Jeff Capel on Jason Capel, UNC:

Do you really think they are going to come out and say we’ve been trolling him?

Who is making a big deal about it nationally?
It was one of the headlines on ESPN.com, I’ve seen several articles by national outlets, not about the game, but making fun of Jason Capel for making it about him.

I don’t think a social media intern who seems to be a girl by UNC’s wording knows the roster of UNC’s team from when she was 3 years old, no. And I don’t think their version of EJ if he’s a professional would troll a former player, no.

I think this is a guy looking for something to be mad about

Yes, I would. An athletic coach's political opinions are not anyone's business and he should keep it that way. He's paid to coach a basketball team, that's all. He creates more problems for himself getting into anything outside of sports, especially in the public eye. Politics has no place in college sports, either to the right or left. If he wants to voice his political opinions, do it privately.
I agree with that. But I feel that way about everybody, whether they are a basketball coach, an actor, or a cashier at the grocery store. And I don't really get too irritated with people that do it, I just wish they wouldn't.

If he’s looking to be mad about something and uses it to motivate himself or our players, then I’m all for it. Just win baby!

I totally agree.

You guys realize Jason is being dragged nationally for making it about him instead of the kids… which is what I said
You realize people do this all the time, and then deny there was anything intended? But congratulations to them, it worked. They got under Jason's skin, made him react like a fool (at least to anyone who pays attention to this stuff), and plausibly denied any intent.

Who gives a flying f?

Jason Capel wanted to beat UNC because he feels disrespected by them

Jeff probably wanted to beat them because he’s a Dookie

Burton wanted to beat them because none of the Carolina schools recruited him

Nelly plays with an edge against everybody because nobody thinks he’s an ACC player

Who gives a flying ****. This is a total nonstory. Jason probably is an idiot but he’s in the tunnel excited after a big win.

Who cares?

It all helped the Pitt Panthers win.

That’s all I care about.

And the day after a huge road win and sweep of UNC we have more posts on this subject. Great job Jason!

What do you expect them to say..."Yeah...we were trolling him!" And where is the - "Jason is being dragged nationally" narrative coming from?
The multiple national outlets that picked up the tweet from the Post gazette Pitt beat writer who filmed the child-like tantrum. It was one of the main stories on espn all day

So we have a coach who is diverting attention from the team for the great win against UNC while acting like a childish boor. This shouldn't have even had coverage, it's so irrelevant and insignificant.

That doesn't mean he's being dragged - today's media likes sensationalizing non stories...especially Disney. They cream all over themselves if a guy swears in a press conference.

What I’m saying is that the second assistant coach isn’t important enough to troll, HE IS A COACHES’ SON, and if that was out there and it was a troll EJ didn’t like he would damn sure take it down. Remember when we took down the WVU troll?

Do you really think some social media intern who wasn’t born when Jason Capel played (UNC released a statement saying as much the kid who made it had no idea who Jason Capel was) decided I need to troll the second assistant Coach today?

It’s MUCH more likely the kid or his father, the assistant coach at UNC, decided to badger the intern until this kid got a chance to be on the gameday graphic than anyone is thinking about trolling Jason Capel. I also don’t think Hubie would allow that. He’s an all time dude despite being a bad coach

And furthermore, WHY DOES IT MATTER HE WEADS CAPEL’s number!? He doesn’t have his number retired. He wasn’t on a national title team? He was on one of the worst teams in UNC history. It’s such an afront to have a walk-on wear his number? That’s absurd

The social media kid already trolled Pitt before choosing Puff for the 1st game. Is that a big deal? No. Its social media and that's kind of the fun part about it. Little jabs here and there. No biggie. How many walk-ons did they put on their gameday posts? They may have used walk-ons in other posts but for a gameday post, probably 0. And you think the social media kid doesn't know the Capels? They are NC Basketball Royalty (sort of). He knows he played at UNC. He probably didnt know what number he wore but he has google.

