The prevailing wisdom is that Capel was going to land a very good 2022 class. If so, is it concerning that he keeps offering new players for 2022?

yes. Although maybe he's putting his eggs in as many baskets as possible.

I dont know if that's the prevailing wisdom.
But I've heard he really needs to have a good 22 class.

What is his buyout after this year ? Can we give him to Duke and not make them pay us a dime after this year, since he has to be their choice, that's what the board said for years, or certain homers, lol.....

Here we go...

Cue the Mark Schmidt debate.

I’ve heard several posters “in the know” say 2022 was going to be a good class for Capel FWIW. But with no commits and continued new offers I’m starting to question that optimism.

How many can we add without running someone off -two?
At least 2 and possibly up to 5 of the kids on the current roster will not finish their careers at Panthers. Should be recruiting like you have 5 open spots every single year. It’s the new normal.

Schools everywhere are losing guys that played 30 plus mpg and average in double figures. So whoever you want to point to (Jeffress, Hugley, Femi) as surely would never leave their situation....

Yea, nobody is going to ever recruit JUST the open spots anymore. Pitt will DEFINITELY have multiple players transfer. You have to expect that.

Capel, desperately needs a very good class SIGNED in November. He probably doesnt last past 2023 if he doesn't

This doesn’t make sense. If you’re saying that Capel isn’t going to get fired after the 2021-22 season (not lasting past 2023) why does it matter if the 2022 class is signed in November versus April if they’re good prospects?

Because he’s under the impression the November signing period means something. It doesn’t. Most coaches wanna do away with it and just have a late one since kids will continue to be recruited and can get out of their LOI’s anyways.

He isn't going to have a good class if he doesn't have one signed in November. You know this. 80% sign in November and not many of those kids get out of those LOIs

Because we are going to be bad in 2021-22 and probably also bad in 2022-23. However, if he has a very good freshman class for the 22-23 team, perhaps that team makes the NIT or even NCAAT.....or if not, there would be the idea that his freshmen have so much promise, we need them (and him) to stay to make the NCAAT

Kids signed in November this year because there was no recruiting and everyone was getting a year back. So there was no guarantee on open spots. It was a unique year where kids weren’t seen in the summer, weren’t gonna be seen all fall or winter and advisors made sure to lock that up early.

Last year was a unique situation. It will not be that way this year. Every parent I’ve talked to wants to wait as long as possible because they haven’t been seen in person in 16 months and want to attract as many offers as possible.

I will not debate you on this because there isn’t one. I’m right on how prospects will commit this year. No point in response from you.

This is an important recruiting cycle for Coach Capel for job security imo. While I do appreciate him swinging for the fences he needs to have a solid season and recruiting class to last past this year.

I tend to agree. A winning season overall with not less than 7 or 8 regular season ACC W's plus a recruit class that makes it appear an upward trend is underway are needed or the post-Covid Pete will remain mostly empty and the AD will be under pressure to look for a replacement coach.

That’s pretty ambitious. While I disagree with @Sean Miller Fan i agree with his premise. We’re staring down the barrel of a 3-5 win ACC season unless something drastic happens and there won’t be much to sell is why he keeps beating that dead horse.

Every year that goes by is further away from capel being able to use the Duke connection for landing recruits. All he has in the meantime is mediocre results.

Why would anyone care he coached at Duke 4 years ago? His job is to sell Pitt and the future of Pitt. Do you think Tommy Lloyd is talking about his Gonzaga success at Arizona or what he envisions for Arizona basketball?

Well if you read what many of the recruits say when asked about considering Pitt and playing for capel they mention his experience at Duke. So it may not be relevant to us, but it has been relevant to the recruits.

OK. Lets make a deal. What percentage of Top 150 signed in November end up at that school if there isnt a HC change? I say 80%. What do you say?

Capel isnt going to have a really good class if he doesnt have one signed in November. Its not that difficult of a concept

I don’t think he’ll have that great of a class either way. So that’s a moot point.

and it will be way less than 80 percent. You’re off. As always. Done with this line of “argument”. You’re flat out wrong.

What percentage of signed kids in November are going to get out of their LOI without a coaching change? 40%? 50%? You're way off base.

I do agree he isnt going to have a good class though. Probably like:

141
197
245
255

Hoping for the best. The 3-5 ACC win prediction assumes we will be relatively weaker vs the rest of the ACC than we were last season when we won 6 vs 10 losses

No. It's not concerning. And if he wasn't offering more prospects I'm sure we'd have folks complaining that he wasn't working hard enough.

I see you’ve conveniently changed your argument.

I would think we would have a pretty good handle on both who we want and who we think we can get.

Should one use the “official” visits to cement who we think we can get or use them to try to convince players we are not so sure of?

Do you risk not getting likely recruits if you don’t provide them the perks of the official visits?

Do you give those you want and think you can get both an unofficial and reserve an official for?

Maybe risk 3 or 4 officials on potential home runs?

Right now we have reported officials for: Mintz, Bachelor, Shifino and Barlow

Unofficials for: Jones, Tubek, Beya, Winborne, Lindsey, Moore and E.James

Does anyone know if those 11 players would include all our expected class or are there others outside this list we should expect?

Could be wrong, but I don’t think Batchelor’s visit is an official. Same with Barlow, though I could be wrong there.

edit: I see Batchelor as an unofficial and Barlow as an official.
