Charlotte FC, Tepper's Team

Once again pontificating on something you know nothing about.

The average MLS payroll last season was $13.4 million. The average Liga MX payroll was $10.1 million. If you mashed all the teams together into one list the highest is Tigres, but the next three highest on the list, the Galaxy, Atlanta and Toronto, are MLS teams. The lowest MLS payroll last year was Colorado at $9.9 million. There were 12 Liga MX teams with smaller payrolls than that (out of 18), including two teams with total payrolls less than $4 million.
That is misleading because the MLS model is:

- pay 2-3 "designated players" 7 figures and pay everyone else 100K. I am estimating obviously but pointing out that MLS teams only have a handful of players who can make a Liga MX team. At the very top, they are as good but once you get to the bottom half of the starting 11, they cant compete. Its why MLS teams very very rarely beat Liga MX teams

Well first of all, how much money do you think that those players who are playing for teams like Mazatlan and Queretaro, who have total payrolls less than $4 million, are actually making? Hell, there are MLS PLAYERS who are making more than those whole teams.

Secondly, the reason that MLS teams rarely beat Liga MX teams when the play in the Champions League is in large part because those games are played mostly before or very early in the MLS season but right in the heart of the Liga MX season. I mean the MLS teams that played in the round of 16 played their games before the MLS regular season even started. And the quarterfinals start this week, which comes just after the MLS teams have played their second game of the regular season. If you have two teams that are approximately equal and one is in pre-season or early season form and the other is right in the middle of their season who do you suppose has an advantage there?

Mazatlan is a bad example. They're a team that bounces back and forth. Liga MX apparently has some lowly paid teams at the bottom.

What are the salaries for Club America, Chivas, Tigres, Santos Laguna, the top clubs because those are the clubs that make MLS teams look like 2nd Division teams during Champions League.

Also, you are vastly overestimating the advantage Liga MX teams have playing MLS when 2/3 of their season is complete. MLS teams will be playing their 5th game of the season vs Liga MX tomorrow. They've also played 3 or 4 exhibition games. They are in game shape and fresher than Liga MX teams. By your 5th game of the season + exhibition games, there's no excuses.

I don’t think you understand soccer fitness. I don’t know anything about champions league, but I do know that if there are March and April fixtures, it puts MLS way behind the 8 ball.

It works the other way too. Liga MX teams have only 8 games remaining their season which began in August. This is game 5 + exhibitions for MLS teams. You could certainly argue that MLS teams being fresher and largely injury-free is an advantage. Either way, there is very little advantage to be gained. The team with better players will probably win.

If only someone had provided a convenient chart with all that information in it.

That's OK, I like the MLS the way it's run, I don't want it to become like that, or like the top Euro Leagues where 2-3 Super Clubs win 19 of every 20 championships. I like it being like the NFL, with a hint of parity, where you aren't sure if the same teams will be at the top every time.

Well…it looks like this is MLS’s year to win the Champions League.

3 of the 4 to be semifinalists are MLS. This HAS to be the year!

Its 2 legs.

NYCFC beat a team from Guatemala 3-1 in Hartford. Man that team needs a home. They should be able to move on.

Seattle and New England beat Leon and Pumas 3-0. But they aren't out of the woods as both go to Mexico. 1 goal by each though should do it as the Liga MX aren't going to score 5.

Montreal had a "good" 1-0 loss to Cruz Azul. They go home to Montreal needing a 2 goal win to move on or a 1-0 win to force PKs.

Yes I understand it’s two legs. But with these 3-0 leads, and another game still within reach, they gotta finish the job. And these are allegedly strong MLS teams other than Montreal from what I understand.

I remember once 2014, Olympiacos beat Man United 2-0 in the first leg at home and was so excited about it, I guess it was like Pitt beating BAMA or something, back then I think MU was the very top team, ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool, MC etc. then losing 3-0 in the 2nd game, all they needed was to score one on the road and they would of won.

New England has a lot of talent:

Former US players: Altidore, Omar Gonzalez. Lletget still plays some for US. Gustavo Bou is as good as of an MLS striker as there is but he's part of what I complain about:

- Argentinian who has never played for the national team

- played his whole career in Argentina and Mexico. These South American guys are good players but they are unrecognizable. The league needs more star power.

- NYCFC, again, has a few non-descript Argentinians as their best players.

- Seattle has Roldan and Morris but they arent as good as NE and NYC I don't think. They arent as good as the Dempsey-era teams.

- Montreal - dont know much about but they always do well in Champions League.

I think I could watch MLS teams play in the CL and enjoy it because I’d have a rooting interest. I’ll have to try and remember to check out the games when they are on.

Yeah I think any conversation about omar should be more about replacing him and upgrading the position because he’s a weakness.

I haven't seen either of them play this year, but when your last team doesn't have any interest in even offering you a new contract (in the case of Gonzalez) or is simply desperate to get rid of you (in the case of Altidore), that's usually not a good sign.

Some of the games are on the Fox channels. It looks like next Tuesday FS2 is showing the NYCFC game. And then on Wednesday FS2 is showing the Montreal game followed by FS1 showing the New England game. And on Thursday FS1 is showing the Seattle game.

All the CL games are televised, at least on FS2. They even show the Central American/Carribean qualifying tournament live if you're interested but they're all on

FS2 is also showing Women's U20 CONCACAF Tournament every day. I tuned in USA vs Puerto Rico for a few minutes out of curiosity, and i was correct! 7-0!
