Realistically, how could Pitt get into the Big Ten?

Also one more thing, most of them viewed western PA as kind of hillbilly compared to the rest of the North.... as in there is some commonality with WPA compared to the rest.
Does that mean they’ll go to bat for us if it’s ever time for the SEC to expand again? ;)

Well.... now would be a good time for Pitt to develop the world's largest smoker for tailgating. It couldn't hurt. 100% cotton cooking aprons and a special side burner for boiled peanuts?

All kidding aside, if the SEC goes north, who better than Pitt?

There was talk about an eastern independents creating a conference with most of the teams you mentioned. What happened was at that time Pitt and PSU were the only teams consistently winning and going to bowl games. Of course Paterno wanted a bigger bowl money split. But behind everyone’s back Paterno was negotiating with the Big 10. So the story goes.
There was also talk about the eastern independents and the Metro basketball schools forming a super conference in football and were far along the process but Florida State accepted an invitation to the ACC and that ended the any hopes for the super conference

I think it depends on how you describe “north.” WVU feels like a good fit for them and, IIRC, were rumored to be a potential candidate during the Missouri/A&M expansion. But after that, I’d have to agree with you that Pitt would be a great choice. Doesn’t hurt we just had a good series with Tennessee.

On a side note, I think an ‘Appalachian Division’ would be a lot of fun. Pitt, WVU, VT, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisville, and Cincinnati. Several strong rivalries there… maybe the SEC can create some of that in a few years? :)
