Maybe or maybe not . MSU showed that an experienced group of guys can beat these teams with the young buck superstars . So Duke now gets the guys the next rung down from the one and dones and they stay for three or four years forming teams that might be really hard to beat ! Guess we’ll have to see how this all plays out .Once the NBA'a new rule kicks into effect and the one and done's are no longer available the college basketball world will get interesting as the blue blood program's recruiters will have to figure out which non-HS superstars are really better than others --but, not so much better that they will be two and done's. The recruiting goal will be to land recruits who are the best they can get but ones who will actually stay 3-4 years while being developed.
I was sort of surprised by the "lifetime"(ish) deal. Though they did not decline to a UCLA/Indiana level, his one national title is behind Duke, Nova, and UNC (and technically UConn but they're not heading in a good direction so I'll keep them out of it) during his tenure.
Of course the 2011-12 team shows if he has eight NBA players, he can indeed win a national title, and who else will recruit you that many? Will be interesting to see how he does post one-and-done. Probably an underrated motivator, good communicator, gets good defensive effort...but not a particularly strong offensive coach, and I wonder how his whole charm thing continues once he qualifies for social security.
Being built to do it and doing it are different things. If Final Fours are what fans demand or the coach is fired, shouldn't that apply to him too?Cal brings in players that are fun to watch. His teams are compete for conference titles and built to make deep runs in March almost every year. Who else delivers that?
