A lot more NC for ACC Tournaments

Weird to have 4 in a row in NC. And Greensboro actually sucks as a basketball town. The place is empty if Duke or UNC isnt playing. I was there for the Pitt/Xavier and Kentucky/KSt doubleheader and there were 5000 empty seats which would have been more if Big Blue Nation wasnt there. PPG sells out the NCAAT
Having the tournament in Greensboro is akin to having it in like Altoona. If you are hell bent on North Carolina, well Charlotte and Raleigh would be fine. But Greensboro? Imagine these Big East big ticket boosters used to going to Manhattan and then worrying about scoring 7:30PM reservations at Shoneys.

Altoona is a real good comparison to Greensboro. Only the ACC would be this stupid. If Greensboro wants it so bad, the place better be absolutely packed out for a doubleheader of BC vs Clemson and Pitt vs VT because its such an unbelievably great basketball town (its not). We can get 5000 people for that doubleheader in Brooklyn, Atlanta, DC, Miami, hell even Chicago.

Imagine the fine folks from Stanford and Berkeley would enjoy the amenities offered by Greensboro.

😂. If Altoona had a 20,000 seat arena, and had 4 charter members, including the 2 marquee national programs within a 90 minute drive, it would be a good comparison. Since that isn't the case, the Altoona comparison makes no sense.

If the tickets are sold, who cares how many people actually show up to watch BC/Clemson or Pitt/VT? Why does that matter?

It's matriculating to Charlotte, to make travel more convenient to the outsiders. But to ever hold it outside of North Carolina is just stupid. The tournament exists to make money, not to make outsiders happy.

The other aspect, too, is that the ACC is going to be asking its Atlantic seaboard schools to start flying out to Dallas and the Bay Area more than it was previously. That’s balanced out somewhat by having a conference tournament where close to 50% of the league’s members (the four Carolina schools, plus Clemson, VT, and maybe even UVA and GT) are within a reasonable bus trip to the tournament venue in Charlotte, rather than a charter flight. In NYC, Atlanta, etc. you’re guaranteeing flights pretty much across the board.

So the ACC is getting more money from the local authorities to offset its operating expenses (moving more money to the schools) and it’s offsetting the aggregate travel costs for the members. It makes sense if you look past the Carolina-centric optics…even though I think that the league is well advised to embrace its tradition in an era where tradition is being undervalued.

ACC schools who are taking busses to Carolina based venues. UNC, Duke,Wake, NC State, Clemson, VT and UVa. Probably GT. Pitt is on the cusp.

The ACC does not sell tickets to the general public. Each school gets 1500 and then those people sell them on the secondary market for the games their teams dont play in. So the seats are always sold no matter where its at. The issue is that because Greensboro is such a terrible city to have a major event, they better promise that their citizens are going to buy those tickets off Stubhub to go to the sessions which dont involve Duke, UNC, and NC St. I dont even mention Wake because they have no fanbase. The least Greensboro can do to compensate for being a terrible host city is to pack out the games. But they no show to all of them that dont involve 1 of the 3 local teams. That was definitely not my experience in a Wednesday nighter in DC.

Greensboro stinks. When is that handshake deal over? Same year the Raycom deal expires?

There is a zero percent chance that Pitt is ever taking a bus to Greensboro or Charlotte for an ACC men's basketball tournament. That's a seven hour bus ride, more for Charlotte. Charlotte is a four hour ride for Georgia Tech (and Greensboro another hour further). They are not busing their men's basketball team to either of those venues for the basketball tournament.

Their women's teams? Yeah, maybe. But not the men's teams. No way.

The ACC also announces that only the top 15 teams will compete in the 2025 ACC women’s and men’s basketball tournaments.

The men’s basketball regular season will continue with a 20-game conference slate while the women will continue to play an 18-game league schedule.

I don't like this. I know people will say that if you cant finish in the Top 15, you dont deserve to go but for me, you dont "earn" the right to play in a conference tournament. It should be for everyone in the conference. If they absolutely want to keep the double bye format, then have 15 play 18 and 16 play 17 on Monday to get in. If you dont want to waste the electricity at the Hornets arena or the Greensboro Coliseum, you could easily play them in a smaller arena. The Greensboro Swarm have a 2100 seat arena right next door. In Charlotte, they could play at Bojangles Arena, UNC-Charlotte, Queens University or somewhere else.

Monday
16 vs 17
15 vs 18

Tuesday
9 vs 16
12 vs 13
10 vs 15
11 vs 14

Wednesday
8 Vs 9
5 vs 12
7 vs 10
6 vs 11
