Game thread

McGowens turns the ball over way too much he is completely out of control. How many dumb turnovers can you continue to make every game.

Like I’ve saud to everyone else, feel free not to watch or post.
People are allowed to be critical of this team and be annoyed by the constant turnovers and lack of shot making on this team. What do you want us to say this team is playing great and it’s okay to keep making the same dumb mistakes.

Every time we have a chance to close the gap, it's met with a silly turnover.

I want you not to say the coach sucks and turn on the staff in year one. It would also be nice if people could understand how big of a rebuild this is.

Certainly not giving up on Capel, I really think he’s perfect for Pitt. But I thought we’d be much better tonight. Offense was pitiful and defense went through horrific stretches as well. I thought we’d win 3-4 games this year after that start, but doesn’t look like it now. This was very discouraging.

You don’t recover from the Stallings dumpster fire in one year. They need better players all through this roster. Just have to be patient and allow Capel time to bring in more talent.

Another game where the best thing we can say is Pitt didn’t quit and played hard in the 2nd half. Getting old saying this same thing gane in and game out. This team has to win at least one more game this season. Can’t end this season on a 14 game losing streak and approaching 20 losses.

Maybe they are passing and shooting well because we aren’t defending well.

Defense is half the game.

Having said this, our defense has not been very good but our offense has been atrocious.
Trey threw up that air ball from three. After that he did not even look to shoot. No one is willing to shoot a jumper. We keep forcing passes that aren't there. We keep forcing drives that aren't there. Need to run some offense. Move the ball. Shoot when you have a shot and drive when it is open.

Trey needs to be taking double figures in shots. He needs to shoot till some go in and he gains some confidence. On this team he is needed to score. We can't win if he doesn't.

No sense running an offense thru a point guard or forward when no one can catch a pass and/or make a layup or even make an open jump shot. Coachable talented basketball players are needed. Experience and maturation is needed just as much with this roster.

Absolutely true. We had it down to 10 (could have been 9 - missed ft), Clemson hadn't scored in forever and Trey makes a stupid attempt to steal the ball from Reed. Reed is the first or second best foul shooter in the ACC. That was not a time to give Clemson points.

It has been a really big rebuild for some time

Absolutely. We will have a chance once we again have experienced, ACC level upperclassmen

Who doesn't understand that? The coach's job is to develop and improve the players on the roster. That isn't happening.

Will Capel win more with better future talent? Yes.
Is it a bad sign that there's been zero improvement in just about any single player on this team? Yes.

No matter who Capel signs, he's not going to have Duke talent, so coaching and developing 4-year players is still going to be critical for us to have any sustained success.

I’m not sure there is anyone who can shoot a jumper.

It sure would have been nice if we could have kept Luther, Carr and Stewart and maybe gotten thru to Stevenson. The team would be better. Almost total rebuilds two years in a row are hard on an old man.

Can't wait until we have experienced players.

For next year, guess I will have to settle for more guys that can play.

Those three were gone the moment Stallings was canned. Nothing Capel was going to do about. I agree that we’d be better with them, but that’s not a choice.

The only choices are Stallings Carr and Stewart or Capel Xavier and Trey.

I happily take the latter.

Agree with what you say. My main point is two years of total rebuilds are hard on an old man (me)

I hear you. I’m a little younger I suppose than you (but my arthritic hip feels your age) but they aren’t any easier on me I suspect.

I think this season has been much harder than last. Last season was so bad that I didn’t even care. But this one has really hurt with how bad the bottom has fallen out.

Having said this, our defense has not been very good but our offense has been atrocious.

Once they got past the first seven minutes our defense was actually pretty good. Over the last 33 minutes of the game Clemson shot 33% from the field and 24% from three. But this team isn't good enough to give up 8-10 from the field, 5-5 from three in the first seven minutes of the game (or really, in any seven minute stretch of a game) and overcome that.

Honestly, I think it was only a couple minute stretch where the defense really broke down. The first 3 or 4 threes were contested. They hit the ridiculous one as the shot clock expired, and then they fell apart for the next 4 minutes after that.

Essentially everything went wrong in that first several minutes. Couldn’t score, and Clemson hit everything whether they were defender well or not.

That was a halftime take of course. And another way of saying “not very good defense” is a little below average or a C- grade per se. While I agree the defense was better after the first 7 minutes, I’d still say the sum total of the defense was a C- for the half when Clemson shot over 50% from the field.

But we both agree that the offense this day was far worse.

Well next time at halftime you should pay attention to important things, like all those athletes with 3.0 or better grade point averages!

Or the woman sitting in the next section over from me wearing the tiger suit. Note that I didn't say the little girl, I said the woman.

Fans emotions aside, this is indeed the harder of the years to see because of possible impact on the team psyche. Winning just a couple in the stretch, such as maybe that VT game a couple weeks, only one more W in the column but something to hold on to for the offseason. These young guys who have to return now will be heading into the long offseason with two months of grief on their psyches. Maybe it make them pissed off and determined in the offseason ... or just give an irreversible sense of failure that impresses the losing culture. And for finishing on recruiting, having even a couple wins to point at in the stretch would have prevented some negative recruiting by our rivals... never good to give a rival a soundbite that we lost our last 16 games, or whatever.
