Dior Johnson in trouble

Truthfully, I’m just trying to carve a situation in my mind that makes him seem like not as bad of a guy solely so Pitt can have a better basketball season this year lol.

At the end of the day if he did what he was accused of then he should be gone.
Some level of cognitive dissonance is necessary to follow college sports. I agree that the ick factor is pretty high here, though.

It was reported that Dior Johnson had taken video and recorded it on his phone of some of this incident and is going to provide that to the court, including telling the girl to leave when she wouldn't leave.

I have no idea how this plays out. But obviously for his sake, if he has a chunk of what happened on video and / or if this woman was drunk or on drugs of some sort, it will help his case.

I have no opinion whether he is guilty or not because I obviously do not know either way.

No - I’m asking why it took so long to get the police involved after she got home (and away from the danger).
It should be at least plausible that her family may have sought legal counsel before contacting the Pittsburgh Police. They may have also wanted to provide their own photographic or medical evidence.

If my daughter was harmed by an athlete, I would absolutely expect that lots of forces are going to work against actual justice being served. I would get our ducks in a row before she spoke to anyone.

I just can't imagine that at least something felonious didn't happened, regardless of how they reduce or dismiss the charges. We still don't know all of the facts. But I wouldn't want the controversy and legal proceedings, including civil lawsuits, hanging around the team if I were the coach. He's just one kid. The team is more important.

Yes of course. Legally he is entitled to due process, but that doesn’t mean he should get the privilege of playing basketball with these charges outstanding. Get rid of this guy. Dixon got rid of Yuri Demetris in a hot second and I don’t even recall charges being filed.
If he’s convicted of the charges he’ll never see the court and if he’s innocent he should be allowed to continue his career .

As a greedy Pitt fan, I'd like to see him play. However, I require a small amount of moral behavior. Basically, dont kill, rape, or hit women. Just about anything else, I am ok in letting the legal process penalize the players and don't believe in double punishment. Stealing cars, bar fights, robbing stores, there is a legal penalty to pay so I wouldn't even suspend them. Hitting a woman though......man that's bad

Why can you not imagine that Dior did not do much more than pushing a woman that struck him first during an argument? I have no knowledge one way or the other. Do you have some special information that none of us have? I sure hope you are not on the jury.

So the police report only said he pushed her??? He struck her. That's all I need to know. He could have done more than that but it will be covered up or not proven. That's something that no man should ever do to a woman. That's a cowardly act. Maybe you know more than what is being reported or is in the police report??????

Something happened and Johnson did more than just push a girl. That's been widely reported and is in the police report. That's reality. I don't want that kind of person on my basketball team, if I'm the coach or a fan. I'm sorry if this isn't the popular view of this on this board or that Pitt fans want this kid to play even if he's found guilty of something, let alone a felony. Like I said, one kid isn't the team. The team is more important and the chemistry of the team is more important. Besides, we've got bigger problems than what's going to happen to one kid accused of a felony.

I think it’s fair to say that “something” happened. The nature of that “something” is still to be determined, but I don’t think this is much ado about nothing.

I don’t harbor any ill feelings towards those who want rid of him. Personally, his resume coming in would’ve been enough for me to pass but I’m not a coach whose job is potentially on the line. I think his charges will get watered down enough so that his return is in the realm of feasibility, at which point it will come down to if the staff wants him back and if Capel has enough leeway left with administration to get him back.

Is Johnson the difference between another year in the basement of the league and being in the postseason conversation? Does another year at the bottom seal Capel’s fate and cost a guy like Carrington who has some intriguing upside? It’s a lot easier for us to make a clear call on this from the outside, but there are going to be a lot of variables at play for Capel and Lyke to consider

Being that the strangulation charge is the only felony remaining, I agree with you.

My hunch is some plea deal gets done-
And Dior plays by conference time -
And based on history doesn’t finish the season

Well we will all accept the decision of the legal process and the decision of Pitt and it won’t change what we think about Pitt basketball one iota.

Hmm does he have a previous record?
Can you stay on scholarship if on probation? Play? I gotta think they’re writing him off suiting up this season.

He doesn’t appear to have any kind of prior record, at least not to anyone’s knowledge. You can definitely stay on scholarship and play if you’re on probation.

Excellent post and I agree with every point you made.

The critical point is if the charges are watered down, what does Capel do? If he lets him back on the squad, what will that do for his remaining tenure at Pitt and how will that sit with Lyke?

Johnson is not a savior of the program, especially considering the dire straits it's in now. Whether he comes back and plays or not won't make much of a difference, IMHO. Maybe an extra win or 2, but going from a borderline 0.500 team to 2 games over 0.500 won't matter.

The police report only reports what the victim states. It is not necessarily fact. It was done a month after the incident; thus the police did not investigate until 1 month later. You have made a decision that Dior is guilty without any knowledge of the actual events. How do you know that this victim is reliable and not just out for revenge? I really wonder about your motive to crucify this young man and have his life possibly ruined if he is only guilty of fighting with his girlfriend.

Usually value your takes.

Unless you have personal knowledge regarding the facts of this case, I think you are going out on a limb.

We are in an age where you have to believe the woman.

I am not trying to defend Dior. He may be quite guilty, but maybe not. None of us knows. That is what an investigation is for. Dior gets to defend himself. Many years ago my son(while in college) was charged with assault by a young coed. All he did was put his arms up to prevent this young woman from attacking him. She fell backwards falling over a couch. Lucky for him, he had multiple witnesses that showed up in court to tell the truth about the episode.

