** I presume I’ve had the pleasure of watching about 25 “Blue Gold” games in my days as a Pitt Hoops fan. Of those, I believe this one was probably one of the most enjoyable to watch.

** Perhaps this was so because there were so many new players to put an eye on. Or maybe it had something to do with seeing some strong work from returnees.

** Or maybe it had something to do with the pace of the game where Panther offensive players got into shots quickly and fluidly. Along the same lines, our Hoopers were also pushing the ball nicely on the break at times.

** It would be a mistake to suggest the Panthers looked like an offensive juggernaut though. In fact, it could even be problematic that the Panthers offensive sets got into shots pretty easily as this could mean there was little defense. In a Blue-Gold game, it’s tough to tell.

** What wasn’t tough to tell was that Mike Young, James Robinson and Johnathan Milligan were clearly head and shoulders above everyone else offensively on this day.

** Mike looked pretty darn impressive scoring his points with finishes in close, or doing work off on the dribble. Speaking of working with the dribble, Mike also did his share of work moving the ball from foul like to foul line on the break. And one of his drives to hole late in the game ended with a strong one handed power slam which was the game’s best highlight.

** Personally, I still do not believe that the lack of a “true center” was Pitt biggest issue last year. However, allowing Mike to do work with the dribble instead of just in the paint unlocks a new way he can help the Panthers.

** Among the Pitt fans I’ve spoken to over the past several months, there seems to be a consensus of skepticism that James has another level in him. Hopefully his performance today is a first piece of evidence that this skepticism is wrong.

** Simply stated, James was really good and dominated the game from the point. He made passes on the break, got into the lane, got shots for others and hit his shots at a high rate.

** Two plays by James were particularly noteworthy. In the first half, he flashed to the foul line and accepted an entry pass with defenders surrounding him. From there, he did a full pivot until finding Rafel Maia in the low post. His last play was his best play however. With his Gold team down one in the final seconds, James drove into the lane, drew two defenders and made a fine pass down to Alonzo Nelson-Ododa for the winning score with .6 seconds remaining. James did turn it over more than we’ve grown accustomed, but that’s a tradeoff we’ll take if it means he’s making more plus plays as he did today.

** At the very least, Johnathan Milligan easily showed that he’s a very capable player who will have a role with this year’s team. Whether or not he will shoot and score like he did today is yet to be seen. But he’s quick and fluid and can create some nice things for himself off of the dribble. Although his 3-6 shooting from three was a pleasure, his best shot was a driving, floating, runner he made late in the second half. That’s a tough shot he made look easy.

** What could be quite exciting will be seeing Milligan and Robinson on the court together at the same time in the 1-2 spots. It’s hard not to think we’ll see this lineup at times, anyway.

** As for the rest of the backcourt, Cam Johnson and Damon Wilson were both solid contributors. Cam played well, and took very good shots, but his three ball just wasn’t falling. His shot looks a little quicker and higher, and with his height, he should be able to get it off just about at any time. If he can hit threes at 35% rate or better, we may really have something.

** Damon plays a very active and tough style game. As a guard, he’s able get dirty inside and in the lane, but he’s not a float-on-the perimeter type, which is more of where you’ll find Cam.

** Sterling Smith rebounded better than any of our guards, but did very little to distinguish himself otherwise. With the competition that going on in the backcourt, he’ll need to show more to get minutes.

** Chris Jones was unable to play because of injury, which if I understood him correctly in the autograph line, is still a problem from his injury this summer.

** Sheldon Jeter and Jamel Artis played together as sort of the “interchangeable” three and four on their Blue team. Both did the things that made them successful last year, meaning Sheldon hit a couple of nice mid-range shots, and Jamel did some good things with dribble penetration leading to shots for others. However, he wasn’t hitting his shots like he did last year when he performed at nearly an all ACC level.

** I’m wondering if Dixon will go with a “5-by-committee” approach this season, instead of truly settling on one player there. Alonzo Nelson Ododa was likely the best of the group today, especially with his rebounding. It’s also worth noting that ANO looks the part of a center the best of any of them, but we’ll have to see how productive he’ll be.

** Rafel Maia looks a little more like a finesse player, and had two nice up and under finishes. However, I would have like to see him do more on the boards. He was also wearing something of a flack jacket under his jersey, but it did not seem to affect his game.

