A new sports bar opened up where the old Do Drop Inn was, and I stopped by there the other day. We ordered a bunch of food, and off course wings. Wings is always the metric by which these things are measured.

So the basket came, and immediately my brother looked at me, and I looked at him........and WOW, THESE THINGS WERE HUGE! And folks.....this is not good! You ordering chicken wings, not turkey wings. You want a lot of meat, order friggin chicken breasts or chicken thighs.

I even talked to the one bar owner and she said "I know, but that is what people expect". Well, most people in the AK Valley are idiots (sorry). They are the cheapest human beings always trying to look to get more than they paid for.

Why do you order wings? It is that juxtaposition and ratio of meat (not quite white, not quite dark) to skin, where each bite gives you crispy skin with a portion of meat, combined with whatever seasoning or sauce you ordered. These HUGE wings, sorry, it ruins all of this. They are hard to cook correctly, they are also hard to eat, especially served whole like they are in the AK Valley and mostly around Pittsburgh.

It is funny, the owner said "I like mine smaller too", but......yeah but.....friggin cheapskates what their "value". Like I said, order a fried chicken best if you want a lot of meat. I am not sure why there is this obsession over jumbo chicken wings. Like I said, eat turkey wings then. But chicken wings are not made to be huge. It is a drumette not a drum stick. Please someone.....get the message out to the AK Valley bars and restaurants, STOP ORDERING JUMBO CHICKEN WINGS!

Let's play Devil's advocate. The owners could serve smaller wings, and have you as a dinner guest. Or, they could serve what they are currently serving, and have the entire AK Valley eating there.

Is that what I'm reading?

Isn't the first rule of marketing to find out what your customers what; and at what price they'll pay for it, then give it to them?

were they wings or not? If you got a place with meatier wings that are the winged portion of the animal, I'm there...

on a side note...does anyone else drummie-save? ya know, eat all the double boned ones first so you can finish with the durmstick ones...

Recruits, that owner was Ashley Daniels and she’s also a Real Estate agent helping me buy a house in Sarver. Haha...small world. If you want great wings, stick to the Praha in Tarentum for Funzi wings, or Gunny’s in New Ken for their wings. Both are great IMO.

Yeah Gunny's have always been a favorite going back 20+ years. Look, I am just trying to give some advice, it was close to my house and we all decided to stop in and see what the place is like.

Here's the other part of those huge wings, you can't sauce them? Wings aren't supposed to be that big. I just wish people in the AK Valley would understand this. Yet I am talking about a section of the world that thinks steak should be well done (and under $10), French Dressing and Ketchup are food groups, variety means to you want ravioli or lasagna?

Never did that...but luckily my wife eats all the double boned ones (that just doesn’t even sound right). So I luckily get all the drumsticks by default.

My advice is to fry your own. When deep fried turkey became all the rage it became easy to get driers that would accommodate multiples at a time. Similarly, you can sauce or season them the way you want too.

If I'm out that way, Buffalo Bill's Roadhouse in New Ken wood-fired wings is my go to.

To me, love me so full wings:

I always called these wing dings and to me not worth the bother

No shit. Really? Never thought of that. But you know, going our to the local bar, watch a game, having some wings, I should bring my own? Obviously I do

I prefer the pieces if you are saucing them. But the above picture, I don't mind whole wings, as long as they are medium sized. And those above look like decently sized wings, not these gigantic behemoths that can't be cooked properly and hard to eat and even separate the sections. Which is my point.

Bar here in South Park called hot shots does the whole wing thing. You order a 1/2 dozen and you are full. I kind of like them. I like both actually so I won’t pick one side over the other.

I always drummie-save.

A bartender once told me that most people prefer the double-boned ones. I find that very hard to believe, but if anyone can actually verify that I'll be happy to start ordering all drumsticks.

Funny, I actually met up with a couple Lair brethren there 2 months ago. And I agree.

The double boned ones are the easiest to eat. Hold the side where the bones are connected and put the whole thing in your mouth. Bite down, and pull out two bones. Easy peasy.

Used to go to Ann's isn't that out your way? They had killer wings. This was also in the 90's.

Though known for fish, I love the wings at Dorido's. New place in USC I just tried last week called Toss are good but I won't go back too pricey. Big Shot Bob's that are popping up everywhere are good but again to pricey. I am weird with food prices. I have no problem paying $40 an entree, but tell me 12 wings are $12 or more and "f you" is my mind set. Yet $11 or less no issue from me. I am weird like that.

Dino’s in Latrobe used to have kickass wings. I don’t know if they still do because I haven’t been there in years.

I’ve literally never tried their wings and I live down the street. How is this possible.

Ive tried that way but i'm apparently too aggressive, I too often got one of the bone or joint of the bones, along with the meat, and either having to have to sift through the meat (worst case with fingers) or even swallowing it, ruins that particular mouthful for me.

So I tend to favor the little drumstick alternative if they are available. It's ideal when sharing if the other person prefers the double boned. But can be awkward if both like the same option.

Always thought they were overrated. Always thought Sharkey's was at better.

I’ve never had Sharkeys because I’ve never had occasion to go to Sharkey’s. I used to go with the family for wing night at Dino’s but that’s been 11 years. I’m sure quality has diminished since then.

Sharkey and Dino were business partners at first.

It's been over 15 years for me.

This thread is begging for a Chase Clowser reference.

Which by the way, what was the origin of Chase's wings bit? Was there an actual story behind it? I can't recall.

I did not like the wings at Sharkeys for some reason. I need to try Dino's. Actually anyone know who owns Dino's? I think I might know him.

I've always said Pitt fans will bitch about literally anything.

Big Wings are fine if they aren't cooked like smaller wings. Do you grill a 3/4" thick steak the same time as a 1 1/4' thick steak and expect the same result?

You twist the bones to separate them first, then tug one of the bones out and then chomp down on the remaining bone and pull it out separating the meat. Once you get the hang of it, its easy and the sauce to meat ratio is better than the drumstick. I love large wings when cooked properly. Usually though, wings are large because they are undercooked.

I was banned from there from late 90s til forever. Mark the coke head owner at the time held a grudge for over a decade.

Screw that place.
I am now learning that you have a history of being banned. Hmmmmmm?

You should have kept that quiet until Chris announced if he is going to allow you to stay here or not.

Think, man, think!! :p

This thread is sounding like some of us should get together and cook wings in the Spring at some point.

The whole wings are bad because:
1.) they never cook right
2.) you can’t sauce them becaus too much breaking etc needs to happen and your hands will be covered in sauce
3.) why am I doing all this work breaking them etc when I can just get the dings
4.) if you get 12 dings instead of 6 whole, you have the ability to try more sauces

I cook my wings on the grill and then my wife makes the sauce. Extra crispy is the key. Good Stuff and a Healthier Opton.
