Gayle Sayers

Was a great one hampered by too many injuries.

R.I.P. Kansas Comet.

An amazing draft that day for the Bears with Sayers and Butkus being picked successively. Butkus was picked 3rd, a pick acquired from the Steelers, and then Sayers was picked 4th.

Wow. This is one player from an earlier era that I believe could be just as successful today as 50 years ago. Size, speed, vision. Ability to cut at full speed. Overcame a knee injury that ended most careers in the 1960’s. “Give me 18 inches of daylight. That’s all I need.” Rest in peace Comet. Give Picc a hug.

To non-football fans he will always be remembered from the movie “Brian’s Song”

Being way too young to seen in him in his playing days out of all the old timers who’s highlights I watched he was the one offensive player I was always the most amazed of. Truly one of the greats of this game. RIP Gale

Simply by RB stats, his injury ending career doesn't match his ability.
The game then was much much different. Teams lined up to stop the run....
Few RBs were receiver threats out of the backfield...
Kickoffs didn't travel 8 yards deep and punters thought "hang time" applied to how long their hangovers lasted. They punted low and they punted often.
I bet some folks never heard the expression "triple threat"....it really means a guy who could do it all.
Look up the term and you will see Gayle Sayers' photo.
RIP
