Joe Uchebo

Yeah - seems to be having a really nice season. Those averages don't even include tonight. I saw he had 24 points and 21 rebounds against Marshall. He even had solid numbers against the P5 teams Charlotte played in the non-conf. He's averaging like 25 minutes/game as well.

Good for him! Seemed like an excellent kid. Probably would have been just as useful as ANO, if not more, but who could have seen this coming? He's putting up Greentree #s...

Surprising, but good for him. My knees hurt just watching him try to run down the floor.

Have seen him play a few times this year and he still sometimes struggles getting up and down the floor, but not quite as painful looking as before. Even though he is still impaired you can see more of the skill set that we all hoped he would be able to show while at Pitt.

You can't help but feel good for someone like him who has fought for so long to be able to display their ability and is finally able to do it. Good for him.

Dokish is being stupid. Not EVERYTHING is an indictment of Pitt. Did he even watch the games last year. Jamie ran Joe out there when he could. He could barely run and he looked terrible. He took a shot at bringing three new centers in this year. And before going crazy on Joe's stats, Maia led the Ivy in rebounding three straight years. Level of competition matters. I wish nothing but the best for Joe, but could we really sit around and hope a guy who could barely run would suddenly feel better? Would Joe be consistently be putting the same numbers up against ACC?

Maybe he tried the Willow Curve.

And the NCAA was going to approve a medical hardship waiver for this guy????

That was one of the dumbest ideas ever floated on these boards.

I wonder if he's better than Maia or ANO.

Averaging a double double.

8th in the country in rebounding 2nd in the country in rebounding per 40.

Not "everything" is but sometimes something is.
This isn't. Saying sometimes something is, is rather a silly statement, don't you think? Of course something is sometimes.

I am happy for big Joe but you can’t blame JD or the medical staff for giving up on him. I grimaced watching him try to run up the court.
There were like 2 guys on here who wanted to keep him, the rest didn't. You felt sorry for the guy last year because you could tell he was trying but he could barely run. We had to make a call. Take a chance on a guy suffering from a very bad leg condition or take a shot with a grad transfer. If we HAD kept him, the same guys bitching now would have bitched then about having kept a guy who couldn't play. They love having it both ways. All we have now is delayed bitching.

Im always saying silly shit aren't I? And yet you and your ilk are always waxing poetic?

It isn't the end of the world it's just something people noticed. The very thing we need is something we gave away. Dokish isn't being "stupid" and I'm not being "silly".

Hindsight is certainly 20-20. I'd probably rather have him than ANO right now, who has given us nothing, but if you asked me before the season started it would be the opposite. People were indicting Dixon for bringing him in the first place, and I didn't recall many people being sad he was leaving.

Maybe he just found a coach who can get max effort out of him?

Yeah, it's always nice to pass judgment after the fact. I'm sure you will suddenly be one of the guys who said last year we should have kept him. Dokish too. Carry on.

I wax poetic? I rarely write with o'ers and thee and thou. Maybe I should try. Add some class around here. :p

When people "indicted" Dixon what was your response? Let me try. "Well the guy has talent and can give us an inside presence we desperately need" "if healthy this guy can help!!!" So you were all for give uchebo a chance to get healthy and then perform then right?

The NCAA would have approved a medical hardship. Turns out he didn't need it.

I don't know if he would be better than Maia or ANO. It's a fair question.

I think I explicitly stated that "microfractures don't matter" and he would be a double double machine.

I've been happy with Maia for the most part. ANO has been a dud so far though.

One thing to remember...Charlotte is AWFUL this year. So, maybe Joe is healthier...which, in the game or two I caught a little bit of with Charlotte, he looked modestly more mobile...but, the team is awful, so someone has to get some points and some rebounds. Would he do that in the ACC? Again, he is big enough and skilled enough to get stats, but in the grand scheme of things, he probably doesn't make an ACC team better. Although, it would have been interesting to see if he could have added some more production at the 5 in little snippets...although, they certainly tried it last year and it didn't work too well.

Agree with what you're saying for the most part, but look at his stats against the P-5. You're right in that Charlotte is bad, but it's not like C-USA is a totally dreadful league. Could it be that he simply performs better with a longer leash? Some guys obviously struggle getting spot minutes.

Yeah he looked better and better against each and every cupcake we played but lately has looked as bad as Ano. Different level of competition. None of these grad transfers have wowed me.

He looked bad against NC State and not very good against Lousville, but has been fine against the other ACC teams.

Maia and Smith played well against GT and ND.

Uchebo played really well in pre-season and the summer league and it seemed we had a steal with him. then the real games started and he didn't do much. maybe he is a lot healthier this year, or maybe he is just on a bad team playing inferior competition. we will never know. it is a waste of energy to get bothered by it. good luck to Joe. he is a good guy and had a good attitude here last year. he gave everything he had.

Actually, as I said in a post on the pay board, his TRB%, last season was excellent. He rebounded at a high level even his first year here in very limited minutes. His problem was being healthy enough to get on the court. The TRB% is only slightly better this year. He is just playing a lot more minutes.

He will ALWAYS have pain and limited mobility. It's a matter of how much he can tolerate and is willing to play through. Competition levl is probably a factor too.

I went to the state store yesterday and my wife asked me to get some fireball. Never tried it until last night. Put that stuff in coffee on a cold night……mmmmm

Not sure if Uchebo could keep up with the athleticism on this team at this point. And he wouldn't have the mobity to defend.

Good for him, but I'm not sure he helps this group of players all that much. I think he'd make the defense even worse, if possible.

Who the heck is Dokish? Just because a guy uses Twitter, it doesn't make him more knowledgeable.

Big Joe couldn't practice and simply couldn't keep up with the pace of ACC competition last year. Watching him running ( limping ) up and the court he proved he had a lot of heart. The level of competition you play has a lot to do with your stats. If Pitt played Louisville every game nobody would confuse them with a good shooting team. Bottom line I'm glad he's getting a chance to finish his career on the court ,but despite what some here feel I'll take the opinion of the coaches and medical staff on his ability to be a meaningful player for Pitt this year.

Charlotte has played the 98th rated schedule and Pitt has played 75th.

Up to this point the level of competition hasn't been that different fwiw.
Agreed. We should all just be happy he is doing well and that his knee is holding up. He likely doesn't have a lot of games left in that knee. Hope he has a good backup plan career wise.

I'm of the minority opinion that once Pitt has recruited a guy, we should not push anyone out. If the staff is honest and a tell a guy he is never going to get real minutes, help him find a better place if that is what he wants. I'd have no problem if Joe was a bench warmer again this season.

Joe was an elite rebounder when on the floor for Pitt last year. His rebounding percentages on both ends were outstanding.

I always liked him for that, but never would have imagined he could play these minutes. He looked so bad last year trying to run.
