I'm with Zeise...

This is my entire reason for thinking it’s ridiculous to fire Stallings after this year — right after he turned over his roster.

People think Pitt was a hard job to get coaches to take seriously last time? Go ahead and fire Stallings right after he turned over the whole roster. He’s too respected to screw over like that. No coach with any other options is going to walk into a situation where a coach who is wildly more successful than he is run out of town because he turned over a roster and lost while doing it.

Whether we like it or not, Stallings needs to be given a fair shot. He’s too accomplished and too respected not to be.

Agreed and like Zeise said, fan boys here have no idea, think they know basketball, etc, etc.. But they don't and they want him gone and will spew anger and hatred here until he is. They want him to fail. It's a shame.

Anybody who says Stallings can’t coach or recruit is an idiot dealing in emotion-driven hyperbole.

I’m not saying he’s the guy for the job, but I am saying that he has enough of a track record that he deserves significantly more respect than he’s getting.

Out of all the low-major, mid-major, and assistant coaches out there, Stallings will have been successful than 95% of them at the end of their careers. Easily.

What is the track record, exactly?

Missing the dance more than making it.
Peaking at a sweet 16 12 years ago?

Zeise is an idiot. He keeps yapping about how stallings has almost 500 wins, but over 25 years that isn’t terribly impressive. By the time Dixon gets to 25 years he will have 600 possibly, yet zeise keeps praising stallings and criticizing Dixon.

Just because he won games 10 years ago does not mean he's earned any respect at Pitt. The same people who claim Dixon was washed up refuse to admit that Stallings was even worse in the same period of time, and significantly worse since.

I agree, for all the reasons you stated.

But to the point about recruiting, there's where my worry lies.

He had huge opportunity to sell ACC playing time with his first class, and his results were OK at best.

He went the route of roster turnover, and his short term replacements are not players who are making a significant impact.

The recruiting class for next year has been underwhelming.

I agree completely with needing a fair shot. But he needs to start getting some higher end players soon, or his time here will not be a long one.

I mean, that’s a far better track record than anybody else we could get.

Tom Crean missed the dance more than he made it at freaking Indiana and people salivate when they think about firing Stallings and bringing him in.

Anybody who comes here is going to be significantly flawed.

Crean has a history of deep runs at two programs .
That’s the appeal.

He’s superior to Stallings in every way

He’s earned a chance, and it’s absolutely a horrible look for fans to be on the warpath against him.

I’m pro-Dixon and think people were stupid about him. I don’t think he was washed up and think he deserved immense support in an effort to turn things around, rather than being met with unrest.

I think Stallings deserves the same. Vanderbilt went to 7 NCAA Tournaments before Stallings got there. He doubled that in 17 years. He’s not a bum who produced mediocre results at a respectable program. He produced mediocre results at a lower-tier P5 program. That’s better than most of the other options Pitt could get.

Tom Crean made one Final Four and it’s because of Dwyane Wade, who he only got because he was a non-qualifier out of HS. He made it past the Round of 64 one other time during his 9 years at Marquette, and it was to the Round of 32.

Other than that, he made a few Sweet 16 runs at Indiana that were considered severely underwhelming given the expectations for his roster.

I think some of the "unrest" (to use your word) that there is with Stallings would be silenced with a couple of Top 50-100 type recruits.

For Stallings, I agree, it would help. I was talking about Dixon when I mentioned unrest, though. I thought he deserved support and a chance to turn things around — he needed to miss 2-3 NCAAs in a row before the heat turned up on him like it did in my opinion.

I edited my reply about "unrest" because my meaning was not clear the first time.

How has he earned it? He has only earned anything insofar as he was able to find a dolt to offer him a 6-year deal.

He’s earned it more than any other candidate we bring in will have earned it.

Some low major coach or some second tier mid-major coach certainly won’t have earned it.

Maybe that’s just how it’s going to be for the foreseeable future, where every coach isn’t good enough. Truth be told, that’s probably true if the comparison is Dixon.

But if Stallings can’t get a chance with the fan base I have no idea why any random lower level coach or assistant would assume they’d get one.

I’ll make it short and sweet.

With Stallings there is no hope of getting better.
That’s the unrest.
Someone with less of a track record-
With some recruiting chops-
Gives a reason for hope.

He proved that he was a mediocre coach in a worse conference. I do not call that earning anything. At least with an up-and-comer or a P5 asst, you have the hope to catch lightning in a bottle.

I'd take high risk high reward over Stallings any day.

The problem for me is that we let our best coach in history leave, shoving him out the door with a reduced buyout to expedite the process to hire a coach who has proven over a long period to be significantly worse.

If we hired a mid-major lottery ticket, a totally unproven guy, he may have totally sucked but at least they could have sold "hope." I could have lived off of hope for a few years. With Stallings, there isn't much hope. He's recruiting at Dixon's level, maybe worse and isnt close to being as good of a coach

Why would that give any hope? In addition to not having failed, that person will have also accomplished nothing, while carrying a tremendous amount of downside risk.

I’m not sure how you can’t see the difference between hiring a proven mediocre coach and an unknown.

I view the chance of a proven mediocre coach succeeding at the P5 level to be much higher than hiring a 2nd rate unknown.

I’d rather have at least a chance that you could get a coach that could make the program better....with stallings there is no hope of that.

Honestly, I would have preferred Andy Toole, Brandin Knight, or freaking tim McConnell from chartiers valley. They might fail spectacularly, but there was at least a chance they could be the next Dixon/howland.

Yeah that worked really well for the previous 60 or so years, surely it was just a matter of time for Pitt to finally knock one out of the park again.

Name another P5 coach with a losing conference record after 15+ years who went on to elevate his next program and I'll admit your premise has merit.

My point is more that I think it’s ridiculous to have hope when you’re scraping the barrel for a 2nd tier unproven coach.

I’m not even talking about elevating the program — that had no chance of happening.

Dana Altman?

That is the only thing we can hope for.

Stallings is a proven mediocre coach. Maybe he can recruit well enough to get us to a 10 seed and shoot our way to an Elite 8. That's about it

Frankly,
We are at downside right now.

You think We’d be worse off than present State????

I think there’s a better chance of Stallings getting Pitt back up to a level above BC and Wake and Clemson before he is fired than if we had hired somebody unknown.

I think the bottom would have fallen out after last year either way.

Why? They did it with howland...did it with Dixon. Barnes opened the door for Dixon to leave, then hired a clear downgrade with no upside.
