full or glass half empty?

Pitt goes from 3-9 in 2023 to 7-5 in 2024. 4 more wins; 4 fewer losses. Picked 13th in ACC pre-season and will finish 10th. Predicted to win 5.5 games by the sports books before the season and won 7

So, is our Pitt Football "glass" half full, or half empty?

I'm not going to sugar coat this season. We could've won or lost at least 3 more games than we did, but we didn't. After going 7-0 to start and to then finish 0-5 is a major disappointment, not just for we fans but the players and coaches, too. The poor finish (regardless of the injuries) was an equal combination of the failure by coaches and players. "Next man up" didn't produce, and that's on the coaches for not having a ready-to-play second string; dropped passes, missed assignments, false starts, holding penalties, et al, is on the players

I've read scores of posts and replies here as to what's wrong. There is a litany of reasons. But from this "armchair quarterback" the most egregious reason for Pitt's lack of success lies in the trenches. OL and DL were the top two of Pitt's weakest positions, IMO. Bell's offense can't run efficiently without a line that can block. And our cover 0 pass coverage is ineffective if the opposing QB isn't feeling pressure

So, Moe, how do you feel about the Pitt Football "glass"?? Right now, I'd say "we need a different glass..."

Who was Pitt's MVP yesterday?

Simple question. Tough answer:

Who was Pitt's MVP in the win at Ohio State?

Jaland Lowe - game-high 28 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists (including the game-winner), 13 fouls drawn

Ishmael Leggett - 21 points and 10 rebounds; fouled out but had 8 points, 2 assists, 1 defensive rebound and 1 steal during the 15-0 run that got Pitt back in the game

Papa Amadou Kante - 12 points, 4 offensive rebounds, the other huge contributor during the 15-0 run; Jeff Capel called him "the guy that changed the game"

Zack Austin - 16 points, hit the game-winner and shot 5-of-8 from three

What's your call?

It’s time to focus basketball with NIL

Let’s get our heads out of our asses here. If we can be 7-5 forever at football, whatever, but basketball we legit can be a national player.

Our big donors need to make the investment into basketball and stop being deluded into thinking we can ever compete at football, and stop playing games with only giving money for their pet projects they want to come here.

Conference Championships Mostly Suck

Clemson vs SMU

I'm so sick of Clemson. Was really looking forward to seeing some new blood in Miami vs SMU. Cade Klubnik is a drunken cowboy's stank rodeo butthole.

Arizona State vs Iowa State

No thanks. All these Big 12 teams suck. But I'd have much rather watched Colorado just for the entertainment value.

Texas vs Georgia

We've already seen it, and I really don't like watching high-end SEC teams play each other because they're all so out of sight and mind that I typically couldn't care any less who wins.

Penn State vs Oregon

Okay, this actually intrigues me. It's not Ohio State and/or Michigan again, and it gives us a little rooting interest in hoping Penn State loses.

Although I almost wonder if it would benefit Pitt if Penn State starts winning more. Our local recruiting couldn't be any worse right now. Maybe if they win more and become more nationally appealing we'd at least be able to keep *some* locals home.

imagine being an A&M fan/booster

you've paid top dollar for everything. you bring in countless coaches and pay them a boatload. you got the #1 recruiting class of all time a few years ago.

ane yet, you almost never finish better than 8-4.

and this isn't just recent history. this is their life for around 50 years at least.

we bitch about pitt but we probably have 1/3 of the resources they do. and they're barely better than us.

Unpopular Opinion

Among all those setting their hair on fire and the wailing and gnashing of teeth, I'm going to state my thoughts, which will no doubt get the kids all riled up. I'm 72, been watching Pitt football since 1969. They gave a good account of themselves this year. They showed that when healthy, they are pretty good. Good young QB, but two concussions and a leg injury will slow anyone down. Great backup, but he was pretty beat up, too. Walk on as the third QB. Great running back in Reid, but he was torn up, true freshman in the last game. Down to about the 4th string OL. In spite, still 7-5 and going bowling. I'm one who sees the glass half full, and that is what I see now. Flame away.

Thoughts on the season and offseason

  1. Would part ways with Bates. Turn it over to Sanders.
  2. Use that extra position coach for a run game coordinator
  3. Move on from Darveau. Prob Laster too.
  4. 4 portal OL need to be brought in. 1 QB (depending on Yarnell), a RB2, 2 WRs, DE, and a S.
  5. Need to keep Eli, Des ,and Kenny obviously along with the LBers and FitzSimmons
  6. Disappointed in Cruce Brookins and really the safety play in general all year
  7. Thought Gandy was great early on but took a step back in the second half of the season
  8. Once Fitzsimmons came back the front 7 was a lot better especially in the run game.
  9. Need to get a MLB (hopefully Bass?) who is better in pass coverage
  10. Green needs to come up with some funds for NIL
  11. The injuries suck. I don’t think this team goes 11-1 or anything but if even just 1 OL injury instead of 3. Or just Eli. I think they win 9 and there’s buzz going into next season.
  12. Officiating. Needs to be looked at. There were some brutal calls that turned games and potential outcomes.
  13. I think Tyreek Robinson might end up being a really good player. Liked his wiggle on kickoff returns.
  14. Get Eli in the film room and break down some zone defenses
  15. Would put out a feeler to Tim Cramsey and see if he’ll move now.
