I'm taking my son for a campus tour Oct 7th and staying for the game on the 8th. If I stay near the university, what's the best way to get to the game? I know the school shuttles students. Could we ride those too?

I would just get an Uber for the 3 mile trek.

You could walk to the game since it is around 3.5 miles downhill and take an uber back afterwards or take an uber both ways.
You could walk it but that's a loooong trek. I would recommend either Uber, or taking PAT (or is it PRT now?) bus down Fifth Avenue into downtown then walking over to the stadium, or even once downtown jumping on the T (the light rail system) over to the North Shore.

You just made the best case for an on campus stadium that’s ever been advanced on this board. Walk 3.5 miles for a football game and find another way back afterwards. Sounds fun.

Incidentally, wouldn’t there be like 10,000-20,000 people trying to grab an Uber at the same time after the game? In my experience with similar situations that doesn’t work out very wel.

You're best bet is to probably Uber, the shuttles don't typically care who rides on them to the game but it really depends on who's running the shuttle system that day for whether they are checking student IDs. Ubering takes out having to deal with other BS that comes with student shuttles

As I said here once before when someone suggested that, has there ever been one person in the history of Heinz Field who walked from Oakland to the North Side for a football game, or walked back to Oakland after a game, since the day they built the stadium?

Because that would be really, really dumb.

Give him the real city experience and hope on a 71A and get off at Duquense. Then hope on the T.

Taking an Uber will get you caught in traffic.

If I were you, I'd check with the school to see if you could ride the buses. Do you have an official tour guide you're working with at Pitt? Maybe he could help?

Really? Spend $300 million to turn a 3 mile walk into a 2 mile walk. 👏 👏 👏

We walked from the civic arena back to Oakland when the busses didn't come after a pens student rush game

Yes you can take the bus.

Or just take a PAT bus to Wood St downtown and take the free T over to the stadium.

Take the a PRT bus from campus to downtown. You can get the route from Google maps and take any of the 61’s or 71’s to downtown (they all follow the same route from Oakland to downtown). If it’s nice enough, I’d recommend walking across the bridge to the north shore.

It is my understanding that the school shuttles to Heinz are available to anyone and you both should be able to use them. I've never used them myself, but that is my understanding. I'm sure someone on campus, or during your tour, will be able to definitively answer that question for you.

You can drive and park for free at the Rivers Casino. It's a 5 minute walk to the stadium.

Or since he’s likely driving his kid to Oakland - can just drive the 3 miles are park .
Or take any of the dozen busses ?

I would drive to PRT First Avenue Garage and park. Will be an easy 10 minute ride from campus area and likely no substantial traffic on that route.

it will cost you $6 to park there, but you can catch the T from there for free right to Heinz Field (or whatever the field is called now)

No not really on a new stadium. Just pointing out the lunacy and impracticability of walking 3.5 miles one way through any city to watch any football game. Only to then be left post game with the same walk uphill, or paying for ride share transportation.

Pitt’s stadium situation is what it is. But to suggest it’s walkable from campus is absurd.

If they have a car … this might be the best answer. I gave up my North Shore parking pass and this is what I now do.

What about on Thurs night for WVU and getting there early during the workday? That might be a madhouse and pricey.

Have you ever walked our campus during a full day of classes? 3 miles for an 18 yr old is easy.

Wait…. Drive 2 miles to pay to park and walk another mile?
There's a big difference between the walk from downtown to the stadium vs. the walk from Oakland to downtown to the stadium. I do not even know what the precise distances are for each leg of that (I'm willing to bet the Oakland-to-downtown part is more than double), but there's just something mentally a lot easier about a walk when you can see your destination from your starting point.

Someone said getting an Uber after the game must be tough ... it's actually not as bad as you would think. They have a designated Uber pick-up place near Gate B on Reedsdale Street and it's relatively efficient. Although be prepared to pay the surge pricing rate.

My initial suggestion was to walk to the game as it is downhill and uber back!

I walked close to 3 miles to get to Camp Randall. Maybe more. Probably about the same at the shoe.

I walked that all the time, from the South Side slopes to Heinz. My husband would drive over and we would go to game. It was great to walk thru town and see things that you didn't notice. Didn't do it every game but many Pitt and Steelers, hell would walk from South side to Pitt Stadium too. Such wusses today, can't walk anywhere. Would do it now but I am in charge of being the uber and taking people over.