** I suspect Roselle Nix will be a fan favorite before he’s done at Pitt. But his game is about half finished and he still needs work on his conditioning. He does move well for his size, but if I had to guess, he’s headed for a redshirt.

** I don’t know if Dixon plans to utilize Ryan Luther at the five spot, of if this was just more of a function of balancing the Blue-Gold rosters. However, despite defending in the paint, he did more of his offensive work near the perimeter (including 2-2 from three). It was sort of a mixed bag performance for Ryan, as along with hitting shots, he also threw three passes to no one.

** As I mention earlier, it will be difficult to know where the Panthers are this season until we get any kind of an idea about defense. The only thing I can tell you about our defense today is that I saw more zone played today than I can ever remember seeing from Dixon in these scrimmages.

** Offensively, there were a number of new sets, with more screens coming across sets as opposed to screens coming from the post.

** The autograph sessions were great as usual and it was nice meeting the new guys. I also got the chance to speak to Ontario Lett who is a whole lot of fun and would seem to be a great addition to the staff. Finally, I spent some time speaking to Coach Dixon and I can assure you that he made good eye contact!

** There was plenty to be encouraged about from today, but not enough to get excited about just yet. Overall though, it was another nice event, even if less than 1,000 people were there to see it. I’m just glad I was one of them.

Solid post as always DT.
My quick 2 cents is all of the new guys are a significant upgrade over those who are gone (Cam Wright, Newkirk, Uchebo, Randall) and those who are returning look more confident in their abilities.

Thanks for the report DT. This was the first scrimmage I had to miss as the Mrs. is having a hard time walking great distances.

Sorry to have missed you. Give my best to the Mrs.

Good stuff. How did Milligan look driving the ball?

Pretty effortless actually, but we were running sets off of screen more than driving from the perimeter.

Actually, the guy who might have looked best driving the ball may have been Mike.

How do Robinson and Artis look physically? Have they lost weight, look quicker?

I was sitting with Harve74 and Cabe23 and both said they thought Jamel looked like he lost weight. I'm not sure.

I don't think James looked different physically but he played with a confidence that perhaps somehow made him look quicker, if only a touch.

Dixon in his post scrimmage presser attributed last seasons end of season slump to his bigs being worn down over the course of the season due to lack of frontcourt depth. He said he believes he has solved that problem with the addition of Maia, ANO and Nix.

http://www.pittsburghpanthers.com/collegesportslive/?media=509576

Also, he mentioned that he thought Nix was going to be a very good player once he improves his conditioning further. I took that as a hint that Nix might redshirt--but maybe I am reading too much into the remark.

Dixon said Chris Jones had sprained his ankle in practice the day before the B/G scrimmage and said it wasn't a big deal.

Great to get a post on the B/G game by someone that was actually there but... if you want more insight you really should listen to the Dixon post-game interview over on the official site.

For instance, as far as Sterling Smith needing to 'show more'... Dixon said (twice) that he has looked real good in practice but just didn't have it today. So, it appears he has already been 'showing more'.

Another thing.... Dixon said Milligan and Wilson have a ways to go with their defense. It was also interesting re Dixon's comments on Milligan playing the 'off guard' (SG) slot and that... he is a natural scorer both outside shooting, mid-range, and taking it to the hoop. My line on this one.... Milligan might indeed be better at SG and a significant scorer there.... just needs to get his D up.

Dixon said that the best three players in practice so far have been Young, Luther and Jeter... and that Jeter has 'separated himself from the rest, including the other bigs' (including Young and Luther). This is REALLY interesting.

He also said that Maia has only gotten 4 practices in and... my line... hasn't really been able to integrate himself with the rest of the team yet. He is definitely needed.

Also, an interesting comment from Mike Young in his post-game interview.... that there really hasn't been any kind of lineup yet. He said you can tell who is gonna play but you don't know who is gonna start and how many minutes players are gonna get. Dixon has been working in getting solid defense to start with. Dixon also mentioned MY at both the 4 and the 5 so we may indeed be seeing MY at C at times this coming year.

Interesting comment from DT... that Dixon was using Jeter and Artis at PF and SF and swapping them O and D. I have been harping on this for six months (lol) and Dixon said he was doing that at the end of last year but I never noticed it. In any case.... the squad was split here so it remains to be seen what direction he decides to go in.

