i read in the paper that canon Mac beat carrick 77-0 in a state playoff match. That’s unheard of. Does it happen more than we think?

That might be unique in a playoff, but it happens in the regular season occasionally. When I was at Shaler (many, many years ago) we racked up a similar score against a very overmatched Aliquippa team.

Lebo's 1969 team had scores of 51 - 0 vs Baldwin, 61 - 0 vs Peters, 44 - 0 vs Chartiers Valley, and 45 - 0 vs Keystone Oaks. However today I am fat, old, bald, and poor and those scores haven't stopped the process at all!!!!

If my math is correct, that’s a fall or a forfeit in 12 of the 13 matches. And a tech fall in the other match. I think 78pts is the most you can get in HS?

There are 14 weight classes. 84 is the max, and it happens every now and then. The match in question was Canon Mac, a traditional powerhouse, versus Carrick, from the city league. The city league is its own district (district 8) so they get a team in the state tournament every year. Then the WPIAL (district 7)third place team kicks the snot out of them and goes to Hershey.

Reynolds (the state champ) beat a team in the District 10 semifinals 84-0. Their opponent held out their varsity wrestlers to save them for the consolation match since their coach didn't think they had any chance to win. They forfeited 7 matches and had 7 jv kids wrestle the other matches, and they all got pinned.

Well the Reynolds-Greenville match was over in 14 minutes... might be a record there for fastest match ever.

Flo Wrestling called Reynolds the “Gold Standard” of HS teams. That might be an exaggeration since they are in the smaller classification. Other people claimed it was unfair since their wrestling team also includes wrestlers from the local Catholic high school, which doesn’t have its own team. You know in the PIAA whenever you have a Catholic or private school involved, the word “recruiting” will be mentioned.

I'm sure it's probably happened before, but recently, a wrestler who lived in Norwin School District went to GCC, GCC doesn't have a wrestling team, he therefore wrestled for Hempfield and the two teams competed against each other, so you had a kid wrestling for a public school against the school district he lived in.

Mike, what is “the local catholic school” that produces wrestlers in transfer PA? Lol! Reynolds comes from a coaching tradition like no other. And theres no doubt could hang with and beat most AAA schools if not win states some years. From watching HS wrestling, I believe it’s the work ethic these kids are taught, that teaches them to win. They are battle tested pre-season every year (attending tournaments like Ironman) and most wrestle year round. I think they’re one of the most entertaining high school teams to watch. Recruiting? Nah
Don’t buy it, every team has kids that weren’t there from kindergarten. Look at Notre Dame this year & Burrell to name a few. They just get the finger pointed at them because there are on top.

Yeah, Mike, not sure where you got that information from but it’s incorrect. BA and myself are both from RHS and that’s fake news.

On the subject of blowouts, in 1991 Canon Mac defeated Chartiers Valley in their season opener, 75 to -2. Not only did Char Valley lose every bout, they gave-up two penalty points as well. CM went on to shut-out Brownsville that season, 74-0.
