Jared Grasso. Much like I said about Hurley, I believe Grasso would be a superstar in this town. Ideally you’d like to get a coach with a bit more of a resume at the mid/high major level, but Grasso is an absolute rising star in the coaching profession and worth whatever risk is involved.

I meant Pitt fans are so excited about volleyball that basketball doesn't matter as much anymore. 10K every night at volleyball games. National TV every game. Rabid internet following/support. Pitt fans just cant get enough of women's volleyball basketball being downgraded just doesn't matter to them so Lyke shouldn't be as responsible for basketball.
One of the numerous good high school coaches out there would be a start and an improvement over what we have now.
He’s really good, but some baggage there. I prefer Odom who has been a head coach longer, turned around 1 program, is coaching at a higher level, has experience recruiting ACC country and wants to burn down every ACC program for passing over him.
Good luck getting him. He's not a mid-major guy. The MWC is a high major league.
Seems like he'd have better options if he has a good season. If Pitt wants him, they'd have to hope he goes like 18-13 this year.
He would 100 percent take the Pitt job, has been eyeing the Pitt job, and would take it for 2 million so you don’t have to overpay. As always, you don’t know what you’re speaking about.

It's worth a shot. But we all know Lyke isn't going to get rid of Capel any time soon. We're stuck with this loser for now.
Can’t go wrong with either guy. Miles better than a high major retread, which I hope they avoid all together this time around. Get a coach on the way up and take the risk that he may leave for a bigger job one day rather than making a safe choice
This isn’t 2nd hand here say. From the horse’s mouth he wants to be in the ACC, would take the Pitt job, and want would go scorched earth on the ACC (especially Wake).
Imma try to actually answer the question. Do I think his time here should be over? Sure.
But a reason not to fire him?
Would not just be the money — but the money PLUS the real concern that the next guy won’t be any better.
Our old formula can’t work anymore. Guys aren’t staying 4 or 5 years then playing men against boys. Need to able to constantly lure talent, and that just isn’t happening with a program in the dumps.
The only way to flip that script would be an elite hire. A known commodity, or lightening in a bottle with a guy that would be that guy someday. The chances of hitting on that? Probably not high. So that’s why time on the buyout is being milked.
But a reason not to fire him?

Pitt got incredibly lucky twice , they hired Ben Who from Northern Arizona and after an incredible turnaround and a failed national search they reluctantly hired his unknown assistant and hit the the power-ball .
The only bb coach Pitt ever hired that was the man to get at the time was Paul Evans ( only because he had the Admiral ) Let’s. It kid ourselves its not going to happen now . ( They had the Golden Panthers and a roster to kill for .)

It would make perfect sense that he wants in the ACC, not debating that. I just dont see Pitt landing a highly sought after high major coach when there will be better jobs, maybe even better ACC jobs open. NC State will probably be opening. There will be others.
We can throw out the excuse now that players want to play for teams with consistency in their coaching role. Players now jump year to year and we're lucky if we have a guy on our roster for longer than 2 years. Go out and hire the best coach you can. If he doesn't work out, pay him to leave and hire another one. And don't let it take 5+ years to figure that out like we're doing now! The players don't have any loyalties. Neither should the school or the coach. The days of a Boeheim or Coach K hanging around for decades are long gone. A long tenure for a coach now is 4 years.
There are exceptions I’m sure but by and large players want to play at the highest levels possible and they want to win. Pitt has and has had a bunch of guys that are in over their heads. Until that changes these lousy teams will continue. I just don’t see any path where Capel is capable of changing anything to any appreciable degree.
I think Odom not only would be the best hire for all of the reasons listed herein, but I think it would energize the fan base (at least this board). He has a good team this year at USU so my worry is he has a great year and someone like NC State swoops in and beats Pitt out like they always do.
I would also submit Jeff Linder at Wyoming. I love the team he has put together after inheriting a dumpster fire. He is missing one of his star players, Graham Ike, but that is a dangerous team. Ike and Hunter Maldonado could have gone to any blue blood had they gone in the portal and he kept them in Laramie. Pretty impressive.

NC State will not open this year. He will do enough to keep his job unless he decides to take a job like Marshall (which would be a possibility) to buy him a new contract.

Yeah but the thing is... anybody would do better than this. I really mean that. You would have to actively go out of your way to do this bad, and even then you still probably couldn't pull it off. What he's doing now isn't even really possible. They're going to have to rewrite reality because of Jeff Capel's time at Pitt.
Barnes hired Jay Vidovich. That, much like Heather Lyke's "get" of Randy Waldrum, was a gift that fell in to his lap however.
Maybe that's it. Maybe Capel is actively and intensely trying to be this bad of a coach. That's the only answer I have, other than he's just plain stupid and lazy. Probably a combination of both.
I don’t believe he’s anything other than a guy without the answers . If he wanted to be gone I’m sure there could’ve been a mutual parting of the ways last yr . He’s the great assistant that just isn’t a good head coach .
Odom had one excellent year with that huge upset, but how much has he done outside of that? I like consistency.
what do you think his roster would look like at Pitt? obviously you are dialed in with Odom and your AAU- Prep school circuit can you speak to what he would do?
I do not know who he’d hire, what he would do or anything like that. Just know he is very interested in what’s going on in Oakland.
