Burton had one of the best individual performances I can recall. Scoring 31 on just 17 shots - making 0 3s - is almost perfect offensive basketball.

Just an incredible individual game - Burton is an early candidly for first team all ACC .

He was fabulous. Tremendous job of recognition and execution.

He was either too strong or too quick for the guys UNC used to try to guard him. And he exploited that.

And maybe even as important and something very few have talked about is that Burton also guarded Love for most the game and limited him to 7 points. So, JB scored 31 when coming in averaging 14.5 and Love scored 7 when coming in over 18. That is the ball game right there.

I was thinking a lot about this and trying to think of the better Pitt player offensive performances.

Artis had a monster 40+ game. Sam Young was lights out against OSU in the NCAA Tournament his senior year; he had some other similar games too. Lamar Patterson lit a few teams up his senior year. That is about it over the past 20 years or so. It was a great game for him.

I said in another thread that he reminds me of Lamar Patterson

I'd say this was the second best Panther game at the Pete, putting only the Sam Young 31 point performance against UConn in 2009 ahead of it. I give that one the nod because it was on the biggest possible stage against a Top 5 opponent. But Burton's 14-17 makes a great case for him.

Some of others of this millennium include (not all at the Pete):

Trey McGowens 33 against Louisville (31 in regulation).

Artis' 43 against L-ville that you mentioned (although I tend to downgrade this performance because Jamel scored 30 of his points after the Panthers went behind by 26 points)

Sam's 32 against OK State in the NCAA tourney that you mentioned.

Mike Young's 30 against Marquette in the 2K Classic.

Mark McCarroll's 26 against Georgia (11-12 shooting).

Chevy's 29/12 performance against UConn in 2005 (25 in the second half to lead to Panthers to victory after a 13 point second half deficit).

Blair's 22 point, 23 rebounds at UConn in 2009.

Brandin Knight's 20 point, 14 assist performance against Miami in the 2002 BET.

Two of Lamar's best included his 28-7-7 against Maryland and his 30 against Clemson to pull the win in OT (both in 2014).

After three games, Jamarius leads the ACC in scoring in Conference only games at 21.3 PPG. He's shooting 67.7% in his three conference games (also leads).

Glad to see you mention Mark McCarroll. Maybe my favorite individual performance ever given it was so unexpected and dominant.

I want to say Mark McCarroll set the Pitt record for best FG% in a game with a minimum of attempts. I think he was like 9 for 9 or 10 for 10 vs Murray State in one of those fake holiday tournaments at The Pete.

You may want to say it ... but you would be wrong. And ... ummm ... did you even read my post? If you did, you'd see that I posted Mark was 11-12 against Georgia (including 7-7 in the first half). This was a few games after the Murray State game that year. But it was never a Pitt record. Several before and since have had perfect days from the floor with enough attempts.

Maybe the UGa game was the one I was thinking of. Yea, I did see your post and thought it would be weird if McCarroll had 2 games like that. I could have sworn a bench player had a record-setting FG% game in one of those fake tournament games. BTW, I remember Murray State coming in unbeaten and we were all pretty excited because usually we didnt even schedule good mid-majors OOC.

Well … YOU were excited anyway.

It beat the parade of NEC and MEAC schools that our Top 5 program felt the need to schedule

Well ... Top 5? Not really. We started that year ranked #22.

We opened that year in the Coaches vs. Cancer event at MSG against Alabama -- a team that went to the Elite 8 that year. We also played Georgia, Florida State and Penn State, along with our typical games at the time with RMU and Duquesne. Of course there were cupcakes too, as all teams schedule them.

And Murray State was a really solid opponent too.

We felt like a Top 5 program at that time. Not saying we were ranked #5 that year but we probably spent as many as weeks in the Top 5/10 as anyone from that era. And our schedule sucked. Capel is scheduling (perhaps stupidly) tougher.

The 2001-2002 team was ranked in the Top 10 for just three weeks.

The 2002-2003 team was indeed ranked in the top 10 for the entire season (19 weeks),

We lost 3 seniors from the 2002-2003 team (all were starters -- two were All Conference and the third was a double digit scorer) and had a new Head Coach. We had not yet established ourselves anywhere close to the level you are suggesting at that point. At that point it didn't feel like we were a top 5 program to anyone but maybe you. The schedule that year was fine. The only complaint about the schedule that year was not playing a "true road game" as our only travel that year was to MSG with Alabama and at Duquesne just down Fifth Avenue.

I gotta ask you DT, do you remember all this stuff off the top of your head or do you have to look up some of the details when you make these posts. Particularly being able to remember the specific year or years when something happened. I can remember certain games or individual performances of note, but unless we’re talking some championship year, I could never rattle of the specific year of some of these events 20-some years ago regardless of how notable.

You have a pretty good memory if this is all readily retrievable off the top of your head.

(Sadly) I remember most of it. For example, everything in this thread is from memory.

Occasionally, I'll look some things up just to double check. And there are plenty of things I plain old dont remember. But the truly pathetic thing I must confess is that I regularly read the Pitt media guide for fun. It's really my only hobby (which I know isn't really something to be proud of). Back in the Dixon days, I also used to help Greg Hotchkiss edit the media guide so I really went through all of the records thoroughly.

I also makes a difference that I have only missed five home games since 1998 (I am kinda proud of this though).

Is there a story I have missed somewhere about what happened with McCarroll? At one time he seemed to have a decent shooting stroke. What happened? I look at his 27% free throw percentage from his senior season and I think there had to be some kind of mental block with him, like he had the yips or something.
