Clemson

Brad Brownell is an elite at coaching. His problem has always been that he was never a good recruiter. Mike Young from VT is also like this. Mike Young might get my vote for coach of the year. I'm not sure they are paying any NIL at all and they are 6-7.

Brownell might just be a Top 10 X’s and O’s guy in the country. He certainly has coached circles around Capel for years now.

As for Young and VT, I have some friends who are diehard Hokies and they insist that they were going to be a good team before they lost their transfer PG from Temple due to suspension. His first year at VT might have been the greatest coaching job I have seen in the last 10 years. He took a nothing roster and got to the tourney.

Very hot seat. He gone.

Bum hire from the get go.
He did get them to a National Title game and they were a contender last year so it hasn’t been as bad as the Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty years, but yeah they need to move on. The ACC needs a Bruce Pearl or Brad Stevens-level hire at UNC to kick the rest of the league in the rear end. Thankfully, Wes Miller is falling flat at UNC otherwise I think he would be a favorite among the fanbase.

They werent even going to be good with him. The reason they got him is because he was caught shaving points so they didn't have to pay him since we was never going to be eligible. VT is probably paying the last amount in the P5. And he's 6-7. I feel bad for Young because he has no budget and he may be the 2nd best coach in the ACC. I cant believe the job he's doing this year. You're right. Young Year 1 might have been the best coaching job in ACC history and this is up there as well because he has lower level A10 talent.

UNC needs to hire Pearl himself. Pay him whatever. Syracuse should hire Nate Oats, who previously coached at Buffalo. Here's my list:

UNC - Pearl
Syr - Oats
FSU - Mack
Miami - Wade (match made in heaven)
UVa - Odom

I don't think Pearl & Oats are going anywhere. They have it made right where they are.

TBH, I'd like to see UVA give the job to Ron Sanchez. Given the situation, UVA's overall youth & inexperience, and having your 2 guys slated to run PG bail weeks before the season, I think he's really done a nice job.

Sanchez failed at Charlotte and is in danger of missing the ACC Tournament in the worst year ever for the league. Hiring Ryan Odom is the easiest decision. If Ron Sanchez was on the open market, he wouldn't even be able to land an A10 or American job. Maybe CAA/SoCon. So why should UVa stoop that low?

He didn't fail at Charlotte. And Virginia isn't going to miss the ACC Tournament. What kind of job would Jamie Dixon landed on the open market back in 2003? Sometimes its the culture/fit that already exists and the hire is someone that has been an integral part of that success. If it doesn't work out, no biggie. There's a Ryan Odom type available out there every year. And you can literally Kenny Payne your program and dig yourself out in 1 off season. There is little downside to hiring Sanchez. Sanchez is basically a continuation of Bennett-ball. Given the success of that niche at UVA, I think it's worth a shot to see if there is anything left in that tank. Because once you move on from it, there's no going back.

Have you watched UVA play recently? They are hardly the same team they were back in November. UVA has actually scored 70+ pts in 5 of their last 6 games. They couldn't do that against Coppin State, Campbell, Holy Cross, or Bethune Cookman back in November & December. There's been tremendous improvement in Andrew Rhode, Dai Dai Ames, and Blake Buchanan. And you can tell Sharma, Robinson, and Cofie are going to develop into very good college players. They are extremely young, and the majority of these guys are most likely going to be 4-year college players. The caveat is if they can return to being a culture & development program and succeed with that niche. It's hard to do in the NIL/portal era, but Shaka Smart & Matt Painter are proof that it can be done.

There's a reason Tony Bennett was selling this as a 2-year plan going back to last May. And right now, I like the trajectory. I was all in favor of blowing it up after that abortion of a west coast trip a month ago. A lot has changed since then and you can actually see this thing starting to come together. They are still young, and its probably a 3 steps forward & 2 steps back type of thing, but if they can keep the core of this team together, I think they have a bright future.

Clemson is the antithesis to Pitt in football and basketball. When we play head to head, Pitt holds their own but generally (always in basketball) loses in the end like both games this year. Clemson meets or exceeds expectations and gets better as the season progresses. Pitt almost always fails to achieve what could have been possible based on early season success. Clemson coaches get the most of their talent while Pitt underachieves. You have to be jealous of what they manage to achieve.

As noted, many teams like UVA are developing while Pitt regresses.

Not sure I agree with the prevailing board sentiment that Pitt would somehow benefit if the ACC returned to what it was ten years ago. Way better chance of us just becoming completely irrelevant.

*2nd season at VT.

Just my opinion, but I think the best coach out there that might be poachable is Chris Beard.

I dont disagree. I think some of those SEC coaches may be willing to move to get out of that rugged league. They have maybe 10 of the best 15 coaches in the nation. Ridiculous.

He still had Roy Willy's training wheels--i.e., his entire roster--at that time. They've been on a slow but steady decline since that natty game.

Their archival, Duke, on the other hand, made a very shrewd hire by letting Coach K hand pick his successor. Letting Roy Willy hand pick his probably wasn't the best idea. I think he did it more out of friendship and loyalty versus what's best for UNC, versus what's best for business like Coach K did.

Roy Williams went 14-19 and 18-11 in his last two seasons at UNC. His last team got in as an 8 seed and were blown out by over 20 pts to Wisconsin.

It's still a pretty small sample size with Hubert Davis, but it's been more up & down erratic than steady decline. They played a really tough OOC. They took some losses there, but they were still competitive. They are clearly regressing now and the last few games have been alarming.

Roy Willy's last two seasons were COVID years 1 and 2. Very strange times in college sports. Take a look at Roy's decade preceding that.

Hubert got to the NCAA final (despite losing 10 games) his first season with a 100% Roy Willy roster including Bacot and Love.

It's been up and down since. But that program isn't used to "down". And watching Carolina play under Hubert, it's hard to see any semblance of team basketball, mostly just individual talent. If his seat isn't hot right now, it's very warm.

I thought UNC played great team basketball last year. Their ball movement was exceptional more nights that not.

Like Pitt, UNC really doesn't have anyone reliable in the post. And this team doesn't shoot particularly well. Cade Tyson has been a total bust. There's only so much you can do with that. The most disappointing thing, in my opinion, for both UNC & Pitt is that they have responded by playing more selfishly offensively & become softer defensively. And yes, that's an indictment on coaching.

You can't afford, literally afford a miss like Cade Tyson or Cam Corhen or TJ Power. Too much money being spent on guys who were misevaluated.
