ESPN: Toughest Nonconference Schedules in 2017

Nice to see one of our opponents (Oklahoma State) make the list.

"And as long as Pat Narduzzi is at Pitt, the Panthers are always going to be a tough out. They beat Clemson and Penn State last season."

I know some people would rather that we play the little sisters of the poor to bolster our record, but I like playing legitimate opponents
I love it, it's exciting. Compare the feeling you'll have the morning of the Ok state game compared to the feeling of the morning of the rice or fcs scrimmage.. night and day.. These games are "events," these games are college football what it's supposed to be..

-3rd year in a row we play the toughest non conference schedule in the entire country. Dumb

yeah, that psu game at Heinz with a sellout crowd was horrible. Lets get those games off and get some more FCS scrimmages on our schedule. Nothing screams big time football than Akron and New Hampshire games at pitt in front of 32,000 fans at noon on ESPN5.com..

-Id rather finish in the Top 10 Final Rankings. Because I had to listen about how great Penn State was because they finished Top 10 and we finished 8-5. Alabama and Clemson arent even dumb enough to try and schedule anything like this. 1 Tough non conference game, MAX

No big 10 teams on the list, not surprised, they play the easiest non-con schedules year in and year out. That makes it easier to get one of them to the final 4.

lol, yeah, because scheduling garbage OOC games will get us in the top 10.. We need to worry about not crapping the bed against UNC, giving up multiple 4th and longs on the final drives, lets stop the "up for grabs" passes by Va tech. That's what is holding us back from being respectable, not our OOC games.

-Got Miami in the Top 10 last year beating up garbage. Why do you people not want Pitt to be normal? Normal teams schedule 1 power team at most. But you people want 2 or 3 power teams then bitch when the record stinks at the end of the year.

-The Big Ten schedules garbage. Had 4 teams ranked in the Top 7 at one point last year. All you guys thought they were world beaters and the conference got unlimited hype until they all got their ass kicked in bowl season. But hey, they got ranked real high and talked about all season. Pitt got nothing for beating Penn State and a little congrats for unranked Pitt upsetting Clemson. Big wow.

Clemson scheduled Auburn OOC last year and they play South Carolina as a yearly rivalry game. That's not exactly a bunch of cupcakes. South Carolina was a better program than Clemson up until a few years ago.

Miami wasn't in top 10. they finished 20th in AP and 22nd in Coaches poll. WTF are you talking about? fans are bitching because we snatched defeat out of the hands of victory against UNC and had the worst pass defense in the history. No body was bitching about the ok state loss and the psu victory was our second best win last year..

Feel free to have an opinion but quit making up facts..

I realize these schedules were made a while ago but we now are on our 3rd year in a row with a tough non conference schedule.

-Miami was ranked 10th in the country in week 6 for beating Florida Atlantic, Florida A&M, App State, and Georgia Tech. As for making shit up, people cant read on this board. The pair of Bama fans certainly cant.

yeah then they lost 4 in a row and dropped out of the rankings. week 6 rankings? P5 programs should play P5 oppenents. I'll never understand this mindset of wanting pitt to compete in mid major football.

-Thats right. They were getting articles talking about them left and right, how great they were, how the U was back. Tons of pub. which helps with recruiting. You dont get pub when you are littered with losses. Go back to the 1980's and how over scheduling like a moron killed us. No other program in the country schedules like this yearly.

OK SC, I just disagree with the advantages of manufacturing an extra win in September against a mid major program helps in the long run.. I enjoy pitt playing P5 teams, see little benefits or entertainment from the FCS scrimmages or the lower D1 teams like an akron or rice.. Replace that Ok State loss with a win against rice and I don't see much difference now.. we aren't getting a better bowl game, recruits could care less and we still finish behind unc and va tech in the coastal..

-A 9-4 Pitt team would surely have finished ranked. Which is a selling point. The program would have won 8 games in year 1 and 9 games in year 2, which shows upward trajectory for a brand new coach. Which is a selling point. The program would have won 9 games for the 2nd time in 15 years. Which is a selling point. Pitt would have spent more weeks in the Top 25 without having that Oklahoma State loss. Which is a selling point. Miami is getting a ton of hype next year for winning 9 games as is Virginia Tech who won 10. Both played soft schedules. Pitt's hype next year is minimal outside that preseason Top 25 from ESPN. Mostly because we finished 8-5.

I'd play our rivalry game with either ped st or wvcc then pad the non conference with cupcakes till they forced me to do otherwise.

If you play a tough schedule but lose the games it does nothing for the program. If you play an easy schedule and win all the games, you are in a top 6 bowl game. History has proven this.

-Washington got into the playoffs last year playing Portland State, Idaho, and Rutgers, all at home. That's an FCS team, a scrub midmajor, and the worst P5 team in the country. If that doesnt show people you can skate into the playoffs beating up on garbage, nothing will.

-Hey that's wonderful Swervin. But Washington is laughing its ass off at guys like you. They went to the playoff and is getting tons of hype for doing it. They are loving it right now. They dont care they got slaughtered by Alabama, they were a Top 4 playoff team and the hype and articles keep pouring out how great they are. I see they are ranked in the Top 8 preseason for next year again. Must be nice to be on the radar.

