Idunno, but my father always mentioned around this time of year about how his 1922 W&J Presidents played Cal in the only scoreless Rose Bowl game.

He also used to cheer, "W&J was W&J when Pitt was only WUP. W&J will be W&J when Pitt is gobbled up!" when he saw I was watching a Pitt game on TV.

lol, I guess what I wrote could be interpreted more than one way. My father graduated W&J in 1955, and I meant "his 1922 W&J Presidents" to refer to his school in general and not his particular graduating class. I don't know how much Pitt and W&J played against each other in the 1950's, but he and all his college buddies knew that WUP cheer.

While that is true, Pitt was already WUP, a school with university status, when W&J was still WC and JC...that is two separate schools: Washington College and Jefferson College. They didn't combine to form W&J until 1865, 46 years after Pittsburgh Academy "became" WUP, and then it took a US Supreme Court case to actually get the consolidation of WC & WJ to go forward 6 years later.

W&J was definitely one of Pitt's earliest chief athletic rivals, and vice versa, primarily through the 1910s and into the 1920s.

Russ Stein was the hero in that game for W&J, brother Herb was a star for Pitt.

They both went on to lucrative pro careers.
