Andrew Stockey interview of AD Greene

Long interview, but a whole lotta nothing. My takeaways
- Family not here yet after almost 4 months - guessing kids/school related
- Didn't say much about Capel when Stockey asked him about the two major sports and the men leading them

Is the AD the problem or the Chancellor?? Or is it both? I never knew how much of the crap show we get every year for football and basketball was on the AD versus the Chancellor….someone in the know please tell me

BOT actually calls the shots .
Chancellors don’t really get involved in athletics

Ahh…ok…. The money gets time to get distributed. They make the final call on whether or not they should build a ball ball arena versus put it into the football program……hmm ok….

Is Fenway Sports Group interested in expanding their portfolio into college athletics? Maybe to the tune of, uh, $35M or so? (Revenue share payment + Capel buyout)

This isn't as unrealistic as you think. Some programs and also the Big 12 Conference are looking into selling a portion of their program. Given the terrible financial shape that Heather left us in, we may have no choice but to sell.

But why would Fenway invest in Pitt? Given the debt we have racked up, why wouldn't they pick schools with better balance sheets?

Unless they feel Pitt could be had for a song (they cant), Fenway aint the Catholic Church.

Doesn't matter. The damage done from decades of incompetence at Pitt is too much for any AD to overcome. Especially with NIL.

Actually it’s just the opposite. NIL allows for a do over for any great AD against previous mistakes. It’s a Get out of Jail Free card.

Hopefully Greene can make headway with the big corporations in Pittsburgh and then some of our fans/boosters that are on the sidelines join in as well.

Glad folks are finally being honest. Pitt fans are cheap AF and will use any excuse conceivable to avoid supporting the program.

I'm not sure the average Pitt fan is any cheaper than the average fan of any place else. Pitt has 2 major disadvantages:

- small alumni base compared to P4s so fewer potential donors

- most alumni are pro fans first (Steelers, Eagles, Pens, etc) so donating to a college team doesn't make sense to them

- the ultra rich Pitt fans/alumni don't donate much

We're looking at the future. Outsource day-to-day operations. Don't underestimate the lure of "future earnings". Let the management group hire/fire players and coaches, manage media rights, etc. Hell, you could set it up to where a player signs to the management group and it is like a 5 year contract and they hold the rights to the players into the player's professional career.

I could foresee a management group having multiple schools in their portfolio allowing them to shift players - as needed - to maximize revenue.

For college sports, that all sounds pretty terrible.

It seems like Greene is the all talk, do nothing AD. Unless he's having discussions with coaches, especially Capel and Narduzzi, that he wants results or they are gone. But he doesn't seem like a results type AD.

So you have him pegged in this short of a timeframe? You should use this gift and start a consulting agency. Limitless possibilities.

Football and men's basketball are pro sports and should be run that way. Even a mediocre program like Pitt has football and basketball players making more than some Steelers and Penguins. And they all make way more than the Riverhounds.
