2019 Chester Makoi Is @ Pitt on an Unofficial today

PSN tweeted he is a possible 2018 player. Anyone know where he stands?

Edit : "He was committed to Longwood before the coaching change. He’s a reclass to 2019 so I’m assuming Pittsburgh is trying to get him to come in for the 2018 class. He is a kid that would probably be able to get things done in the classroom to get in the Class of 2018,”

We definitely need post help, but I'm not keen on reaching now and committing for 4 years given how well Capel has done so far. As the old saying goes, better a 4 star in the bush than a 2 star in the hand (if you're going to lose double digit conference games anyway . The article from psn says he's a likely redshirt so he wouldn't help. Immediately anyway. If we see potential sure let's do it, looks like he grew up in Alaska so he might be under the radar.

The kid is raw but I can see why he’d be someone we’d have in for a visit. Has potential to either blow up or just remain extraordinary average

Can’t really judge his back to the basket game very much from the video.... he’s playing against teams that look like the Jewish church league I played in as a kid
Agreed. Very, very meh. Looks similar to Peace's video, but without his frame. However, in Capel We Trust.

Pitt will never have 13 5 stars.

I’m ok with this

Agree with this as well. I will trust Capel's judgement and if he thinks this kid can be developed then I am fine with it.

I was just hoping they would find a grad transfer or someone who could help out more immediately next year which this kid clearly is not.

Do like he is a lefty..

Here's some old comments by his coach.

Coach Frank says: Chester is an impressive player with excellent athleticism, sound fundamentals and versatility and a high basketball IQ. He’s a long 6’9 with a 7’3 wingspan but also is quick, runs the floor exceptionally well and is very agile. He has great hands, a nice shooting stroke with three point range and he demonstrated the ability to hit the jumper as a trailer on a catch and shoot, on a one dribble pull-up and spotting up in the corner. Chester also impressed with his ability to handle the basketball and create his own shot and get to the rim. He can rebound and push the ball up the floor capably and finish at the rim! He had an impressive sequence where he caught the ball shot ready in the corner, made a nice swing move right to move the defender, then ripped it left and got to the rim on one dribble and drew the foul from a help defender! He stays on balance when attacking the rim. Chester is an impact defender and shot blocking presence. He defends well and contains the dribble against forwards out on the perimeter and also is an imposing paint presence who contests shots and maintains good positioning. He knows how to block shots to try to keep the ball in play. Chester rebounds very well on both ends and rebounds the ball high. He is an excellent repeat jumper and plays with a high motor and enthusiasm. Atlanta, GA born and raised, Chester moved to Anchorage Alaska where he was an honor student and played for Anchorage Christian before making the move to Williamsburg Christian in Williamsburg VA. There is no question but that Chester Makoi is a Division I talent, most likely a stretch four type but possibly one who could play either wing at the next level.

I basically agree with everything you posted. I too want a grad transfer BIG for 2018. On the other hand if, as you stated, Capel....thinks this kid can be developed," then I too
am ok with his judgement. My sense is he's better than Iggy, and Capel may see him as a backup even as soon as 2018. If that's the case, then it would leave us with three
schollies for next year. I'm not too concerned with that though, because a few might be
let go (or leave on their own) after this season. We aren't done with 2018 yet.

Thinking that anyone on this board can judge talent better than a guy whose recruited the best players in the country for yrs is deluding themselves . If JC thinks a guy can help that’s good enough for me . Plus you have your priority targets and you need quality guys to fall back on when you miss .

When you're that long and athletic, your recruiting can easily blow up in a year. At face value, I'm not thrilled with the thought of going after 2 stars, but if you think you have a hidden gem, this is probably the year to take a chance. There's also something to be said for keeping the scholarship open, but I'm just going to trust Capel on this one.

Agreed - the bigger guy makes some sense IF you can get him to reclassify for 2018. You have to figure that at least 2 of the 3 b/w Peace, George and Kene will be gone one way or the other after next year.

If he's an unofficial visitor for 2019 it still can't hurt to see him live and have him engaged as a "B" type recruit should all these big fish Capel is chasing say no.

The guard, well, that I simply don't get. Unless they are simply teammates and buddies who want to split the cost of a road trip together?

Capel must have faith in brown and peace (gulp) if he isn't going to bring in a legit grad transfer big.
I’m thinking while winning next yr would be nice he’s thinking beyond that . Talent with upside to me is way more preferable than adding a grad transfer that might translate into one or two more wins next season .

Maybe the guard would be another preferred walk on? He definitely seems like a huge reach for a scholarship.

What is Longwood? Though it was an arboretum...yeah.

Longwood in VA.

Also...again...list the grad transfer bigs that make a difference for 1 year.

Anyone from Alaska is going to be under the radar until they can play in the lower 48.

My only question is why they don't feed kids in Alaska?

More on Mareng Gatkuoth.

We Got Nextt Recruiting Founder Demietrius Preston is the foremost source for high school and AAU sports in Alaska. He has this to say about Mareng Gatkuoth: Simply put, Mareng can be as good as he wants to be! Now that’s not an indictment on him or his work ethic, but the talent is most certainly there and has been for some time now. The 6’5 guard out of Alaska (Sudanese decent) has a smooth game accentuated by an advanced feel and superb ball handling skills. These traits along with his ability to score the basketball and make excellent reads out of the pick and roll allow him to play both guard spots. His jumper can be a little streaky at times but when the shots are falling, Mareng can score from anywhere from midrange out to 25 feet. Defensively Mareng can be a handful at times due to his excellent length (6’9+ wingspan). He plays the passing lanes well. Overall he needs to improve his ability to keep smaller, quicker guards in front and just provide more effort. As the saying goes, “he has all the tools”. Needs to add some more weight to his frame but otherwise passes the eye test to the “T”, especially as a 2019. Whenever he does indeed fill out, it will only help his efforts.

There have been several players recently that have departed Alaska and seen their games and recruiting stock surge as a result, Mareng is no different. He is a soft spoken kid who has yet to scratch the surface of how good he could become. I fully expect him to flourish in Virginia, ultimately becoming a mid to high major recruit before all is said and done.

Player he reminds me of from Alaska: Devonaire Doutrive (Birmingham HS (CA)/Cal Supreme EYBL. – Demtrieus Preston, @Wegotnextt on twitter. Wegotnextt.com

I saw Talib Zanna play in H.S. This kid looks similar to me at this point in time based on his U-Tube limited sample.

Not even close.

Your opinion, not mine. Did you actually see him play a HS game? As a HS senior Zanna had little beyond athleticism and height going for him when I watched him play. He took several years to fully develop at Pitt.

Admittedly I have only Makoi's brief u-tube to go by so maybe I am over rating Makoi in my mind. But he does remind me physically of Zanna as a HS senior.
