When your favorite college basketball team was predicted to finish 14th but now is 1 win away from an awesome Sweet 16, I must say it has affected my sleep.
But that's okay, I'm tired but wide awake at the same time if that makes any sense!!
Happy Saint Patty's day to everyone first off .
I am slow cooking a corned beef roast for the first time this year . Got the rub , potatoes , carrots , onion , and 2 bottles of guiness . Any other suggestions to go with this already awesome smelling concoction ?
Really not sure how Iowa State went 9-9 in the Big 12 this year. With the wins that they had. I had a feeling it would be another ugly close one, and wow. It wasn't even like Iowa State just had an off night shooting it or something. They looked completely scared and timid. I think I owe the ACC an apology. Not because it was good. But we can see that these other conferences were severely overrated.
I don't think Pitt played well at all. Of course it was ugly and in the mud. That is part of it. But you have to feel really good when you win by 18 with the following;
- Blake couldn't make a shot
- Nelly had a rough stretch
- Jamarius did not play well
- Greg did very little
- Federiko is not healthy at all and had no impact
All of that and you win by 18. Each one of these elimination games is completely different and now they get 48 hours to breathe. I don't think you will see Federiko improve much by Sunday. Probably have to win and sneak another week for him. At this point, it is what it is.
Nelly deserves credit. Thought he was really bad in the first half, but then he came back and made a couple big shots. He has a tendency to do that. Similar to how Levance was. Didn't matter what he did for 35 minutes, you can count on him in crunch time for the most part. This kind of leadership and experience wins at the guard position. It is not a coincidence.
I've noticed each of these tournament teams are very experienced. Just as experienced or more so than Pitt. Just the COVID era I guess, but these teams have a ton of seniors.
Blake was really bad today and he tends to not have two bad ones in a row. That will be critical, as this team is going to need him to go off a bit again Sunday. Xavier is not as good defensively as these last two teams, but they are much better offensively. It is going to be a much different game. I'm concerned with Jamarius right now. He has to sit with ice until Sunday but also play much better. To beat this Xavier team, they will need to be much better. The good news is that the style and matchup should allow for more of a traditional offensive game.
No sense in nitpicking this one anymore. It is a one game survive and advance setting. Nothing matters other than who is circled at the end of it. These games can take on a life of their own and be its own adventure. That is the beauty in it. It is time to play with house money and clean it up. No flops, charges, emotional decisions, etc. This team is capable of beating Xavier if they are all together and locked in. It is so fun to watch this team figure it out. It just feels like it shouldn't end yet. Down to 40 minutes again on Sunday.
Obviously Jeff Capel wants to win this game badly for many reasons - most of all which is to continue this run and make a sweet 16.
But I have to feel it would make it a little but sweeter beating Sean Miller to do it. It's not a secret how many people wanted Capel gone after last season and how a large group of people wanted Sean Miller. He had to have heard at least a little bit of that right? It's not like that was only being discussed here on Pantherlair.
I could be way off and maybe he hadn't heard anything like that, but I would have to think he had and I bet he would love nothing more than beat him on the way to a sweet 16.
Pitt is still in the tourney. Purdue, Duke, Kansas, .... they're not even in it anymore. But we are.
We have more depth than Xavier. Our offense should be better than it has been. But I don't want us to get enamored with just offense.
We need a little muck, grit, some jam, be the tougher team today. Be more physical. Show more heart on defense than them. Want it more.
Coming off two teams that handcheck and bump and push constantly to this should be great for Burton. Let's put pressure on one of their guards to have to guard hard. Let's get someone in Foul Trouble.
I'm too excited. I'm excited for everyone on this board.
This place was often a miserable cesspool the last few years.
But a shining Light has arrived!
I'm happy for everyone on this board. A bunch of loveable psycho fans.
Let's win this shit!
So I said Friday night that if the game tip was noonish I would make the drive. Got my ticket and I’m in Wytheville tonight. Any parking recommendations for the coliseum tomorrow? I’m looking forward to my first in person tournament game.
I know Xavier is the opposite of what we have played the past two games and I think that might be good.
Pitt really hasn't shot well since the 1st half of the Mississippi St game, in my mind they are due. I think Hinson goes off some ans Burton plays well.
Xavier doesn't defend great and I think we are going to take advantage of that. Xavier will certainly score but so will we.
I do think, while the offenses we played aren't great our D has been better than it was and might be finding a little bit of a groove.
Xavier will out rebound us, but I don't think by enough that it costs us the game.
So with all that said...I think Pitt wins....78-72....and they play Texas in the sweet 16 for the 1st time since 2009!
We should know if Pitt is heading to the Sweet 16 or not for a matchup with Texas or for a matchup with an old football turned new basketball rival Penn State. I’m already pumped and nervous as hell at the same time because once you get into that round of 16 the road gets narrower and you can really start to dream about what could be if you win the next game or two.
I made a $2 bet to win $300. What the hell, why not?
Anyway... today's games:
Furman +5.5 vs SDSU
- SDSU's games are low scoring and often close. I like Furman to cover.
Duke -3.5 vs Tennessee
- Tennessee's offense is hot garbage since they lost their PG 10 days ago. And Duke's defense has been incredible. Duke is going to win by something like 61-50.
Arkansas +4.5 vs Kansas
- Arkansas is the right kind of team to beat Kansas. I like them to possibly win today.
Missouri -6.5 vs Princeton
- Princeton is a great story, but Missouri is the best team that nobody is talking about. They score, and score in bunches.
Auburn +5.5 vs Houston
-Without their star guard Sasser... Houston is in trouble.
Penn State +5.5 vs Texas
-I think Texas wins, but I think PSU covers.
UCLA -7.5 vs Northwestern
- UCLA looks like they've kicked it up a notch and Cronin has them playing well. I think NW will get exposed.
Alabama -8.5 vs Maryland
- As much as I want them to lose, I don't think Alabama will have much of a problem with Maryland. I see a 15-point win.
