There are big differences in Painter's recent history at Purdue and Jamie's last 5 years at Pitt.

Painter went to a Sweet 16 last year. He's going in the tourney this year as a #1 seed after winning his conference and his conference tourney. He won his conference in 2018-19 and went to an Elite 8, following back to back Sweet 16 appearances.

Painter is 67-32 in conference play his last 5 years. Jamie was 45-45 in conference play his last 5 years at Pitt.

I think your buddy's expectations are out of whack.

Painter is an excellent coach. I hear plenty of MSU fans bitching about Izzo too. I have a buddy who was a lifelong UNC fan who was always bitching about Roy. He was convinced Roy was the only thing stopping UNC from winning the NC every year. Just goes to show you every fan base has this same element.

There was a lot more to bitch about with JD over his last few seasons than there ever has been about either Painter or Izzo. Still I wouldn’t have wanted JD gone, at least not without a very clear and strong Plan B already in place. Which was never gonna happen, so…..

Painter owes his career to Blue Chips. Blue Chips is a gateway to coaching in the NCAA Tournament. Just look at Penny and Bobby Hurley.

Big difference in a 2 or 3 year lull compared to a 5 year decline with a roster and recruiting that leave no hope for the future.
