The Backyard Brawl is here, and in this week's 3-2-1 Column we're thinking about Pitt-West Virginia, Heather Lyke's firing, the offense and a lot more.

Five articles/videos/etc from this week to get you ready for the Brawl

We had a lot of content this week previewing today's Backyard Brawl. Here are five things I think you should check out this morning to get ready for the game.

- We've confirmed nearly 30 recruits who plan to attend the game today, including a bunch of top local guys. Here's the rundown.

- Kade Bell spoke to the media this week about Eli Holstein, the progress of Pitt's offense and more.

- Who has been getting the targets in Pitt's offense? What happens to Holstein when teams blitz? Check out a dive into the numbers.

- In addition to the numbers, we've got film. Here's a breakdown of how Pitt's offense turned it around at Cincinnati.

Recruiting Article Bell, Narduzzi and city of PGH made "a great opportunity" for Alabama QB transfer Holstein

I caught up with Eli Holstein and his father to talk about why the Alabama QB is transferring to Pitt.

Granddaughter’s 1st Pitt VB match

Last fall my now 14 year-old granddaughter started playing volleyball, first on her school team and then on a club team. As a responsible grandparent I insured she became a big Pitt VB fan and promised her a trip to a Pitt match if she kept playing. She’s become passionate about the sport and we’ll be coming to Oakland on Sunday, 9/22 for the Marquette match. Given it’s my first VB match as well, IIwould appreciate some Iguidance on a few questions:
1) What is the best parking strategy? The ticket office guy said park on Champions Ave? Park on lower campus and walk to Fitz?
2). The doors open at noon but when should we be there to be part of the first general admission wave to get good seats?
3) Is there an opportunity after the match to interact with any of the players? (Photos/autographs))
Thanks in advance for your input.
Great win last night.

Duzz’s absence from the search committee

Haven’t seen a post about this, but I found it curious that HCPN is not on the search committee. Like that Capel and Donald are on it. Was he asked and declined or was he not asked? I think the answer to that question in lieu of his statement on Lyke’s firing would speak volumes of the relationship he has with the new chancellor. Not saying his job is threatened given his contract and the financial problems the department appears to have. The optics don’t look good.

Chancellor announces search committee for new AD

Press release:

As we embark on a new era in intercollegiate athletics, I am happy to share with the Pitt community how we are moving forward in our search for the next director of athletics at the University of Pittsburgh. We are seeking a transformational leader to partner with University leadership in efforts to further elevate Pitt’s world-class student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans and donors.

We are honored that some outstanding members of our Pitt community have agreed to support the search as members of the advisory committee.

• Pat Bostick (A&S ’10, CGS ’11, LAW ’21), senior associate athletic director, major gifts; a three-year football letterman at Pitt
• Jeff Capel, head men’s basketball coach
• Aaron Donald (A&S ’20), unanimous Pitt Football All-American, three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and ten-time Pro Bowl selection
• Dwayne Pinkney (GSPIA ’87), executive senior vice chancellor for administration and finance and chief financial officer
• Donna Sanft (EDUC ’74, ’89G), former Pitt executive associate athletic director, head gymnastics coach and associate dean of students
• Peter Varischetti (CGS ’92); member of the Pitt Board of Trustees; president of Varischetti Holdings, LP, which owns a minority interest in the Pittsburgh Steelers; and former Pitt Football letterman
• Sheila Vélez Martínez, Pitt faculty athletics representative, University of Pittsburgh School of Law

The committee and I will be aided in our work by one of the world’s leading sports executive search firms, TurnkeyZRG. In the last 36 months, TurnkeyZRG has successfully placed the president of the NCAA; the commissioners of the Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC; as well as dozens of athletic directors and head coaches across the landscape of college sports.

We look forward to an outstanding search process, and I am confident that we will identify, recruit and secure a tremendous athletic director.

Hail to Pitt!

Chancellor Joan Gabel
