Hamilton comments after GT loss

When recruiting character should be focused on as well as talent and actually understanding how to play the game. Character guys will continue to get better and better because they will work hard to improve their game.

I was told this team has heart and character because they make runs in the 2nd Half after they get blown out in the 1st. Its not easy to get blown out of the water and then make a run when the other team takes their foot off the gas.

Idk what to read about this. People get pissed when they lose, especially when they lose a lot. Doesn't necessarily mean there are toxic personalities inside the locker room.

The team has ramped down, long losing streak, bad losses, there's talent on the team, what's the problem if its not team chemistry.

The team appears to be dis-interested and not coachable.
They're closing out the season in a mechanical way not in a positive emotional way.

the guards don’t understand how to play the game if you watched their shot selection from day 1 that was obvious. Capel has them hustling on defense but offensively they are clueless and that is a reflection on how they weren’t taught proper fundamentals growing up.

We all pretty much can tell by watching the team that there are chemistry issues. JC has hinted to this as well. So not surprised by the comments from Hamilton.

Interesting comments. I don't read the PP-G so I wasn't aware that Hamilton was selected as the team spokesperson after last night's game. Does anyone know if any other players were interviewed and if they had the same things to say?

It wasn't just last night. He shared similar thoughts after NCST too.

As to your question about 'others', I keep posting similar thoughts. Where is the leadership on this team? Someone on the team needs to get angry, not necessarily via the media, but in practice, in a game. We've made so many mental mistakes as a team over this losing streak...how has not one player gotten into a teammates face? I've seen McGowens get animated and whine, mainly at AKC, but he didn't step up and use it as a teaching moment.

I've said this before this is exactly why they coaches or players shouldn't agree to interviews after losses.

Its almost always a bad idea.

BTW no one is saying Hamilton is a good player because he’s not as he’s limited and doesn’t have much skill at all. But he accepts his role and plays hard for the most part. I recall earlier in the year JC said Hamilton needs to rebound better. Hamilton went on to lead the team in rebounds per minute by a wide margin (a rebound per 3.7 min which is a real good number).

In addition Hamilton has made comments that he himself has to play a lot better. Similar to what JWF did last year. We need the more talented players on this team as well as coaches to accept responsibility as well.

I believe they are required by the ACC to do interviews...

I think the thing about a guy like Hamilton making these comments is that he's been around...and around winning programs, at that. I think a guy that was at Wichita State under Gregg Marshall for a couple years knows what it takes to win selflessly as a team.

Agree. A Gregg Marshall team is going to play hard and together as he won’t tolerate any me first bad attitude kids. Hamilton didn’t get much PT there because he’s just not a good player...as simple as that. But Marshall and the Coach from UNCG both had good things to say about Hamilton after he left. Maybe behind the scenes he was trying to mentor some of these guys and he got fed up with the selfish bad attitudes leading to his comments.

Reporter probably commented on Hamilton's effort after the six game losing streak and not playing much. Doubtful if he was talking about any teammates.

Leadership is going to get better — these young guys never had any real senior role models. JWF was a good guy, but he didn’t have much experience in the ACC either. I hope to see a more mature team as Capel’s first class becomes upperclassmen next season.

I guess there was no chance next years leaders who were this years problems wanted to start to show some leadership characteristics this season?
Leaders usually don't show up 8 months later after a summer off, leaders are usually leaders, and show up all the time.
I think Capel will pull this mess together but I doubt next years team leaders come out of this group except for maybe Champanie. He has potential maybe if the can get past the bad boys on the team!

I feel like people are making a lot of unfair conclusions about this team — we don’t really know what’s happening

But these upperclassmen need to have good basketball IQ's. They don't. We have some problems that won't be solved by being upperclassmen.

We watch the games.
That's what fans do.
Some fans spend a lot of money watching games.
Some don't.
After we watch multiple games, a lot of games, we as fans draw conclusions.
This is called our opinions.
As fans we're allowed to form and voice our opinions, that's what fans, sports casters, and beat writers do.

So who will tell us fans exactly What's Happening??? within PITT basketball??
Is there some local, state of federal agency that lets us know whats going on within PITT basketball?

I don't want to overly criticize, I just don't know that leadership can be developed in life. It's almost always intrinsic. Maybe you can learn through example, but to your point, who is bringing that example? Brown isn't that kind of guy. I feel like Murphy used to try, but his teammates don't seem to pay any attention to him. As he's played less and less effectively, I've noticed he doesn't seem as vocal or demonstrative out there.

He was definitely being critical of his teammates. I’m glad somebody had the balls to say something.

I’m really starting to hope Trae transfers.

Sometimes bad chemistry can infect a whole team. We saw it with the Artis/Young led teams. I'm willing to bet Capel has a plan to rectify such issues prior to next season.

Well lucky for you John Hugley is inbound, with hopefully Jeffress as well. Two of the finer humans Pitt has recruited in recent memory.

I'm glad he said it because we all know who wasn't taking instructions by the way they were playing so I like it. Sometimes you got to put people on blast and if those who think it's not for them they won't take it bad only the ones who know who he's talking about will take it in a bad way
Really this is interesting.
I could understand a coach having to make some comments but players?
Can of worms!

Maybe. But they have to have some leadership qualities already and more of a team first mindset then they do now. Players don't emotionally mature just cuz they get older. Many many examples of that.