Is that like a redshirt, but called the "orange jumpsuit"?

I’m all for whatever gets Capel and His WORTHLESS brother out of here. Put Dior in the electric chair for all I care.

Atleast that would protect all future baby mammas from when Dior feels the need to Keep his Pimp hand Strong..
You are willing to kill someone to get rid of Capel. Nice!

Thank you! I’m reading all these posts dumping on Johnson because of what a police report made a month after the fact says and I’m wondering what I’m missing.

Johnson may well be guilty of some or all of what’s been written but I sure can’t make any solid conclusions because of that police report.

It's funny the people who want him to play are ignoring all the downsides to that. Like he'd probably be a bad teammate, take playing time from other players who might stay and are work developing, and he'll probably transfer anyway. Oh plus Pitt would look like shit.

Even if he's 100% innocent, which seems highly unlikely, I'm very skeptical that he's the type of guy will stick around. We need to focus on players who won't bolt to 17 schools or whatever. Coaches need to make calculated risks, not play naive.

Also "innocent" in what sense? OJ Simpson was criminally found not guilty but no TV station would hire him as a commentator because we know he's guilty -- and lost the civil suit.

Innocent is the sense that he did not really do what was alleged.

I have plenty of information on Dior Johnson: there is a medical discharge report, an arrest, and a pending trial with a preliminary hearing. The complaint includes details on the bruising. I know he played for 10 high schools, only one of which closed -- 9 times he transferred. I know he committed to Syracuse and decommitted. And to Oregon then decommitted. He's very unlikely to play for Pitt ever as well.

As to your question, there have been a little over 60 one and done players in NCAA since the rule was instituted I believe. One went to Pitt, and I would have been happy to have someone like him again, sure. But often it doesn't work out that well for them, or their college team, and would prefer they could just go pro. With NIL, I think we're unlikely to get another big time one.

Don't you guys know that the Pittsburgh media is 110% correct??? Pitt players always get slammed in the pathetic local media and its the breaking story. But let's not report on a st penn gang rape etc. Pathetic

Today, Capel can claim ignorance and say, "How could any coach have prevented this?"

If Dior comes back and does something ELSE, then Capel is doubly in the hot seat. Maybe it worked out with Hughley but how many times do you want to trust your career to dumb, delinquent kids?

It is still really hard for me to envision Capel working out here, so from his perspective, I just don't see the upside to warrant such a risky kid.

The player in your photo and in your name "levance" as in Levance Fields, the All American point guard that led Pitt to Big East Championships, a 1 seed, and an Elite 8, was charged in 2007 while at Pitt with:

-Aggravated assault including punching a police officer in the chest
-Public intoxication
-Disorderedly conduct
-Reaching for a Police Officers weapons' while fighting an officer ( reaching for his gun / Taser)

He was tased, arrested, and charged with multiple felonies.

Like I said above, I have no idea what Dior Johnson is guilty of. But at least know that the original story that was originally released on Dior Johnson by wtae was written by a rookie West Virginia graduate who is also a female.

It also did not take long for a bulk of the charges to already get reduced down. That also does not mean Dior is not guilty, but you or no one else posting here has all the facts to this case, only opinions.

Just as you don't have the facts of the Levance Fields case as you presented here. Or the Dior Johnson case. No one knows. DA's will do anything to be politically correct. Fields' charge of aggravated assault was reduced to a misdemeanor simple assault charge as he did not use a weapon and had no intent of bodily harm. He was drunk and disorderly. He also did not strangle anyone. Johnson's charge of strangulation, I believe, is sticking and is a felony. There is proof.

The point is that this kid did something that is a felony. How will the players on the team react if this kid is allowed to play? Will the fans even show up to watch him, if and when he finally does show up? And how will they react to his antics? How will Capel spin this or squirm out of this one?

College athletics in these major sports, no matter who we're talking about, is a cesspool. Then you add on the recruiting shenanigans and payoffs, NIL, and the portal and it makes you wonder how low college sports will stoop to get what they want. People admire and slobber over these little kids out of high school that can play football or basketball. Something's wrong with that picture.

Then why are you posting about the subject?? Get lost

Hey, quit acting like some tough guy. You aren't.

I've been a Pitt fan for longer than you've been alive. I know that because of your immature posts and infantile responses. I should be the one telling you to get lost, but I'm an adult.

This message board is so amusing with all of the tough guys and guys who have "inside information". Spoiler Alert: None of us knows any more than the next guy.

Lmao 🤣 this is a message board not an English class. You and some other butt hurt posters can't stand the truth. You have blinders on and are a follower. I wouldn't bet against my sources. Vader provided the information about Fields and bet you loved rooting for our team back then. But now let's bash JC for trying to be competitive.

And you keep on idolizing these little kids and jock coaches. What Vader posted about Fields was incorrect and I pointed that out. Strangulation and whatever else this loser Johnson did is a lot more serious than being drunk and disorderly and pushing an officer, if that even occurred. Take it up with whoever Vader is. And I would bet against your "sources". You're just some kid on a message board who knows no one.

Capel is doing a very poor job of being competitive. His results are pathetic and he needs to be held accountable for them.

Sometimes (all of the time), character is more important than winning at all costs.