Do you not understand how social media works? This troll stuff, even coming from official team accounts is super common. Pitt trolls WVU all the time with the 13-9 stuff and the thing about "this team has never won a NC" a few days ago. This kid absolutely meant to troll Capel. Should he have reacted that way? No. But you believing the UNC press release or thinking the walk-on had been hounding the media kid to get on Twitter is absurd. I know you dont like Jason Capel but you have to realize that was tweeted for a reason

I don’t think the girl who made the graphic knows that the second chair at Pitt played for UNC when she was 3, no. And they have used multiple walk ins for graphics this year.

Clearly it was a coincidence. Even if it wasn’t, I don’t get the troll? It makes no sense. He’s slighted in what way?

I think anyone who believes a female social media intern made a graphic to troll a basketball player who played when she was 3 because he’s the second chair at Pitt by posting a picture of someone wearing his not retired jersey number should be committed to a psych facility

But the girl who does the graphics knew Puff is from Pgh?

I would imagine a social media intern who inputs the hometowns for the current team knows more about the team they currently cover than one from 21 years ago. You’re not this dumb cmon

You think they have the same girl doing graphics AND typing in Puff's hometown on the website. And how does she know Moon is a suburb of Pgh and not Philly? Did she google earth it?

You mean watch espn ?
Yeah I did
It wasn’t mentioned
It’s such a huge story it’s gone already
It was one of the main headlines on ESPN.com yesterday. SI. That conservative weirdo’s sports site. Barstool. Basically every national media outlet.

Correct, it’s gone today. So is our score, which was overshadowed by a temper tantrum nationally. Lame

I’m sure puff talks to the social media people…

Anything else professor? You’re way out of your depth here per usual

I looked back to early December and they have used 2 walk-ons. 1 for BC and 1 for Pitt and it just so happened it was a picture of someone wearing his old number sticking his tongue out. Just happened by chance I guess. The social media person had no idea who Jason Capel was.

You finally get it. The social media intern who was 3 when Jason Capel played didn’t troll someone by posting a walk on who has his number (I don’t understand the troll anyways) because he’s the second chair at a school who already defeated them.

To think that’s a troll is so far fetched it’s insane

Constantly aggrieved parties will be the death of civilization. Being offended that a walk on wears your number is one of the more insane things I’ve ever heard

Again, he isnt offended that a walk-on is wearing his jersey. Its that they made the game about HIM. He is a former good player there. Social media trolling is like an art. Its saying something without saying something like the great KSt troll job on Kansas yesterday (football schedule release, put up a video of Dumb and Dumber for KU). Maybe you dont understand social media. That post said "we're coming for you Jason Capel." Just like the Puff one said "you wanted him, we got him." The Puff one was ok. But they shouldn't have made the Pitt post about Jason Capel.

It’s Still a Top Headline on ESPN Basketball Page.

It’s comical that Jason thinks he’s Troll worthy for UNC. I guess when you have been a failure every step of the way since leaving UNC, any press is good press.

I remember the Oakland Zoo advising not to boo people like Brandin Knight or Mike Rice or Joe Lombardi who had been on Pitt staffs. Remember also that Coach K lit the F up to tell his students to stop booing Jeff once. I don't think it is too wild to think that a place that values tradition as much as UNC should be expected to give more effort in not offending their alums.

Even if you want to say that Jason is a psycho and inflated the whole thing, it seems like there were several minor things that day that got him worked up, and most or all of those might have been avoided if UNC cared enough.

It seems like you are arguing about 2 separate things.

1) Did Capel overreact? Yes, almost anyone would agree with you.

2) Were they trolling him? Possibly, but you insist there's no way and insult anyone who disagrees.

So what if the intern was 3 when Capel played? I could tell you a handful of stories about what a miserable SOB Ty Cobb was without having been born in 1920. I used to be a big baseball fan, and I assume she's a big NC hoops fan. She works for the sports department. He's a former Tar Heel player who's an assistant for upcoming conference opponent. His brother the head coach played for their bitter rival. There's been some animosity. I'd be surprised if she didn't know anything about it. She could have done what kids on social media do for kicks.

If it was trolling, it wasn't exactly a stiletto in his back. It wasn't even a jab with a sharp stick, more like a pin prick. Did he look like a fool blowing off steam like that after an emotional win? Yes, but I've grown accustomed to players acting like they conquered the world after making a first down while losing 42-10. And everything being a big story when we have a 24 hour sports network and hundreds of websites and bloggers desperate for content.
