Recruiting Article DE transfer ends up close to home at Pitt

Blaine Spires went a long way to end up close to home.

The Youngstown native started his college career at Bowling Green, two and a half hours away. After four years with the Falcons, he entered the transfer portal and landed even further away - this time it was 26 hours, as Spires ended up at Utah State.

In 12 games in 2023, he recorded five sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss, and he entered 2024 expected to be the Aggies’ top pass-rusher. But his senior season was cut short by injury, and he entered the transfer portal one more time.

On Friday, he arrived at Pitt for a visit, and by the time he left on Saturday morning, Spires had made the decision to be a Panther.

Recruiting Update Noah Jennings visit plans

Noah Jennings, a 6-1 185-pound WR transfer, tells me he is visiting Pitt this weekend. He also has planned visits to Cincinnati, ECU, and Washington State.

Jennings caught 32 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns in 8 games this season. As a freshman, he posted 26 for 410 and a score.

Recruiting Update FSU WR transfer expected to visit this weekend

I'm hearing Florida State WR transfer Deuce Spann is expected to visit Pitt this weekend.

Spann appeared in just four games this season and played 12 snaps on offense due to injury. In the previous two seasons, he played in 23 games, caught nine passes for 87 yards, rushed 10 times for 46 yards, and also threw two passes for 24 yards in addition to 348 yards on 13 kick returns - 26.8 yards per return - including a 99-yard touchdown against Duke in 2023.

Spann started his career at Illinois, where he signed with the class of 2020 as a three-star quarterback recruit (Pitt actually recruited him back then). He moved to receiver in 2021 and played 61 snaps on offense that season, catching five passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

The big appeal with Spann is his size; he's 6'4" and 208 pounds, which is bigger than any of Pitt's current scholarship receivers.

Ish Ugh

2 for 15 from the field, including 0 for 4 from 3, 0 for 1 at the line. Ugly stats for a guy who has been damned steady for us.

Jaland was slightly better, 3 for 12 and 2 for 4 from 3.

Not going to win many big games when your starting guards are 5 for 27 from the field.

Gotta have short memories and come back strong against the tar heels.
