Hillgrove is a Pittsburgh institution. He does Pitt BB, Steelers football and Pitt football, personally there is no one I would rather listen to for Pitt sports but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Would you rather have Greg Brown from the Pirates who acts like a play in May just won the world series.

I agree he is awful these days, but he will keep the job as long as he wants to. It would be nice if he would relinquish basketball on his own. He simply can't follow and call the action well enough to understand what is happening anymore.

Bill has had a great and long career...

He is a Pittsburgh legend, and there is no reason to bash him!

All I'll say is he is probably a bit past his prime.

No way! Hillgrove is a Pittsburgh institution and 100% Pitt! His critics can blow me.

I'm with you. (Well, maybe not the last line. ;)) But I don't even care how well he calls the game. It just wouldn't seem right hearing another voice call the Panthers.

Give Greg a break, he has had to sit through 20 losing seasons in a row. Its okay that he gets a little excited for a win.

How much bullschitt has Hillgrove endured as the voice of the Panthers? Personally, I like them both and don't wish to see either replaced....ever.

Could Hillgrove be more sharp? Of course he could. Could Brown be a lot less cheesy? Yes, he could too (I will not miss Arama-lama-ding-dongs - asinine).

Now, that uber-dork Tim Neverett...that is a different story. I'd rather listen to Gilbert Gottfried recite the Declaration of Independence than endure one minute of his banal cliche-riddled garbage.

Hiilgrove is Pitts Bob Prince an institution. Who knows Pitt Fb or bb better than Bill. My advise then is turn the sound off on the radio and let the rest of enjoy his broadcasts.

I know everyone expects things to be perfect but weather conditions were extraordinarily bad. Bill is a legend and we are fortunate to have him. I would encourage anyone to try to call a game through a monsoon with bad stadium lighting and half the team getting their first snaps. Good luck with that. I hope Bill is around for a long time.

Who cares about all the boring unrelated stats from years gone by that are not related to today's pirates. Brown sucked since his first game with the Bucs and still does. Even the pathetic cubs of years past wouldn't hire the guy when he applied several years ago.

You have to be a dick youngun to want Bill removed.. He is a LEGEND, and I want him here until he wants to retire. He is fine.

Bill is a link to the glory days...and were they ever! I wish some of you youngsters could have heard a broadcast with him and Johnny Sauer back in the late 70's and early 80's. Not just for content (Pitt was at the top of college football), but just for the excitement and atmosphere that the broadcast created when these two were on their game.

Some wag will respond that I am living in the past and it is time to move on. Not really...I just remember the past in the context of "why can't it happen again?" Anyway, I will gladly endure whatever diminution of Billy's skills are on display and hope that he stays in the job as long as he can. I would hope that he would give up his basketball and Steeler duties before he finally lets go of Pitt football.

Bill's voice coming over the radio speaker on a Saturday afternoon is a reassurance to me that not everything has to change...at least not yet. And to me, that is a good thing.

Actually, we could just run an audio tape of a current season game after Billy steps down. Just overlay it on the video.....would be just as accurate. And just as good to hear. I think they're auditioning Larry Richert for the FB job???

in his "prime" Hillgrove missed calls left and right (It's a fumble, no wait, the whistle blew the play dead, no, it is a fumble!!). He's a sports reader who made the jump to play by play and in any other market would not have lasted this long. But for some reason yinzers latch on to people who aren't qualified for their jobs.

I absolutely want Bill to continuing doing the "play by play" for Pitt on the radio.

He's fantastic.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

I can't tell you outside of the post game show when I have ever listened to him as I am either at the game or watching this invention known as television

Who cares? Billy is a legend and Panthers enthusiast. Me being a Steelers fan too, loved the Cope/Hillgrove combo. Myron Cope being a Pitt alum and Bill working for Steelers, Pitt football, and Pitt hoops for years. Some people may knock it, but I want the biggest yinzer out there as our announcer. You can hear in Billy's excitement every play how much he loves the Panthers!

Like him or not, he is one of less than a handful of announcers in the nation who currently do the play-by-play for both NCAA and NFL games. That's something. And, it takes most announcers everything they have to just do one game a week.

Exactly give the man some credit. If not for anything else at least for his loyalty.

I hope Bill is there until he dies in the booth. Does a great job.
One or two of these threads starts up every year and I never understood why. Do you guys actually have trouble following the game? I've never found it to be a problem.
What Pitt should really do is get Bostik out of there. His voice is awful...sounds like he's talking with a mouth full of food. No personality whatsoever either. Complete opposite of Billy Osborn.

Try listening to Hillgrove while you are at a game. You'd think he was broadcasting a different game. Simply horrible!

You all liked Myron Cope and he was just embarrassing! Those of you who are Steeler fans did anyway.

Bill has a lot of friends and is a really nice guy. You are right though....he is very bad.

All I'll say is he is probably a bit past his prime.

I think it would have been accurate to say that he was a bit past his prime about 10 years ago. These days the best thing about Hillgrove is that since I go to the games I don't have to listen to him on the radio, because at this point he is, quite simply, awful.

Some folks here have brought up Bob Prince. Well most of you might not know this, but a few years after the Pirates fired Prince Prince himself said that looking back on the work he was doing at the end he would have fired himself too. As the years go by my guess is that Hillgrove is going to say the exact same thing some day a few years after he quits/is fired/gets pushed out from his Pitt jobs.

A new low...bashing Bill Hillgrove, who cares as long as he gets the score right. In addition, have some of you attempted to do play by play. Harder than what you think. Let the man go peacefully!

Bill probably has too much on his plate at this point. He probably needs to let the Steelers go. It will be tough for whoever replaces him with the Steelers. When Fleming was let go, you still had Cope, plus putting Hillgrove in there really made it easy for the fans, most of whom were already familiar with him. Will be tougher this time, as there is no Cope in the booth, nor is there anyone familiar the way Hillgrove was 20 years ago. I guess Stan Savran could be a short term guy, although the fact that he once worked for the Nits might rub some the wrong way. I pity any outsider who has to come in and take those jobs. I guess George Von Benko might be an option as well.

Billy is an icon for Pitt sports ..... he loves Pitt ...... he is a great guy ..... but, I think we all would have to admit that he has lost a step or two over the years.
