Capel and Young: A Tale of Two Coaches

Let’s see how the season shakes out. They can as easily go on another winning streak as they can stay on their current losing one. Pitt hasn’t been a legitimate contender for almost a decade now. There isn’t a tradition of winning here anymore. So it’s on these kids to re establish it again. Easier said and done.

VT might have been a mess but they’ve made the tournament often the past few years including a sweet 16 just 2 years ago. They have that precedent now that we used to have before Scott Barnes took a sledge hammer to the program before leaving.

Its easy to think Mike Young would do the same here. But that’s not a guarantee.

So that's 3 wins vs NIT teams and over a team with 7 players? Pitt had much better wins in Season 1. This team hasn't improved.
Even in the heydays of the program Pitt never had a roster composed of as highly rated players that Duke has . Even in down yrs beating Syracuse twice is an accomplishment.

Both Trey and X caught FSU and Louisville underprepared for their ability to get to the hoop in their freshman yr , teams caught on and took that away and Pitt won 1 more game .

How quickly Young turned it around at VTech after losing so much is a testament to him and his staff. Christian Webster is a rising star and a name to watch in coaching circles.

That’s a much tougher gig than Pitt, so it shows that turning a program around in short order doesn’t require a miracle. Player development, program culture, and a strong recruiting plan. If you have those, you’ll be fine.

CWebbie is one of the best in the business. Should be next head coach at Harvard or another small school by the time he’s 30.

They quit for 2 straight seasons and certainly have appeared to quit again. You dont lose at home to ND by 26.

Mike Young has truly done one of the most impressive coaching jobs I've ever seen. He inherited only 4 players from Buzz and 0 of his incoming recruits. Of those 4, only 1 (Bede) played major minutes and 2 of them never played any games for VT because they were redshirting. 1 of those guys, Landers Nolley transferred after a season, another graduated, and Radford is suspended for the rest of the season. So halfway through Season 2, Young has a grand total of 1 player from Buzz Williams and like 11 new players. All he's done is taken that group to be a lock for the NCAAT.

When Young got the job, I really thought VT could do better. I view those mid-major guys as lottery tickets but I was also somewhat relieved VT would be taking its place back towards the bottom of the ACC. Packer and Durham were talking about Young last week and Packer said he was happy that Young finally got a big job, but he thought he might not win a game considering what he inherited. I probably posted something similar.

If you contrast this to Stallings and Capel, Stallings inherited much more talent than Young and managed to to go 4-32. Stallings's first team had a lottery pick and 2 guys in Artis and Young who played briefly in the NBA.

Capel had a similar rebuild to Young. He inherited JWF, Davis, Stevenson, Brown, etc. But 3 years later, his team is trending towards the bottom of the ACC, going for a 4th straight last place finish while Young is going to the tourney in Year 2.

Basketball isn't a long rebuild guys. Capel has some major problems. We are embarking on our patented long winter losing streak as our guys check out and it would appear some of our best players will not return which may leave us in the basement again next season, potentially for a 5th straight season.

Pitt hoops is in serious trouble
Young recruited good shooters who can score. Capel recruited athletes who couldn't hit the ocean from 5 feet away.

He recruited a first-team All-ACC/borderline Player of the Year candidate in Champagnie along with ACC caliber starters in X and Toney so recruiting and talent level doesn’t seem to be the issue to me. 10 days ago this was a team everyone thought was going to make the NCAA’s, now posters think we are headed to 0-21 next year. The performance against ND is worrisome, but I still believe in Capel and can’t imagine any hire Pitt could have made doing much better.

Huh?

Mike Young is going to the tournament with only 1 holdover from Buzz Williams in only his 2nd season. Everything I said holds true.
Seems to me you show your disrespect for the University of Pittsburgh with every post. Mike Young is a lousy Coach. He didn't do a damn thing last night to stiop Pitt's momentum. He got lucky with a couple of recruits. Ther's a reason he spent a lifetime in a crappy school in a crappy conference. He can't Coach. He git lucky with a bunch f threes vs UVA. That's not Coaching. Too bad your knowledge of the game is the opposite of your hatred for the U pf Pittsburgh. What's your problem anyway. If you hate Pitt so much why do you waste your time here? Yiur posts will not change a thing. Think Lyke reads your crap? I found a lot of very good and fair posters here. You destroy this site for newbies.

The hoopie boards are filled with hoopies...

I’m not sure VT is “much tougher”. It’s a great school with great facilities and a great athletic Dept. The arena itself might not be on par with the Pete, but everything else is great...along with their basketball budget which is much more than Pitt.

It is nothing but a lie to claim that Young brought V-Tech up from the ashes. Lets try some facts. 15-16 season they were 20-15 and then they were 22-11 and then they were 21-12 and then they were 26-9. Gee don't you all wish that Capel had to bring Pitt back from those hideous seasons.

Dude, Young inherited a dumpster fire. Worse than what Stallings inherited and similar to what Capel inherited.

He inherited only 4 players and no recruits. Only 1 of which is on the roster in his 2nd season. The turnaround he has done in having success quickly after turning over an entire roster is one of the most impressive things I've seen in college hoops.

You are WRONG. you just want to make Pitt look Pitt. Lets see Young inherited a team with 26 wins. Stallings left a team that couldn't win a game in its conference. Grow up. Find something accurate to hate Pitt about. You love Young We get it. He probably wishes you'd shut up about him since you pbviously love the big, and that big is literal and figurative, big cheat out in Arizona.

He inherited 4 players and 0 recruits. 2 of those 4 never played a game for Buzz. Only 1 of those players is on the current roster. The number of games Buzz Williams won couldn't be more irrelevant. Young had a TOTAL rebuild just like Stallings, just like Capel.

There are more Wofford player/recruits on the current VT team than Buzz players or recruits.

From the nutjob who brought you the classic post, "Tony Bennett is the best basketball coach in the world" comes its sequel in insanity, "Mike Young's first year and a half at Va Tech is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen."

Vtech had 4 straight 20 plus win season and a coaching change; it wasn't coming of a 0-18 season and coaching change.

To argue the point you are trying to make is just silly.

Name some things more impressive than inheriting a team with:

4 players, only 2 of whom had ever played a game
0 starters
0 recruits
Only 1 holdover on the roster in Year 2

I bet you wont.

So when Young had his first open gym or whatever and there were 4 players plus some walk-ons and managers, what does it matter that the previous coach won a bunch of games with other players?

As I said, what Buzz did was completely irrelevant. Young had a total rebuild.

"I bet you won't waste your time compiling a list of sporting achievements more impressive than going 14-16 at a mid tier+ program in the ACC" is not the gotcha you think it is.

I kind of have to stick up for SMF’s point here. Of course he has over hyperbolized his point, but when Young took over every ACC analyst had VT picked last in the conference. As it turns out he had Landers Nolley waiting in the wings to step (he has subsequently transferred) so the cupboard wasn’t as bare as what Capel took over, but Young certainly has far, far exceeded expectations.
