Jeff Capel on Jason Capel, UNC:

I don’t understand how this is a ton of disrespect towards Jason? Because the son of an assistant coach is wearing his number? Did he expect it to be retired beside MJ’s number?

I’m not trying to be an asshole here. I’m seriously trying to figure it out.. (ok the sarcastic last question was kind of assholehish)
Is it normal for Carolina to feature all of their players on a game day post? It could be but he only gets like a minute a game. I know people Who are on perpetual offend alert from certain people and they can convert anything that person does into an insult. I know in past seasons Pitt has featured a different player on physical season tickets but cannot remember if end of bench guys ever were featured on those tickets.

I do too but making the championship game and spoiling K’s last home game in Cameron will keep him from that
The arrogance of those 2 blue bloods thinking they can just hire any alum and keep rolling should get them a few leaner years (by their standards)

I was surprised to see they actually ran some good stuff last night especially trying to isolate Bacot then take advantage of what seemed to be coming. Pitt just had a better game plan for it.

All except for one that I found had a player on it. The one where they played Ohio state inexplicably had Hubie on it.

Interesting to note that the first Pitt UNC game in Pittsburgh had Puff in the picture. Now he wears #14, it was game 14, and it was in Pittsburgh. But I think that was more of a troll than featuring a walk-on son of an assistant coach.

Do we think whatever social media intern makes UNC’s graphics was even alive when he played or knows who Jason Capel is???

Both Capel brothers are driven, for their own reasons, by a white hot desire to defeat the University of North Carolina. Whatever they’ve gotta tell themselves on game day to channel that rage into beating that school, I’m cool with.

I’m cool with that too, but like the famous poet Lil Wayne once said “ real G’s move in silence like Lasagna”

If that was the tweet in question then capel needs to calm tf down and stop taking away from the big win and spotlight on the team. Surprised race didn’t come into play somehow since the Unc player is white.

Don't let Jason see the Pitt football twitter account and how it ribs WVU, he'll probably no longer want to be associated with the university.

But hey, while I don't think it was all that smart for Jason to put on a show outside of the locker room as opposed to inside of it, if he (and the team) can use this type of stuff as bulletin board material to help them focus and rise to the occasion, then good for Pitt. This basketball team probably does need to play with a chip on their shoulder and play the Rodney Dangerfield underdog role.

So this is the social post in question?

Anyone with competitive spirit is emotional and this isn’t the first incident based on Jeff Capel’s presser. F’ those wine and cheese snobs! He’s one of our own and these coaches and players have earned our support. H2P!
I had a buddy at the game and he was sitting near the Pitt bench. He said there were fans chirping all game at Jason.

I understand that. If you look at the tweet, you’d have to really look hard into that to think it was about Jason. Seems he think any boo in the crowd is towards him.

Bro all I’m saying is you’re 9-3, you punched your ticket to the dance basically. This is about those great kids in that locker room! Why make it about your career from 20 years ago!!!

I probably went too far in my comment but I don’t think he adds any value.

The tweet was absolutely directed at Jason.
Now, as Jeff said, he understands you try to be funny with social media but still, when you are promoting the game with the picture of a walk-on wearing Jason's number sticking his tongue out who had played in 1 game, its obviously a bit of a troll job toward Jason. It was disrespectful to a guy who had a nice career there and helped take them to a Final Four. Now should Jason have been THAT upset by it? No. But it absolutely was disrespectful.

Its because you dont promote the game using a walk-on who has played 1 game. Its not that he thinks his jersey should be retired. The post says like "we're coming for you" which is unnecessary. Its too personally targeted towards Jason.

So you think a social media intern who makes these graphics who is probably 23 thought hey, let me troll the assistant coach of Pitt who played at UNC when I was sucking on my mom’s chest by posting one of our players on the graphic (which they do every game) who is the son of one of the current assistant coaches?

As Cosmo Kramer says, A story like that’s GOTTA be true

YES!

Why use the walk-on who has played in 1 game? How many times have we used an Aiden Fisch graphic?

I’ve had nothing but good interactions with Jason and his family. It is bizarre that some of you always look for something negative even when things are going well.
Agree....nothing to see here. None of us are in the NC tradition of family or understand the NC tradition of family - we don't have that emotional connection so we're clearly not in a position to comment on his behavior or his emotional response to being dissed at his own dinner table.

