I got to see him play in person with Cheeks and Barkley. It was an amazing chance to also meet all three on the court and get to shake their hands.

First off, Doctor J was my favorite athlete growing up. I mean, I never lived in Philly, never was a huge NBA fan, but he was just so awe inspiring with his athleticism and grace, I was just completely taken by him. Similarly with Lynn Swann.

But I know we have at least one poster who loves to claim how players from before can never compete with the athleticism of players today. And I just remember the Doc. Or a David Thompson, and I am sorry, there is no one today who is any more athletic than they were.

Dr J, David Thomson, Elgin Baylor, the Big O or Connie Hawkins or any of those guys could star in any era. Despite what some chowderheads think.

Pitt, led by Kirk Bruce, Keith Starr, Tommy Richards and Mel Bennett, was playing in the NIT Tournament in 1975. The entire tournament back then was played in New York City at Madison Square Garden. Only 32 teams were invited to compete in the NCAA Tounament in 1975. The NIT Tournament, with only 16 invitations, was still a big-time event with huge crowds and was covered as such by the media.

In the Panthers' first game on Saturday 3/15, Pitt beat Southern Illinois, led by future NBA stars center Joe C. Meriweather and guard Mike Glenn.

Pitt remained in NYC and the Panthers next game was scheduled for Wednesday, 3/19 against Providence.

As fate would have it on Monday, 3/17 the Indiana Pacers, with rookie and all-time Pitt great, Billy Knight, were visiting Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island to battle the New York Nets, led by Julius "Dr. J" Erving.

I had the great pleasure to attend that game in person. Dr. J had a double-double, 24 points, 14 rebounds as the Nets won, 124-116.

Pacers reserve, Billy Knight, had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists.

Fun times...
