I said at the time that it was a really stupid decision for him to leave such a cushy job like DC at OSU for BC, one of the worst P5 jobs. I think he's a good coach and good recruiter but that's almost an impossible job. Every decade or so they luck into an NFL QB (Flutie, Hasselbeck x 2, Ryan, etc) and they do well while they have that QB. The rest of the time, they are 6-6 or worse. Hafley is going to be fired and with Duzz possibly going to Michigan State, you'd have to think that Hafley would have been the Pitt HC had he stayed at OSU this whole time while waiting for the right job. Duzz stayed at MSU a long time waiting for the right job. He said that. Sometimes you cant just jump at the 1st P5 job that opens. Hafley will become a well-paid DC again but he probably wont get another P4 job.

Some coaches just aren't cut out to be HCs.

you said he was a very good HC, he sucks and will be fired soon. you were wrong, take the loss.

Shoulda listened to me. The guy is an incredible coach (and recruiter). Heather better start finding ways to pay for him. Sure, he probably has his sights set on bigger jobs but the wife is a Pitt fan. You have to try

He will be 4-0 next week, something Pitt hasnt done in 21 years and has only done twice in 39 years. No, he may not lead us to the CFP but he is very clearly an upgrade over Narduzzi. He is a former assistant and his wife is a former Pitt Athletics employee. He may be aiming for a program bigger than Pitt but he is the best coach we can reasonably get. If not him, its throwing darts against the board to pick a MAC coach or coordinator hoping to get lucky so we can break out of this 40 year hellish existence.

Most people on here thought he was a terrible assistant coach. A decade later, he is on the verge of coaching in the NC as the DC of a blue blood and taking a Power 5 head job. Unfortunately, he was 1-2 years ahead of schedule because with his Pitt ties and Pitt wife, he coulda been what we...

A good coach doesn't recruit players from the Little Giants to play on the o-line.

If and when we do need to hire a new coach, it needs to be a young offensive guy.

Or any actual coaching for that matter. But it is definitely a valuable talent to be able to close the deal on the recruits of superior coaches (or even Wanny 😁).

A little less valuable now that sacks of cash are more necessary than ever before. Enough cash and a mumbling Gastropod like Chryst with a 250,000 NIL check likely easily trumps a smooth-talking Hafley holding only $175,000. Yeah I know…in the time I typed this, these amounts aren’t even anything anymore. Another reason why we can’t even sniff a good prep QB

that's what annoys me. we are all wrong on here, anyone that makes any sort of prediction or thinks they know something..

so what? you said this recruit will suck or be great, and he didnt. you thought we'd kill cincy and we didnt, you thought Kevin Stallings was gonna get us to the tourney, again, so what.

Own it, have fun with it, laugh at yourself and move on.

If any of us could predict the future in sports, we wouldnt be on a pitt message board, we'd be Biff in Back to the Future 2, trying to kill marty on top of our own casino hotel rooftop..

There were a lot of people here who had him anointed as the end all be all before he coached a game up there.

He will have made a few mill at BC and when he gets fired he'll get a nice severance too. Then he'll roll into a decent DC position that pays him $700K+. I can think of worse career paths.

Cruzer

I know they wont do this but if Pitt had a HC opening, I'd hire some D3 coach for 100K/year and use the savings to pay each player $100K/year and land a Top 10 class.

or better yet for him, he can take his buyout money and take a job as a "quality control" guy for Saban for coaching minimum wage (since the buyout agreement typically contains an offset/credit back for subsequent salary) , while building his resume back up, and ultimately getting another HC job at a mid-major or DC job at a P5 heavy.

When I die and come back to this earth I'd like to return as a P5 head coach.

That is humorous but fun to consider, given our reality is rather “forlorn” as Walt’s agent would say (likely from the seedy office in his insurance agency where he likely retreated to after getting Walt into Stanford).

Problem with that idea, or any, err, innovative idea like that is Pitt would only be setting, possibly re-setting, the basement of the market and the big programs would merely readjust and offer more. Those schools wouldn’t just shrug and say “oh well, Pitt football is back, baby … they got us now.”

And even if the other programs did stand pat with money, they wouldn’t just let us get away with outspending them. It would be like with SMU getting ratted by Texas and TAM in the 80s.

Hafley is an easy guy to root for, but a bad bad head coach. He wants to be everyone's best friend and can't make a hard decision. I'm a BC fan and our team is one of the least disciplined teams I've ever seen, it's laughable honestly.

People can lecture us on how hard of a job it is, but the facts are that we've been at least bowl eligible all but 4 seasons this century, and now things have completely torpedoed in the wrong direction under his stewardship.

I'll give you the other ones, but anyone who thought that Kevin Stallings was going to get us to the tourney was completely delusional!
If you give him 5 years, of course he would. He literally had Vanderbilt in the tournament when Pitt hired him. In fact, the next year, the Vandy team mostly recruited by Stallings went back to the NCAA tourney.

Be awful

It wasnt Walts agent, it was Bill Walsh that called the city "forlorn".

Anybody been to SF lately?

Played hopscotch over human poop on the way to Ghiardelli Square.

SMF...Just another one of you "classic" posts. First of all, Pat Narduzzi isn't going anywhere. Why in the world would the man want to go backwards in his career at his age and with the contract he has in place at Pitt? Secondly, he has established himself at Pitt and has become one of the ACC's top coaches. Sorry, big swing and a miss on that one. It's right up there with the soccer players being able to run a marathon.
In regards to Hafley, why would Pitt want him? If he's such a good coach and recruiter as you say, then why has his teams sucked at BC? The reality of it is, in the world of college football 2023, he's an old timer and his techniques are not good. I do not want any more "retreads" coming back to Pitt after they went somewhere else and had little to no success.

Sounds exactly like the Wannstedt teams that we had here at Pitt -- I guess no surprise Hafley was part of Wannstedt's staff.

You have no idea the type of elite shape you have to be in to play professional soccer and the amount of running it requires. There is a reason you've never seen any pro player even coming close to being overweight. Absolutely all of them could complete a marathon without specifically training for it.

Right because as the Steelers and Mike Canada show, coaching actually matters and hiring a low level coach to lead a unit is a bad idea.

Stallings when hired was a once every other year, or once every three year tourney coach. And then after he was hired, well, that’s a different story.

Half marathon easy. No doubt.

I’m not a runner but I’d guess there’s a big difference between the 10 miles some of them run in a game and being able to run 26.

Let’s face it, most people here have no idea when it comes to anything that has to do with the game. They think goals scored equates to the amount of offense in a game.

You have to be in marathon shape to play. Pure and simple. My old out of shape ass can train for a month and go and complete a half marathon. These guys are in elite cardio shape. If you told them they had to complete a marathon without training, and I'm not saying it has to be super fast, all of them could do it. In a lot of ways, jogging for 4 hours is less grueling than the constant running combined with sprints those guys need to make in soccer. If you made Christian Pulisic run a marathon, he isnt going to collapse and fall over at mile 20. Trust me.

Wow, you are really stressing the Google machine looking for overweight players. First, the Brazilian Ronaldo, 10 years after he retired. Now, some English player who played in the lower leagues of English football. A pro? Technically, yes. But think Riverhounds level. Is that all Google can give you? Also, he plays striker where there is less running. He wouldn't be able to play midfield.