Lastly.... always dangerous to place too much re what happens in a B/G game. Some players seem to do well in games like this but.... it doesn't hold up into the season.

Couple thoughts - I only saw the 1st half of the men's scrimmage:

--J. Milligan looked very good shooting the ball, but he is really, really thin. Can see why he may have trouble playing defense. But he is quick.

--I figured it was killing Jamie to not be involved in the team huddles as he let his assistants coach the teams and sat at the end of the scorer's table. And sure enough, at the last break in the action before the half, he finally went to each team's bench and put in his 2 cents.

--I was impressed with ANO. Looked like he belonged.

--I was surprised by Rafael Maia -- was not expecting that type of player and that wide body - or maybe it was the vest, which I hadn't noticed.

--Mike Young certainly stood out; I thought Cam Johnson looked promising, as did the shooting of James Robinson. ANO, Young, Artis, Milligan and Robinson could be an interesting lineup. Perhaps they were playing more zone to kind of cover for Milligan on the defensive end???

--I don't know basketball, but I would guess that Nix red-shirts. He had one nice tip in, but just seems raw - like he needs time to get more comfortable. (In warm-ups, he threw the ball against the backboard and then tried to dunk the rebound - both times he hit the back of the rim and the ball bounced out past the foul line. He's one big dude - lots of mass to get off the floor.)

Go Pitt.

My thoughts:

- Young looks "free." He can be the player he wants to be now that he's at the 4. He played facing the basket a lot, a lot of perimeter stuff and, quite honestly, looked 1st Team All ACC good. He just looked fantastic.

- Artis didnt have a great day but looked to be in great shape and more athletic.

- James looked more assertive and was "playmaking" a little bit. He looked good but I'm still not getting my hopes up that he will playmake during the season. Its a good sign though.

- Milligan and Wilson impressed me the most out of the new guys. Milligan has that sneaky scoring ability, something we haven't seen. I mean he gets buckets in different ways. Jamie said in the post-game that he has a scorer's mentality and is a "natural scorer" BUT pointed out he needs work on his D twice. Milligan isnt the savior but I kinda expect him to maybe go 2 weeks without scoring or playing much but then go for 18 off the bench and help us win a game. His game reminds me of Russ Smith. No, Im not saying he's anywhere near as good but he has that way of getting into the lane, floaters, mid-range, just getting buckets as I said. A little unorthodox but effective. If he can play Dixon Defense, he could be very good.

Wilson didnt jump off the page stat-wise but he impresses me. He doesnt appear to be a good shooter but is also a guy who likes to make plays, get in the lane, make stuff happen. I think he starts at the 2 with backup minutes at the 1.

- Smith didnt do much but Jamie was high on him in the postgame and went out of his way to talk about him. Said he was most consistent. To me, he looks like a "designated shooter."

- I think the most surprising thing to me was that Luther looks like he's going to get minutes.......at the 5. ANO is the starter there and looked serviceable, not great, but good enough. Luther is definitely ahead of Maia though Dixon said Maia just started practicing. I thought Maia looked out of shape. Luther looked good and at the end of the game he was on the floor while Maia and Nix were not.

- Dixon was very high on Jeter on the post game, said he's a 4 now. Jamie kept talking about the big guys as a group of 6 (counting Jeter, not Artis).

- Nix looked OK. Could get up and down the floor. Has a little skill but will probably RS. Jamie said he's behind the others. I think a year with Tim Beltz is what he needs. He may be really good by the time he's a 5th year senior. He has potential.

Here's my minute breakdown:

PG: Robinson (32) Wilson (8)
SG: Wilson (15) Milligan (15) Jones (10)
SF: Artis (30) Jones (10)
PF: Young (25) Jeter (15)
C: ANO (15) Luther (13) Young (7), Maia (5)

RS: Nix

I think Smith and Johnson are going to get minutes but dont know where it will come from. My hunch is that Milligan's D will keep him off the floor and we will complain about that all season on this board.

All in all, I thought they looked like a good team again and Jamie was mostly pleased during the presser.

We are still gonna have to see about Artis at SF. DT said Artis and Jeter were playing Interchangeable at PF and SF... swapping O and D. So, this is one we will have to continue to keep an eye on.