Capel said that issue dates back to the 2009 Elite Eight. He was coaching Oklahoma and they were facing Carolina. Jason Capel showed up to support his brother wearing an Oklahoma shirt. Carolina fans there didn’t like it and gave him a hard time. Jeff Capel claimed that some UNC alumni had to intervene and quell the situation.

Because it’s the assistant coach’s son and he might’ve asked why he’s never in it?

this makes much more sense than that tweet that had nothing to do with Jason

He didn't think it was disrespectful that a walk-on is wearing his jersey. It was disrespectful because the post was meant to troll him. It was disrespectful because someone went to the extent to think "how can I troll Jason Capel, oh I know I will put up a graphic of a walk-on wearing his jersey sticking his tongue out." It was far too personal and too directed at Capel.

This guy has been UNC’s SID for basketball forever. He looked at the graphic and said, YES APPROVED. I’ve been waiting 20 years to get back at Jason Capel for averaging 12 PPG here and not getting in any trouble whatsoever. Finally I can get back at him!!!

That is such a reach, and for something you post to be THAT much of a reach is insane.

Well the bad blood between Jason and UNC started way before that tweet .
Let’s be fair

I agree, the Oklahoma thing is much more likely. I don’t think the tweet was a troll at all and if it was it was a pretty stupid troll.

But I don’t go through life thinking everything is about me and looking for things to be offended by. That would be exhausting.

Have you read posts from a few of our frequent resident posters?!?
Plenty live based on grievance exclusively

Me- I’ve finally let all that kind of crap go a few years back

Yes, this appears to be the largest of issues.

But, responding like a jilted 14 year old is only going to make it continue into eternity, sorry for Jason, but no way he ever gets the upper hand in this by responding as they want him too. He will never be bigger than UNC basketball, and students are going to be students.

Ok, so looking back on the UNC game day posts their entire squad has been featured on the different game days. So, yes the bench sitter was going to be on eventually.

Was it a troll?

i will leave you with this, the first game at Pitt featured Puff as the player. Puff had already been on for the game against Bama. So to say the social media guy is unaware of potential tie ins to a game is disingenuous.

but in the end it is a stupid subject.

He said it outside of the pitt lockerroom
Not at half court
This is a huge nothing burger

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'm not the greatest Jeff Capel fan. He needs to stay out of the political crap and quit voicing his opinions about political issues, misguided as they are. None of that helps his cause. He's better off staying away from the social media stuff and just try to coach a basketball team. This is, so far, one year out of 5 that he is doing at least a respectable job of doing the job he's getting paid to do. Time will tell if this is real or an anomaly.
If the opinions he voiced were similar to yours, would you still say he needs to stay out of the political crap? Maybe so, but you'd be highly unusual. I agree, it's better not to know someone's political views. But I wouldn't disparage someone who feels the need to do it.

Jason seems thin skinned, but I have no idea of everything that happened between him and people at NC. Maybe he's just overly sensitive. Terry Bradshaw had a hard time reconciling with the Steelers. Some people are just like that.

Agreed.
In this age of social media, there are so many people who feel so weak in their own accomplishments that they continually seek affirmation by others , often others refuse to accommodate their need for approval. To me it seems sad.

So you honestly think an SID approves all tweets? Do you think EJ Borghetti sits in his office all day and approves or disapproves tweets?

So you are on record saying that there use of the walk-on who has played in 1 game this season had 100% nothing to do with the fact he wears Capel's number?
So you honestly think an SID approves all tweets? Do you think EJ Borghetti sits in his office all day and approves or disapproves tweets?
What I’m saying is that the second assistant coach isn’t important enough to troll, HE IS A COACHES’ SON, and if that was out there and it was a troll EJ didn’t like he would damn sure take it down. Remember when we took down the WVU troll?

Do you really think some social media intern who wasn’t born when Jason Capel played (UNC released a statement saying as much the kid who made it had no idea who Jason Capel was) decided I need to troll the second assistant Coach today?

It’s MUCH more likely the kid or his father, the assistant coach at UNC, decided to badger the intern until this kid got a chance to be on the gameday graphic than anyone is thinking about trolling Jason Capel. I also don’t think Hubie would allow that. He’s an all time dude despite being a bad coach

And furthermore, WHY DOES IT MATTER HE WEADS CAPEL’s number!? He doesn’t have his number retired. He wasn’t on a national title team? He was on one of the worst teams in UNC history. It’s such an afront to have a walk-on wear his number? That’s absurd
