Elite programs can surround a decent to good QB with 4/5 stars and win big, but the quickest path for non-elite schools is to find an elite, college QB and surround him with good talent.

We beat 'Ville last year and this year with Jackson they have a chance for the Final 4. Pat White at WV. The QB at Houston. UCF when they were good. Cincy had a bunch of really good QB's when they had their run. Memphis went from nothing to a very good team. There are a lot of examples. The key is finding an elite college QB.

We have had good enough QB coaching here since Walt to develop someone into an elite college qb.

Palko would have been elite under Walt if he wasn't fired.

This is what I've been saying. We can blame a lot of things on the 30 plus year streak of mediocrity but the lack of a "star QB" is probably the biggest reason we haven't had that ONE magical year that just about every single program has had in that same stretch.

Since 1982, our best multi-year QBs have been:

1. Van Pelt
2. Palko
3. Lytle
4. Rutherford

Then we had guys have pretty good seasons on flawed teams in their only year as a starter (Gonzalez, Savage).

Not that NFL success is a must but in what has traditionally been a pro-style offense, you normally need a future NFL QB unless you are Alabama with stars all over the field.

A star QB at Pitt makes up for a lot of shortcomings. For example, this year, we have a bad WR core. Well, put Tom Savage on this team, not that he's a star but he's good enough, and this team probably goes 11-1.

For the life of me, I cant believe we couldn't luck into a star college QB, you know a lightly recruited guy who becomes a star like Joe Flacco......oh wait.

I loved the way Palko played, but he was not an elite college QB. We have not had one since Marino. We have had good ones, but not elite. An elite, college QB is someone who can make an elite play with his arm, and/or legs. An elite play is a possible TD on a simple defensive breakdown.

Every year I would bring in the best QB prospect I could land, and 1 HS QB who is a great athlete, but may be overlooked as a college QB due to height or maybe others project him for another position. It makes no sense to leave yourself shorthanded at the most important position. If the great athlete does not pan out at QB, then he can switch positions.
