Matt Cavanaugh
Alex Van Pelt
I have to go with Nate Peterman
Rod Rutherford
Tyler Palko
Cavanaugh surpasses them all. He ran a veer offense and was so highly regarded, his Sr year he was considered a Heisman Candidate until he broke his wrist in the 1st game.Top 5 QB with at least 5000 yards based on QBR:
Peterman
Palko
Sunseri
Rutherford
Still
Cavanugh
Van Pelt
Peterman
Rutherford
Priestlay
Gonzalez was gone after 1997. The last game at Pitt Stadium was in 1999 so that was John Turman under center.Liked Trocano and Gonzales too...all good names....
Many were “gamers”....some were just good at picking up impressive stats for themselves, but never engineered a comeback of any sort....
Didn’t Gonzales beat ND in Pitt stadiums last game? 20 years ago....yikes.
Depressing thread. Thanks a lot.Who were Pitt’s top five or so quarterbacks?
Think he had 6 or 7 TDs against Rutgers that year. He did have a great year.Gonzalez was gone after 1997. The last game at Pitt Stadium was in 1999 so that was John Turman under center.
But the season Gonzalez had in 1997 certainly ranks among the best in school history. He was excellent.
Pete Gonzales had a phenomenal senior year considering where the program was at at the time. He will always be one of my all time favorites. His presence in the pocket was outstanding. He wasn't quick or fast but he had an amazing ability to avoid a sack by shuffling a step or two to his right or left while keeping his eyes downfield.Pete's senior year is more impressive than anything we've had since. If you understand his circumstances what he was working with, the scheme employed, and the competition, it's an easy choice.
Cavanaugh, Rutheford, Palko, and Van Pelt are no brainers using my criteria. Congemi is my pick for the fifth. That said, tough to cobble a list without due consideration to those who played prior to 1960.Pete Gonzales had a phenomenal senior year considering where the program was at at the time. Lytle was probably the most gifted QB we’ve had. Guy had great arm, good size and was an excellent athlete. I always wondered if we could implant Pistol Pete’s work ethic into Lytle’s body, we’d have had an All American Qb under WaltGreat thread.
Dont overlook Lytle. He had a cup of coffee in the NFL despite playing for probbaly the worst pitt team I ever saw. (I was still in high school for 96)
How do you judge this? Most wins? NFL futures? Just our subjective opinion?
I will go since I have followed pitt.
Pistol Pete had one great year, resulting in 6 win.
Lytle won 2 games made the NFL.
Turman/Priestly kind of blend together for me as neither really stepped up.
Rutherford benefits from Larry Fitz and that Fade pass to a boatload of TDs.
Palko without looking probbaly has the most wins as he played 3 years correct?
Who comes next?
Savage/Stull?
Tino
Voytik
Peterson was great for a 1.5 years but probbaly loses luster because of his NFL flameout.
Couple forgotten transfers then Kenny
I would say Palko, Peterman, Rutherford, Stull, Gonzalez, and Savage/Pickett honorable mention

A good senior season and I think he moves ahead of Tino and still and into the groupings of players like Nate. Still below palko, Rod, AVP, congemi but definitely in that 3rd pairing.Really shocked “Kenny Heisman” didn’t make anyone’s list. Those three years really flew by.
Pistol Pete languished on the bench for 4 years under Majors II. I was at Notre Dame in '93 when Majors blew his redshirt by putting him into a blowout late in the game. He redshirted later and was going to go on with his life when Walt talked him into staying a 5th year. He's been one of my all time Panthers ever since. Remember 4th and 17 to Jake Hoffart.Great thread.

Pretty sad state of affairs when we think of Congemi being #5. He had 1 good year - 1983. 2 awful years - '84 and '85 ( yeah... probably injured but still... the guy had accuracy issues circa Kenny Pickett '18 ). '86 he had a few great games but was injured (again) and didn't finish the season. I think this puts Peterman or Pete over him.
I somehow forgot Palko. I would put him 4th and bump Priestley, but he was a very solid QB for sure.Solid list. David Priestley could throw a great deep ball.
Good memory thanks. I have a poster hanging in my man cave, and was trying to remember when it was....Gonzalez was gone after 1997. The last game at Pitt Stadium was in 1999 so that was John Turman under center.

Who could forget Priestley's 99 yard draw play in the first game ever at Heinz Field? I think we were playing East Tennessee State? Not the most fleet of foot QB but he had about a 10 yard gap in the line to run through.
I dont believe it was 99 yards ,but the rest is correct. I seem to think it was in the 80 yard range.
Tom Yewcic....absolutely saved our bacon during the national championship run.Who were Pitt’s top five or so quarterbacks?
I disagree. Congemi was playing pretty darn well when he broke his back at Syracuse. I don't think stats tell the whole story as to how competitive Congemi was.IMO - Congemi is the most overrated QB.
55% - Career Completions
6467 - Career Yardage
42-TD and 32-INT
I forgot about that. Don't know the exact yardage but that field opened up like the Red Sea and I kept waiting for someone to catch him but they never did.Who could forget Priestley's 99 yard draw play in the first game ever at Heinz Field? I liked Lytle but he was on such a terrible team.Lytle was probably the most gifted QB we’ve had. Guy had great arm, good size and was an excellent athlete. I always wondered if we could implant Pistol Pete’s work ethic into Lytle’s body, we’d have had an All American Qb under Walt

Joe Flacco. Nothing else needs to be said.
I think congemi and Dickerson fall in the over rated categories. Both surrounded by sick talent so their inefficiencies were masked but in reality, both were not really good college qbs.His ineptitude is on full display on YT: '84 BYU and South Carolina. '85: NC State.