Washington also beat 4 top 25 conference opponents and went 11-1 in regular season.. love how you leave that out of it.. lets worry about not crapping the bed with our conference games first, then when we can figure this out, then we should worry about ooc games. if we were psu fans, this point would be valid, doesn't hold water as fans of pitt though.

btw, Is Washington really laughing it's ass of at guys like me? Really? I doubt Washington even knows who I am..

-No they didnt. Washington State finished unranked. And how that team ever got ranked is beyond me, another creampuff scheduler that lost to an fcs team and lost to Boise State. They beat Colorado, a team that was annihilated by Oklahoma State and Michigan in two complete blowout contests.

-You just dont get it. So I wont continue.

Hope we all remember this article when the idiot posters come on board saying our schedule isnt as tough as others.

But wasnt the reverse argument true for why Ohio State got in ahead of PSU? I thought that it was specifically because of their Non-con schedule.

damn SC, facts just aren't your thing.. below are 4 wins they had against top 25 teams in conference.. you got to quit making up sh*t, I mean it. you literally live in your own world, where you make up facts to support your opinion. These games happened, below is evidence. You just cant say it didn't happen, there is too much proof. People were there, it was on TV, we have video of it actually occurring. I know it doesn't support your argument but you just cant say it didn't happen. there are rules to this..

September 30 6:00 p.m. No. 7 Stanford No. 10 Husky Stadium • Seattle, WA ESPN W 44–6

October 29 12:30 p.m. at No. 17 Utah No. 4 Rice–Eccles StadiumSalt Lake City, UT FS1 W 31–24

November 25 12:30 p.m. at No. 23 Washington State No. 6 Martin StadiumPullman, WA (109th Apple Cup) FOX W 45–17
December 2 6:00 p.m. vs. No. 9 Colorado No. 4 Levi's StadiumSanta Clara, CA (Pac-12 Championship Game) FOX W 41–10

-They played Colorado in a conference e title game, not regular season. We are talking about regular season. Wouldn't of it been a dandy had Pitt played Clemson, the defending national champion twice in the same season, Penn state the big ten champion, Oklahoma state the big 12 runner up and top 10 team, plus four coastal opponents that all won 9 games. And Marshall, a team that usually wins 10ish games. Nice going smiley, you idiot.

steel curtain, so to summarize, you want pitt to move to a non P5 conference and win 11 games against schools no one cares about. OK, well that is your right I guess. I enjoy P5 football but I guess it's not for everybody..

-To summarize I want Pitt to schedule like a normal team and not a complete asshole. I want Pitt to have a chance to be ranked and outside chance to actually make the playoffs. Id like to see Pitt win 10 games again in my lifetime. I dont want to see Pitt play 6 ranked teams per year, finish 8-5, and listen to bullshit from opposing fans that constantly schedule weaklings while competing for championships.

-To cement my point, playing Oklahoma State did absolutely nothing. We dont even recruit Oklahoma. Pitt should be playing teams in Florida and South Florida, Maryland, and Rutgers. Those are recruiting territories, free wins, and smoking Big Ten teams regardless of how bad they suck carries perception.

you want to manufacture a good record without having to beat a team with a heartbeat.. you want to try and improve the perception of pitt instead of actually improving pitt. you want to make them look better without getting better. that's what you want.

I actually like your last paragraph, I'd LOVE to play Maryland, would be more than cool with Rutgers. we play UCF so that's covered.. I agree with that part of your post..

-You cant read can you. I said play 1 good non conference team per year. 1. Which is the most any other team plays. Most Big Ten teams dont even play 1 per year. We have zero QB experience entering next year because we overscheduled like a jackass this year. Coaches understand that playing a few tuneup games gets experience for the younger players. Not throwing players into the wolfden like USC did with Max Browne starting his career off with Alabama and Stanford, 2 shutdown defenses.

misleading because some of these conferences are going to 9 conference games. Big 10 is doing 9 conference games. its the same thing as us scheduling 2 P5 OOC games when we play 8 conference games. come on SC, you're better than that.

Big ten also is getting away from FCS games, and conferences are pushing the P5 OOC game, I doubt any teams will NOT have at least 1 P5 OOC game on their schedule.

-That's fine. So Pitt gets an extra crossover game against Boston College or NC. State or Wake Forest. Big Ten teams get constant garbage additional crossovers like Purdue, Illinois, Rutgers, etc... ACC should add 2 teams and go to 9 games, Im all for it.

alright, see, now we are coming together.. I can dig this,

Not only that, four ACC teams in the top ten and NO B1G teams.
We can't really expect the BIG teams to schedule tough OOC games what with the brutal intra- conference games they face every year. Right?

I can see both sides of the argument.

On one hand, as a program, PITT needs to play a tough out of conference schedule to put butts in the seats ==== more $$$$.

On the other hand, the playoff committee rewarded teams for playing a soft out of conference schedule and it seems wise to get Ws rather than risk losing a game.
