Jeff Capel! Huge Hire!

How good of a recruiter is he? Duke recruits for itself, so it’s tough to know for sure. He definitely didn’t recruit well after Blake Griffin left OU. I’m excited for the hire, but there’s definitely risk too.
Griffin was a 2007 class recruit.
2008 - 17th ranked recruiting class (including #11, & #88 in the country)
2009 - 13th ranked class (including #10, #32, #74, #108)
2010 - 40th ranked class (including #33)

Pretty sure most Pitt fans would be very happy with those classes.

I would be very open to giving Mike Rice a chance to rebuild his resume. Americans have given second chances to many people who have done a lot worse than Mike.

Capel was 96-69 in 5 seasons at Oklahoma.

17-36 after Blake Griffin left.

He also reached the Elite Eight then back to back losing seasons (Oklahoma's first since 1967) and was fired.

Why is everyone so excited? I see a guy who once he got all his recruits in at OU had two losing seasons, fired two seasons after reaching the Elite 8, and significant NCAA violations. And I don't recall his named mentioned for any other opening the past couple of years for any job.

OU has made the tournament 17 of the last 22 years. Two misses were under his complete control (5th and 6th year no more Sampson recruits) and the year following his firing. So three of their misses can be attributed to him as head coach.

OK. So he was the lead recruiter for Duke. So what do you think? He will have an easier, harder or about the same as time recruiting at Pitt than at Duke?

I also see nothing in his track record of building a program. Wade, Smart and Grant did more with VCU than Capel did.

So I can’t have any doubts? Are you serious right now?
Yes say you can have doubts but try not to cover your ass so you can come back if it doesn’t work as an “I told you so”.

I think we missed the boat, but hope he can at least recruit at a high enough level to make us competitive. He is certainly better than Stallings and monumentally better than Schmidt, but i don't think he is a good enough coach to really win. Recruiting will be interesting selling his own program again, but not Duke. It would be nice to see very experienced bench coach as AHC.

Well, I panic deleted my reply after basketball reference had Capel's birthday listed as 1953 instead of the correct 1975 and I thought I was wrong about his age. But since I was right, I/ll repost.

Capel was also 27 when he took over VCU, the youngest coach in Division I. He was 31 when he took over OU. He has spent the last 7 years crushing recruiting and learning under arguably the best coach in college basketball.

Edit: Let's just hope he has better luck retaining the Pitt players than he did when he couldn't hold on to the #4 class in the country when he took over OU.

Edit #2: which reminds me....we can officially blame Capel for the Scottie Reynolds buzzer beater...I like him a little less now.

I would rather Jamie had been retained and supported at Pitt; and for an additional $1.0 million Pitt could have bought other Top Assistants to help Jamie recruit.

If Capel is successful at Pitt, he will go to Duke when Coach K leaves.

AD Barnes.

So much damage in so short a time.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

That is a rather pathetic post. Being successful and moving to Duke in 4 years would be a great thing. That means we would be a Top 25 Program. Duke isn’t going to hire just anybody.

If I remember correctly one of his assistants without his knowledge allowed money to get to a recruit. He lost that class because everyone knew they were going to get hit with sanctions. Hence the two subpar seasons at the end before he was fired. He was cleared of all wrongdoing and went back to Duke. He's a great coach and an awesome recruiter. I strongly believe this is a great hire. But if they happen to strike out at least they did so swinging for the fences!

Read the Duke Board.

Many on their Board considered him the replacement for K.

If successful, he would get his HC training at Pitt (similar to Paul Chryst) before moving on to Duke.

Smell the roses.

Get lost - go to the TCU board. Your posts and signature are tiresome. Jamie is past history. Please move forward or get lost.

Well... it didn't take long for new posters to arrive spewing nonsense...

Congrats on being the first... Why don't you quit hiding behind multiple handles and get some balls and say what you think with your normal handle SMF...I mean whoever you are...

I've mentioned on here that I have some reservations about Capel, but I'm definitely behind this hire. Capel is an incredible recruiter and there's no reason to think he hasn't grown as a coach and a person since his first head coaching stint at OU. Most importantly, this isn't a panic hire or a 37th choice dumpster dive. This is a legitimately justifiable and exciting choice. I'm happy.

I was just listing pros and cons you clown. I don’t live to tell people “I told you so” on message boards. The fact that you even thought about it like that says a lot about you.

This is a solid hire. He was well respected at Duke and highly regarded as an excellent recruiter there, even with the program selling itself. I like that he comes from an ACC program and has coached under one of the best ever. You also hope that he learned from his previous experience as head coach and can bring that to Pitt. Capel is definitely someone who can be the face of Pitt basketball and someone to get behind to help rebuild this program.

JD had many years left on his 10 year contract. He decided to leave. It is what it is.

I hope Scott Barnes get hit by a bus.

Like that jripper guy? I haven’t seen his congrats yet.
Why would I congrats? I think the hire is ok, but is not anything close to a slam dunk. I didn't troll.

We could have hired Schmidt, Cluess, or a local YMCA coach and you would have proclaimed it a "HOMERUN!"

hopefully he has learned from whatever went wrong at OU his last two seasons. That was a long time ago and I am sure he is anxious for another chance. Probably won't see much next year but hopefully we will see positive results in 2019/20 season.

His OU time ended very badly but he was probably too young for that gig. He's probably much more polished with some humility after that experience and also with a huge drive to prove himself again.

I would assume that he's in the 2.5-3 million dollar range. I hope that frees up some big money for a high powered #1 assistant.

Personally, I think this is very good for Pitt BB. There are no sure things. Lyke did very well. She's already our bedt AD in 40 years.

It's all over the media now.
ok, I hit google and bing and cbssports and espn and tribreview with "brandin knight" typed in the search bar ... nuthin. gotta help me out with this "all over the media" thing....on second thought, nevermind as I'm guessing it is more unsubstantiated "I heard or the word is" drivel on social media...have not heard that since "word has it Schmidt is the guy" from two days ago...
