I hate to post this now and it’s obviously just a rumor, but this would be so effing Pitt. Build a powerhouse in a quickly growing sport and lose your head coach just as the sports is breaking out. I wouldn’t trust Greene to make a big move as a replacement either in the NIL era.

Hopefully they choose someone else.

This is old news.

When Karch moved from the Women's National Team to coach the Men's National Team, Dan's name was mentioned, along with several others, including from the new professional leagues.

This rumor has been floating around Volley Talk message board for a while. Sunderland is the first person of substance to suggest this.

Well every coach would want to leave their program in better shape than when they started. And while it would stink for us, it would be a great thing for him. And hopefully the succession would be seamless and the program will keep humming.

Is that really a full-time job though or just random tournaments?

Give him the Randy Waldrum package where he can do both 😉
National team won't allow that. It is a full time gig. But right now, it might be a sizeable pay cut to take that gig unless they match Pitt. He's got a new facility coming on line at Pitt...program is just starting to hum and get sizeable crowds. He'd have to listen but I don't know if it would be something he would automatically take. He's got a court named after him in the future if he stays at Pitt and college volleyball is now higher profile for all but once every four years. But he also has a new boss so who knows how that is going to go.

But you don't just replace a coach like that seamlessly. Howland->Dixon transitions are rare. It would be totally a Pitt thing to bust through with a national title and then immediately lose the coach and have the program sink back to mediocrity. Shades of '76. I've probably been a Pitt fan too long.

To your point about salaries:

The head coach of the USA women's national volleyball team earns between $350,000 and $375,000 per year.

Volleyball head coach Dan Fisher, who has led the Panthers to seven straight NCAA Tournaments, four straight Elite Eights and three straight Final Four appereances, made $614,923, one of the highest earners for his position in the country in 2023.

That is awesome! Good for Fish! Another thing, I’m sure 614K is due to ACC championships and Final 4’s…so he’d have to keep winning to earn those dollars…but 614k is comfortable in Pittsburgh. Where would he live for USA Vball? Colorado Springs? California? Colorado Springs is about the same cost of living. If he were based in LA he’d have to be up around 1,000,000.

California, his native state

John Cook has to be loving this hot rumor right now. It's a distraction for Pitt...their coaches, their team, and their fans. Yes....the coach merry go round is what it is.....but the timing frankly sucks.

It's not really new. There was some mention of the possibility after the AVCA gathering. It hasn't affected the team at all, so far. D1 sports are much more transactional now so it's part of the gig.

Couple of things about the rumor. Fish has coached the development teams so he is well thought of by USA Volleyball. Could he cut a deal to do both? Would he even want to? I don't know. I do think that Pitt would land on its feet. There are some outstanding young coaches out there. Despite the success, there is also a bit of a mess with the women's national team. You'll see a huge turnover soon regardless of who takes it over.

While I would never wish anything but the best for Fisher, I have no problem with him staying here. I would imagine he would be taking a healthy salary cut coaching the national team, wouldn’t he? Would he have to uproot his family who has spent formative years here in Pittsburgh?

Again, he may have the best job in all of volleyball right now, especially if they win a natty.
