In football, we are a Mid-Major

Most programs are. I am sure the networks let alone the blue bloods don't like the fact that not just SMU, BYU and Boise are crashing their party, but Indiana. Indiana has been among the worst Power conference programs. Curt Cignetti is doing a great job right. Just signed an 8 year extension. What's going to happen?

Indiana next year, there 3 OOC opponents, you can put all 3 together and they wouldn't win 1 or 2 games in the Big 12. It's that bad. They do play at Iowa, Oregon and Penn State next year. So their conference schedule will be tougher. If Cignetti has another 9-10 win season over the next 2 years, someone is going to dial up alot of money for him.

One thing that will be interesting to watch is the SEC teams having to play in the cold. I read the other day that Kentucky's game in Texas is the furthest west they have ever played. I doubt that an SEC team has hardly ever played north of the Mason-Dixon line after October.

I remember when Miami came here a while ago in November, and were heavily favored. It was maybe 48F and they looked like they thought it was 20F. And, of course, they lost.
Realisticly....I am trying to think of the coldest geographic legit college football teams in the north who would host in the future. PITT, PSU, Michigan, tOSU, Utah, ND, and VT? I can't think of many legit northern college football teams who have cold weather venues and would host a playoff game.

You include Pitt in your scenario but not teams like Wisc and Mich St? Nebraska?

Heck, ive been in Oklahoma in mid December and while it may be a fluke, it was bone chilling cold.

It wasn’t uncommon for the Cotton Bowl, when it was played outdoors at Fair Park, to be a cold game.

I believe Joe Montana missed some of a Cotton Bowl one year due to hypothermia.

Pitt-SMU. Texas-UGA the next year was near freezing. The infamous celebration game between Miami-Texas was during a freeze I think.

you may remember a few years back the Bedlam game was played in weather conditions identical to last nights steelers game.

And though I did not attend, some buddies said the Pitt Oregon State Sun Bowl was not fun at all

There is always a rando 4th Big Ten team that is good each season. This year it's Indiana. In a given year, Wisconsin or Michigan St could host, though things would have to break just right. The University of Washington stadium would be a great place for a playoff game, though somehow it doesn't snow much at all in Seattle.

There’s always going to be a team in 4th place, but that doesn’t mean they are good. This week will tell a lot about Indiana.

Well whether or not they are good is a different issue. They could not be good and still get to host a playoff game, that how the B10/SEC invitational works.

I also remember Miami coming up here in 2013 in the snow - the dude next to me at the game saying this is probably the first time many of them have seen snow - and them subsequently kicking our asses. The 2003 game was pretty chilly, too, as I recall.

2003 it was freezing! That was the first time we heard "Cold weather will work against Miami". Problem was Miami heard this also, came out in pregame with no shirts on to prove a point, the went on to win something like 27-7, in a game that wasn't as close as the score made it sound.

This game was also famous for costing Larry Fitzgerald a vote from Ron Cook for the Heisman. Cook stood by this until his retirement, "Larry didn't come up big in the most important game of the season". Thanks alot Ron.

I know this thread hurt some peoples' feelings, but....

Proven again today. The CFP is the Big Ten/SEC Invitational. The ACC and Big 12 are one-bid mid majors.

The optimist says we still have a path, if we just win our league again. The realist says the gap will only widen from here and we will be on par with Tulane and Memphis pretty soon.