- James looked more assertive and was "playmaking" a little bit. He looked good but I'm still not getting my hopes up that he will playmake during the season. Its a good sign though.

Robinson had been playing continuously since getting out of HS... and was clearly running out of gas last year. Dixon made the point multiple times in his post-game that players had to play too many minutes last year and were running of gas. Should not have this problem this year. Robinson, could have an outstanding year.

- Milligan and Wilson impressed me the most out of the new guys. Milligan has that sneaky scoring ability, something we haven't seen. I mean he gets buckets in different ways. Interesting that Dixon said that Milligan looked better at the 2 than he has at the 1. If he's a scorer he should be better at SG because he then does not have to concern himself about setting the offense, etc, that a PG has to deal with. My guess is he will be a scorer off the bench at SG. Probably not that many minutes early on needing time to get his feet wet but... down the road you never know.

Wilson is the backup PG... spelling Robinson. He will not start at SG over Smith/Jones.. and probably not play SG at all. Milligan will be 3rd man in at PG.

We in fact should not be surprised about Luther and Jeter amongst top players right now. Minutes will be at a premium this year and they were looking like the odd men out. So, they got their butts into gear in no uncertain terms and... are leading the pack. Only time will tell if they will be able to sustain it.

Interesting that Dixon had ANO and Maia both on the same team... along with Young... which meant Luther played C on the other team... spelled by Nix. In the post-game he talked about Luther at the 4... but maybe you are right that he will be playing the 5. But, lets not put him out there against the likes of Okafor and Christmas, both of whom ate him alive at C last year.

- Dixon was very high on Jeter on the post game, said he's a 4 now. Jamie kept talking about the big guys as a group of 6 (counting Jeter, not Artis).

Yeah, he keeps talking about the group of 6 but it is unclear who the 6th man is, Artis or Jeter. Included Artis not Jeter when he listed the 6 previously, but now says Jeter has been playing mostly the 4. Maybe he is thinking of the 'swapping' scheme' with Artis/Jeter at PF/SF as the 6th big.

- Nix looked OK. Could get up and down the floor. Has a little skill but will probably RS. Jamie said he's behind the others. I think a year with Tim Beltz is what he needs. He may be really good by the time he's a 5th year senior. He has potential.

The thing that impressed me about Milligan is that he seemed efficient and under control. He scored 14 pts without really forcing anything. One concern is that he is very slight. He may not be able to absorb a lot of physical contact.

ANO is an impressive looking guy. Hearing his reputation was as a shot blocker, I expected someone built like Birch. He looks more like Biggs, and has a nice looking mid-range jumper and some offensive skill and looks like he can play some physical defense.

I was surprised DT said that Maia looks like more of a finesse player. He looks like a strong guy, in more of a work muscle than gym muscle way. I am not sure what kind of injury he had, but his torso seemed pretty heavily wrapped. He may not have wanted to do a lot of banging if he his ribs were hurting.

I agree that Artis looks noticeably thinner. Maybe he felt he needs less bulk at SF than at PF.

Johnson's shooting was off, but he looks like he could be an important weapon. His shot looks good, he can get it off quickly, doesn't need much room and should be able to shoot over just about anyone guarding him.

Nix is huge, appears to have good hands and a nice touch, and moves ok, but looks kind of mechanical and unathletic. He probably should redshirt and may look a lot smoother after a year of practicing against these guys.

Perhaps I should have said that Maia doesn't look like a bruiser, per se. I didn't mean to imply that he wasn't strong however. Nonetheless, I sure would have liked to see him flash a little more of those 10 RPG type skills.

Thanks DT and other for the reports. One thing is exciting, it is like a box of chocolates this year, we really don't know what we are going to get. So it will be really interesting and hopefully fun to see who emerges and how this team is put together.

Zara:

Artis is a 3. You have to come to grips with that. I dont know what DT saw but I didnt see Artis play any 4 at all on offense.

It was clear from Jamie's "Group of 6" comment that he considers Jeter a 4 and not Artis since since he specifically said Jeter was a PF now.

SMF -- you are correct in all regards about Artis being a three. However, when Jamel and Sheldon are on the court together, they following similar principles in the motion offense. With this, you'll see Jamel operating at times in the paint, and Sheldon on the perimeter, and vice versa. But like you said, his "position" was always the "3."
