Attendance

The only way there were 2399 there tonight was if they counted eyeballs and not people. 1200 people, one of who was wearing an eyepatch, sounds about right. And is certainly a hell of a lot closer to the truth than 2399.

This is really depressing.

This is really depressing.

I took a photo (that I will not share here) during the first commercial break of the first half. In the photo you can see all the people sitting on the side of the arena behind the benches from the section where the visiting fans sit down to past where you are supposed to sit, basically to around the corner on that end. Just for fun I counted the people in the photo. I got around 220 people. And yeah, it's possible I missed a few. And yeah, surely a few people were late arriving, or out getting a snack, or whatever. So let's say it's an even 300. If we assume a similar number on the other side (a fair assumption based on what it looked like) that gets us to 600 (I'm not counting the Zoo yet). There were end zone section that didn't have 10 people sitting in them (as an example, my row had two people in it, the row behind us had two, the row in front of us had one, most of the rows behind us were completely empty). Let's be generous and call it 100 total. So we are at 700. There might have been 100 people total in the upper level. 800. And the Zoo was kind of full in the sections from the band to the baseline by the Pitt bench. There were very few people in the Zoo end zone seats. I'm thinking 400 would be generous. That gets us to 1,200.

I thought (and I think that you agree) that there were certainly fewer than the 2,600 people that they announced at the UCSB game. Well there were way, way fewer people there tonight. Not even close. About five minutes before tip the guy behind me said that there were about 200 non-students in the lower bowl. Just looking around I said yeah, that sounds about right, and he said, no I just counted, there are right around 200 people in the lower bowl. It was pathetic.

How many at the Arena on Friday, for this epic match between 2 of the worst teams ever to take the floor in this city?

Joe, absolutely agree with you. From the top of section 123 there is no way that crowd got over 1500 and I think it was closer to 1200 as you say. Makes getting to the rest room and back during a media timeout a lot easier than it was 2 years ago, but seeing rows and rows of empty seats is depressing.

First of all, season tickets are extremely expensive. There aren't many schools in the country who have season tickets and individual game prices higher than Pitt.

Pitt basketball really has no hope of drawing respectable crowds for the foreseeable future because it has the rare combination of astronomically high ticket prices to go along with a historically bad team and a coach who is universally disliked.

Whether Stallings is going to be here next year or not, Pitt needs to drastically reduce ticket prices to at least get fans more engaged. I am the biggest Pitt basketball fan I know and my first game will be on Dec 16. I gave up my season tickets because the price didn't equal the value of the product and I haven't even bothering getting tickets for a couple bucks on the secondary market because this is pretty much a year off for me in regards to Pitt hoops.

If Pitt had a coach that I could believe in, that I thought had the program headed in the right direction and its ticket prices were in line with the demand, I would have kept my season tickets and went and supported the team but we are stuck with a coach that nobody wants, that isn't recruiting any better than Dixon, and most importantly doesn't inspire any HOPE that better days are ahead

Do we need to tarp half of the arena?
Half? You'll be able to fit the entire "crowd" into one side of the lower deck.

Pitt absolutely should buy one of those huge curtains that PPG Paints has and the BJ Center has and close the upper deck. The lower bowl seats 7K-8K. That is more than enough. They can open the upper deck when the blue bloods come in or when the team gets better

Think I saw online that first 500 students from last nights game were guaranteed lowers vs Duke.

Hopefully Coach K has compassion, I can only imagine what that frontline of high lottery picks is going to do.

The good news is that Pitt or Sodexho or whoever continues to staff the concession stands as if they are roughly four times the amount of fans at the game. Eating at the games has been a breeze both times I have went.

Move the basketball games back to Fitzgerald Field House, then move the football program to the arena football league and play the games in The Pete, and tarp the upper deck.

I think fixing the hoops program is the only option we have right now. I just have zero confidence that this administration and this coach have even the slightest clue how to do that. But it can be fixed and it is possible to get back to a packed Pete and winning consistently.

the good news for die hard fans is that you can get a great seat very easily !

It's funny, I live in Maryland, near UMBC and am on the UMBC sports mailing list because my daughter went to soccer camp there, and UMBC has very similar ticket packages to what Pitt has offered, like 4 games for $40. of course they have a gym that holds like 3000, and maybe gets 500 per game. But they had a good year (for them) last year and went like 21-16 and went to the final of one of those secondary tournaments, like the CBI for mid majors. Just ironic that Pitt is selling tickets for the same price a school like that does.

Huh? Pitt's prices are some of the most expensive in the country. What are you talking about?

I think it's great, the admin needs to be punished with lack of ticket revenue for this debacle.
Make Gallagher pay for the difference in revenue since he is the moron who is most responsible for this debacle.

Maybe there was 1200 hiding behind the closed curtains in the Campus View Club.
